Chapter 8
Spencer stood in front of the policemen and women ready to give the profile, looking rather nervous.
His eyes were darting around and his hands were tightly wrung in front of him, he didn't know why but he had a bad feeling about this case. His eyes finally land on Nina who looks at him expectantly, giving him a quick thumbs up.
Clearing his throat he began to explain the reasons behind the profile to everyone, keeping his eyes locked on Nina.
Nina didn't hear a word that came out of his mouth, the only thing she could focus on was the fact that Spencer's eyes were so beautiful. She had noticed that they were hazel the first time they had met, but after working with him for about a month she had also noticed that in the morning they were always darker, and more brown than green whereas when he wore cool tones, like blues and purples ( a colour which Nina particularly liked on him.) his eyes became more green than brown.
Nina didn't have Spencer's eidetic memory but she took this moment to try to commit every detail of Spencers face to memory.
She didn't stop staring until the police officers around her started moving to leave.
Emily and Hotch were headed to some prison to interview the killer that this unsub was copying.
"Hey, are you okay?" Rossi puts his hand on her shoulder.
That shook Nina out of her daze, "honestly, I don't know, I just-I have a bad feeling about this case."
Rossi gives her a tight smile and grimly nods his head, "you know what kid? So do I."
...
Nina felt numb, she couldn't wrap her head around the horror she had just witnessed.
Hearing Haley Hotchner be killed by Foyet was horrible. She had held Penelope as she sobbed, her own tears falling silently. She watched the team break. Unshed tears in Spencer and Derek's eyes, the broken look on Rossi's face, JJ and Emily crying while holding each other. But they still picked up the broken pieces to help the person on their team who needed them the most, because they loved him.
To see Aaron Hotcher so torn was like a stab to the heart. This was a man who was stern and strong, who hardly showed weakness. Watching him leave that house, dried blood and tears on his face, his knuckles split open, still bleeding and clutching his son to him like if he didn't hold on he'd lose him forever, he almost did.
Nina supposes she could say that in this moment she hated Unit Chief Erin Strauss.
How. Dare.She.
Sitting in front of the insufferable woman while she questioned her. Trying to get her to say that Aaron Hotchner was reckless. That he'd let his emotions get the best of him.
However, if Nina was anything it was fiercely loyal. Especially to family and this team was her family now.
"So you didn't think that SSA Hotchner was out of line for the way he took down Foyet." Strauss looks at her dissatisfied.
Nina looked right back at her with a sharp glare.
" With all due respect ma'am, Aaron Hotchner has always been professional on every case that I've been with this team. That includes this one, the one where he almost lost his child, where he lost his wife. That man loves this team and would never put any of them in danger. If there is anyone to blame for the atrocities that just happened, it's the man who I can't wait to see rot in his prison cell until he's put down." Nina could hear her heart beat in her ears, but she held Eye contact with Strauss.
She wasn't the first to look away and that made her heart swell with pride.
Erin Strauss cleared her throat, "very well, please send in the next member of the team on your way out."
Nina walked out and smiled at Emily, who of course saw right through it.
"That rough,huh?" She asks Nina.
"Worse." Nina pulls a face, causing Emily to let out a nervous laugh.
Nina made her way to the bull pen and gave everyone a shaky smile.
Derek gives her a brotherly pat on the back, "I'm sure you did great, kid."
Before she could reply she heard a small voice ask
"What's your name?"
Looking down she sees Jack and she has to push down the tears threatening to spill.
"I'm Nina, you must be Jack." She kneels down to his height with a soft smile on her face, she'd always been good with kids.
Jack nods shyly, "Yeah."
"Tell me Jack, do you like hot chocolate? I can make you one if you want."
This made Jacks little face light up and he nods his head enthusiastically. "Uh huh, my mommy always puts Marshmallows in mine." Jack says
This cause the whole team to look at him sadly.
"Penny, hun?" Nina says, "do you have any Marshmallows in your lair?"
"I do!" She says quickly wiping a few stray tears, "I'll go get them right now."
The rest of the team all went in to get questioned, and Jack drank his hot chocolate while sitting in Nina's lap. Completely enthralled by the stories she told about how when she was little she dressed up as the hulk for Halloween and managed to get the most candy in the neighborhood.
Spencer watch this interaction and couldn't help but think that she'd be a great mom one day.
Nina didn't know if she'd be welcome at the funeral, Hayley had been in Witness Protection when Nina joined the team so she'd never known her. Rossi had convinced her that Hotch would want her there and Jack apparently really liked her.
So here she was, standing between Spencer and JJ, listening to Hotch make a speech about Hayley. The way he spoke about her made her swallow the lump that was forming in her throat. She sounded like a wonderful mother, the kind of mother that she'd had for the first 12 years of her life. The kind that would read you bedtime stories and bake you cupcakes for your schools bakesale. It hurt to think that someone like Hayley lost their life leaving behind people who loved her. Especially little Jack.
She didn't realize she was crying until she felt Spencer squeeze her hand gently, looking at her with a sad smile and his own tears running down his face. She felt guilty. Guilty that her mom was still alive and Jacks wasn't. Guilty that she hadn't done something during the case that could've made a difference, what? She didn't know, but she just wished things were different .
Sitting with the team at the reception was hard, they were all trying to wrap their heads around how such an awful thing could've happened. They were all worried about Hotch too, this man was their family and they could see he was hurting.
Their conversation was cut short by the beeping of Garcia's cell. They all knew what that meant.
A soft "no" escaped Nina's lips before she could stop it. She gave Spencer's had a gentle squeeze , he hadn't let go since the funeral and honestly she knew he needed this more than she did but still, she was grateful he was here.
"Surely they can send another team?" Derek asks in frustration.
JJ frowns and Emily and Penelope let out sad sighs.
"No, they can't, all the other units are busy." JJ says.
"Serial killers don't take days off." Garcia says in a sad tone.
"I'll go get Rossi." Derek says getting up.
Reluctantly Nina let's go of Spencer's hand, she immediately felt like she was missing a limb.
"I'll get a head start on getting our stuff and the hotel rooms." She says.
The sooner this case was over, the sooner they could take a few days off to mourn.
