Chapter 2
Walking into the police station with two big boxes in her arms.
"Excuse me, Officer. I'm with the FBI where can I put these?" Nina asks one of the police officers who rushes past her.
He gives her a dirty look
"Yeah, you can go to that room over there" he says before rushing off.
"Thanks" Nina says wearily, she rushes into the room to relieve her aching arms.
"Hey, can you help me with this map?" Spencer wobbles in on his crutches with a map under his arm.
"Oh yes of course, here" she takes the map from under his arm. "You want it on the board?"
"Yes, that would be great, thank you" Spencer sits down on the desk and lugged his his crutches.
Nina notices his frustrated sigh and watches him push his long hair out of his face.
"Those must be pretty inhibiting with a job like this." She glances down at his crutches. "What happened?" She asks
Spencer frowns and Nina realizes that she might've over stepped.
"Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, that was rude of me. My mom always said I was too curious for my own good. I really didn't mean to pry, sometimes I don't think before I speak." Nina rushes out, she doesn't want to upset someone on her first day.
"It's fine, I was shot." Spencer says looking down at his knee, a frown still etched on his features. " I can't go out in the field until it's totally healed, which is gonna take a while."
He sighs.
Nina wants to cheer him up.
"Well, at least you have me to keep you company, and if our first encounter has given me any indication, you and I will have a great time telling each other facts." Nina smiles brightly at him.
He smiles back and Nina feels relieved, like everything's okay because he's smiling at her.
"Anyway, I'm gonna put on some of this really shitty coffee and get going on those files that Hotch wanted me to get from this department"
Nina waves at him quickly and he waves back, already looking at the crime scene pictures on the desk.
..
Nina walks in with a cup of coffee for herself and one for Reid. Files of the states adoption records under her arm.
The team was investigating the murder and kidnapping of women who seemed to have given birth right before their murder.
Something was bothering her.
Spencer could tell as she hands him his coffee and the four packets of sugar he'd asked for.
"What's wrong?" He questioned.
Nina looks up in confusion, she wasn't expecting him to notice that she was upset.
"N-nothing, it's stupid anyway." She says. She doesn't want him to think she's unable to handle her job, especially since her job wasn't half as hard as what the team has to do.
"You know, statistically speaking more than 40% of women won't state when they are bothered by something in the workplace in fear of not being taken seriously." He states, still looking at her calculating her reactions.
She lets out a sigh. "I just-I don't feel like I should mention something so petty when you and the team are dealing with much more important things but I feel like the police officers here are being rather,umm-"
"Hostile?" Reid cuts in.
Nina nods, feeling stupid.
"That's normally what happens in towns like this. They feel as though the Bureau being here means that they can't do there jobs."
Spencer gives her a small smile.
"Oh"
"Yeah"
"Anyway here are the adoption files you asked for, all the babies dropped off at churches in the last 5 years." Nina says quickly, rather desperate to change the subject.
"Thanks" he takes them from her, his hands brushing hers once again. 'That's the second time today' Nina thinks.
She internally chides herself, she's acting like a school girl.
She clears her throat, "so, how come you know all these statistics and stuff?"
Reid looks up from his files that he's flipping through. Nina didn't know that he was actually reading that fast.
His cheeks flush a little bit.
"Well I have an eidetic memory so I remember everything I read." He says.
"Woah, so you know like, a lot of facts right?" Nina looks at him in wonder.
"Ummm, yes?" Spencer wasn't sure where this was going.
"Okay, Dr Reid, tell me something I don't know!" She looked at him all excited.
Spencer wasn't sure what he was expecting but he certainly wasn't expecting that. No ones ever asked him to talk about the facts and statistics he knows unless it was for a case. Otherwise people often get annoyed when he mentions those kinds of things.
"Really?"
"Yeah, really, what you got for me Doc?" Nina grinned at him.
"The scientific term for brain freeze is "sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia"." He states
She grins at him and he feels the tips of his ears burn.
"Oh,cool!"
Rossi pops his head into the room.
"Hey,Nina I need your help with the papers Garcia's sent through."
"Yeah,I'm on it." She looks back at Spencer
"See ya Doc!"
Spencer looks at the the spot she just left.
A smile makes his way across his face.
..
They had found their unsubs and brought them into custody.
She observes the team and can't help but smile, they all seemed relieved small smiles had made their way onto their faces. Except for Hotch but she had deduced that that was normal, he still seemed lighter than at the beginning of the case.
Her phone chimed in her purse, the voice of a Dalek saying 'exterminate' was her notification tone. What could she say she was a bit of a nerd.
Digging in her bag she pulled out her phone and stares at the message.
It was a photo from her brother, a picture of him in his hospital bed, her aunt by his side in her waitress uniform both smiling happily. Even with his Spider-Man beanie she could see his lack of hair due to chemo.
The message underneath read " Aunty Jean came to visit today, hope the new job is going well. Love you and Miss you." -Ethan
She felt a ready smile make its way onto her face. That was the reason she got this job, for him, to pay his all too expensive medical bills.
It made seeing those pictures of dead bodies for 3 days straight worth it.
Seeing his smiling face gave her hope.
