Laughter echoed around Spencer's apartment.
Nina and Spencer sat on his couch facing each other. Both feeling warm and happy as the rain hit Spencer's window.
"I can't believe you wore a ladybug backpack the whole of fourth grade." Spencer exclaims
His cheeks hurt from smiling so much, he hadn't felt this light in a long time.
"I know-I know, it sounds fake but I swear the entire year! I loved it so much." Nina says, " I'm pretty sure I would've worn it through the whole of fifth grade too if Jackson Randal hadn't stolen it from me and cut it up with craft scissors."
Spencer pulls a face, " Jackson Randal sounds like a douche."
"Ugh tell me about it!" Nina exclaims, "kids can be such jerks."
"Trust me. I know, I was a child prodigy in a Las Vegas public high school." Spencer says with a shrug.
Nina frowns at this, maybe it's because she didn't want to imagine anyone being mean to Spencer as a kid.
"They really didn't deserve you, Spen" she says, taking his hand in hers tracing patterns on his palm.
He gives her a soft smile, "Thanks." He gives her hand a soft squeeze.
The two of them let a few seconds pass as they look at each other. The moment was cut short by Nina stifling a yawn and failing.
Spencer was certain that her yawn was the cutest thing he'd ever seen, the way she scrunched up her nose and shook her head like she was trying to tell her fatigue to go away.
"You tired?" he asks her and Nina shakes her head, "no-no I'm fine really-" her sentence was cut off by another yawn.
'Traitor' she mentally yells at her brain.
Spencer chuckles at her "whatever you say." But he still pulled a fluffy blanket over her shoulders.
Nina's hands moved from his palms and started to trace patterns up his arm.
Spencer stiffened at the action, his scars from using Dilaudid were faint but if she were paying attention she would see them. He cursed himself for wearing a short-sleeved shirt to bed.
Unfortunately for Spencer when it came to him, Nina always payed extra close attention.
That and the fact that she'd seen similar marks on her mother when she was younger. Her fingertips stop at the small needle points that dotted his skin.
"Oh Spen," She says, her voice cracking, "why?" Looking up at him with unshed tears in her eyes.
Spencer didn't want to see her look at him with pity, so he kept his eyes locked on her hands, still secured on his upper arm.
He shakes his head, screwing his eyes shut.
"Please don't make me talk about it." His voice trembled, "I've been clean for three years but I still can't-" he gets cut off by Nina pulling him into her.
He was practically lying on top of her, he felt his tears stain her hoodie and her tears on the crook of his neck. They held each other for a little while, both finding comfort in being held.
"Three years is amazing Spencer." Nina breaks the silence, moving her face from his neck and facing him. Taking his face in her hands to make him look at her. To make him see that this didn't change how she saw him.
Spencer just shrugs, like him being sober wasn't a big deal.
"I'm serious, Spen." Nina narrows her eyes at him, "I mean, the longest my mother stayed sober was a week." She tells him, with a humorless laugh.
"Your mother?" He looks at her with sad eyes.
He could see that Nina was upset by her mother's substance abuse.
"Yeah, started using heroine when I was 13, hasn't stopped since." She says with a deep frown. "I always use to think that maybe if I pushed her to be sober more as a kid it wouldn't have happened, she would have stopped and been the mother that I needed- we needed" Nina says thinking about her siblings.
Spencer wanted to say something that would make her feel better, or even take the sadness she was feeling away entirely, but he knew that wasn't possible so he had to settle for "it's not your fault, you were just a kid." He puts his hand on top of hers.
"It took me a long time to realize that. I think she never even wanted to try." Nina wipes away a stray tear. She hadn't spoken about her mother in a while, the subject was pretty much taboo at home.
Resting her head on Spencer's shoulder she felt her eyes get heavy, her sleepiness wasn't helped by the nice feeling of Spencer playing with her hair.
"I'm glad you came here tonight." Spencer admits, he wouldn't say it out loud but he often hated coming home to an empty apartment. He was lonely, all his friends worked with him and had their own families to go home to.
He replays the words she had said to him as she'd stood in his doorway.
'I just didn't know who else to talk to and I was thinking of you'
Even though Nina had her own family at home she had thought of him, she had wanted to talk to him enough to show up at his place in the middle of the night.
