Chapter Three
Gif is of Marie Smith :) AKA 'Mum'.
Okay, I know it was stupid, now. I probably shouldn't have walked into the forest alone, in a new town, without a phone. I realised that as soon as I'd walked far enough to lose my sense of direction.
Looking up, all I could see was patches of a bright blue through the trees. It must have been at least five-thirty now, how was it still so bright? Was it that confusing daylight savings thing?
I looked back down to where all I could see were countless trees. I spun in a full circle. I sighed and started walking again; I wouldn't get anywhere by standing still.
I probably hadn't gone further than ten more metres when I heard a choked sob. I froze. Was it my imagination?
I stayed completely still, not even breathing. I was ready to say I imagined it before I heard it again. I squinted and spun in another circle. My eyes caught on something and I had to do a double-take. It was a navy blue blazer, like the one I was currently wearing, hanging from a branch on a tree. I hurried to it and looked all around calling a soft, "Liv?"
Another caught sob and then, "V-Vi?"
"Where are you?" I asked, looking around wildly.
"Get up here, quick!" she shrieked.
I jumped at the intensity of her voice and looked up. She was sitting on a thick branch a few metres up from the ground, frantic.
I didn't dare to say 'no' in her fragile state. Placing my hands on her blazer, I pulled myself up.
Liv had probably placed her blazer there so she wouldn't get splinters. I wriggled the rest of my way up onto the branch she was sitting on. I scanned my eyes over her blotchy face, "Are you okay?"
She shook her head slowly, "Not at all..."
"What's wrong? Why did you come out kilometres into the forest?"
"The road's only about a hundred metres that way," she muttered, pointing behind her.
I sighed, "Of course it is... Anyway - explain."
"I don't know," she whispered, broken.
My breath caught and I repeated, "You don't know?"
She shook her head slowly, "I just... I wanted to see the forest."
"You weren't planning on jumping off the top of the tree, right?" I gulped.
Liv's eyes flashed to mine and she furrowed her eyebrows, "You seriously think I'm depressed en-"
She was cut off by a howl. A loud, piercing wolf howl. Our eyes froze on each other and we slowly looked down to where a grey wolf was sitting, looking up at us.
"I-I didn't know they had wolves in A-Australia," I squeaked.
Liv whimpered, "I didn't know wolves were that big."
"They aren't."
Wolves are not that big. That wolf had to be twice the size of a normal wolf.
"C-can wolv-v-ves climb trees?" Liv whispered.
I shook my head, "No. At least... not in the books I've read."
"Is it... waiting for us?" Liv squeaked.
I shrugged, "How am I supposed to know?"
"Do wolves kill people?"
"Yes."
"Are wolves smart?"
"Yes."
"Are wolves fast?"
"Liv! Stop asking questions," I gripped the branch beneath me.
There was silence as we stared down at the wolf in fear.
She whispered, "Do wolves eyes normally glow like that?"
I stared into the wolf's faintly glowing orange eyes and shook my head, "No."
Together, we said, "What the hell?"
"Do you have your phone?" I asked Liv, "We could call the..."
"I'm pretty sure they don't have animal control in Crestview," Liv filled in.
"Then who do people call?"
"The police?" she suggested, "They could... put it down?"
I nodded frantically, "Call them then!"
She unzipped her skirt pocket and pulled out her phone. She unlocked it and huffed, "Seriously? No service? We're only a little while into the forest!"
The wolf let out another loud howl and we both jumped, barely managing to remember to hold onto the branch. However, that just made Liv drop her phone. It crashed to the ground at the wolf's feet and it leant forward to sniff it before letting out yet another loud howl.
Liv asked, "Are wolves always this loud?"
"I don't know?" I shrugged helplessly.
"Well, we're stuck here," Liv frowned, "What are we gonna do, huh?"
I sighed loudly, "Don't ask me."
The wolf suddenly stood and jumped up, grabbing her blazer between its teeth. It tore it to pieces before spitting it out and sitting on the remains.
Liv whimpered, "There goes my blazer..."
A loud, impossibly loud, howl came from deeper within the forest, causing the wolf below us to stand up quickly.
"There's two," we said in dread.
The wolf below us howled back, seemingly much quieter compared to the other one. But it was still the same loudness as before. A brunette wolf came running into sight. It was much larger than your average wolf and bigger than the grey one. Yet, it was still thin. Tall and muscular but thin somehow. Like lean muscle rather than bulging.
I was somewhat entranced by it's beauty before Liv whispered, "It's huge. We're not getting out of here. We're gonna die up here."
"No, we aren't," I scoffed, "They'll... send a search party or something. They do that, right?"
The brunette wolf let out a deafening howl, causing me to block my hands over my ears. When I took them off, they were still ringing. I regained balance on the branch and stared at the wolf. This wolf had faintly glowing red eyes rather than orange. It barked quickly at the grey wolf and the grey wolf dared to omit a faint growl. The brunette wolf seemed to shake his head before looking up. It almost looked taken aback by the sight of us. Within a moment, the wolf changed to a confident stance and loud out a short, quiet howl.
I wasn't entranced, anymore. I was scared.
Liv whispered, "I repeat... we're not getting out of here alive."
"Agreed..."

I wasn't sure how long we waited up here but by the time anything drastic changed it was already nightfall and I was only seeing what was below me by the light of the half-moon.
The two wolves were sitting on the ground, watching our every moment. Occasionally, the grey wolf would bark or let out a soft growl but the brunette wolf would respond with a nip or a bite or a howl, even.
The grey wolf was currently half-asleep, his head tucked in on top of his paws. He looked peaceful, even.
The brunette, however, was on high alert. A few minutes ago, he'd begun circling around in the small open area beneath the tree, agitated, almost.
The drastic thing that happened was when both wolves sprung to a defensive stance, looking in the direction of the road. They both had their ears pricked up and intense gazes in their bright, glowing eyes.
I glanced over my shoulder with Liv, "Do you see anything?"
Liv squinted, "Barely. I got my glasses, though..."
She pulled her small-framed glasses out of her pocket and placed them on her face.
"Do you see anything?" I asked.
She squinted through her lenses and then through the trees, "I can just see a car on the kerb."
"They don't like cars?"
Liv sighed, "How should I know?"
I looked back down to where the wolves were now pacing. I heard a car door slam in the distance and after a few moments, the wolves seemed to almost calm down and sit again. The grey one went back to almost sleeping.
Liv frowned, "Someone's