Years of being bullied and neglected had made Spencer rather insecure, he always thought that people had better things to do than to care about him, sometimes he wasn't even sure his friends liked him all that much.
But Nina cares about him enough to worry about him. That thought made Spencer smile a little. He had often felt needed by his team he would often swoop in with facts and observations to the case that helped drastically but with Nina he felt wanted, that was a feeling that Spencer Reid rarely felt.
Lost in his own thoughts Spencer hadn't noticed that Nina had drifted off to sleep until she had snuggled further into his arms, a soft content sigh leaving her lips.
Spencer didn't want to wake her so he stayed like this, his hand in her hair and her body practically draped over his. Looking over at the clock, it was 2am. Spencer hardly slept through the night, his nightmare from tonight proved that and often once he was awake he didn't go back to sleep.
However, with Nina's body weight on him and the sense of comfort that came from being in her presence he felt his eyelids get heavy. In his half asleep daze he traced Nina's face lovingly and moved her slightly so that she was fully lying down on top of him now and wouldn't have a stiff neck in the morning.
He drifted off into a dreamless sleep for the first time in a long time.
...
Nina groans and nuzzles deeper into her pillow, someone's stupid phone is ringing.
Spencer reaches over to the coffee table and grabbed the phone. Still very much asleep he answered the phone.
"Hello?" He rubbed his eyes.
"Um? Is Nina there?" The voice on the other end replied.
This caused Nina to quickly snap out of her almost asleep state and quickly sit up.
"Yeah." Spencer looks up at Nina, hair a complete mess, eyes darting around in a panic and a little bit of dried drool on the left side of her face.
Maybe it was because she was practically sat on his lap but she looked angelic to Spencer.
"Well, this is her Aunt ,could I speak with her please." Hearing this through the phone speaker caused Nina to fully wake up. Looking down at Spencer she very quickly realised the position they had assumed.
She felt the heat crawl up her neck to her cheeks. Shit shit shit.
Scrambling off Spencer's lap she took the phone from him.
"Hi Jean." Nina squeaked, running her hands through her hair.
Spencer watched her pace, slowly waking up.
Mutter quick "yes", "no" and "sorry"
"NO WE DIDN'T HAVE SEX! JEAN!" Nina practically yelled at the phone. Her face looked like a tomato she was sure.
Letting out a frustrated sigh Nina pinches the bridge of her nose. Aunt Jean often didn't understand the concept of boundaries.
Spencer raised eyebrows at her, letting out a low chuckle. The scene was comical to say the least.
"Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can." Nina tells her Aunt before hanging up the phone. Letting out a breath, she turns to Spencer with a sheepish look on her face.
"I'm sorry about that." She gestures to the phone, "and about falling asleep here last night. I really didn't mean to intrude."
Spencer untangled himself from the blanket and got off the couch.
"You didn't intrude,Nina." He tells her, voice still husky from sleep, "I didn't mind at all ."
He gives her a warm smile.
Nina smiles back, "Well, I'd still like to make it up to you." She says causing Spencer to furrow his brows at her.
"I do have to make breakfast for the kids, they usually wake up around 9am." Nina tells him, it was now 8am Spencer notices looking at the clock.
This made him feel heavy for some reason, he didn't want Nina to leave. The thought surprised him.
"-and I was wondering if you would want to have breakfast at mine?"
Pulled out of his mind by Nina's question we wasn't allowed to overthink it. Realizing what she'd asked a smile made it's way onto his face.
"I'd like that, but first I need to brush my teeth and get changed. I wouldn't mind some coffee first, I'm sure you do too." He tells her, heading to his room.
Nina giggle as she notices the hair on the back of his head stick out in all different directions, he looked like a cartoon that had been electrified.
"I can do coffee, after all it's my job and if I can make coffee from a shitty midwestern precinct drinkable, imagine what I can do with actual coffee!"She says heading to his small kitchen.
She hears Spencer laugh at this.
A smile slips onto her face.
But it slips off just as quickly when she remembers what she'd realized last night.
She really did like Spencer but she wasn't willing to lose this friendship with him by admitting her feelings and making things awkward.
Pouring an ungodly amount of sugar in Spencer's mug, she shakes her head at herself.
There's no way Spencer would have feelings for her, so she'll just pretend she doesn't feel like her heart is about to jump out of her chest everytime he looks at her. She can do that right?
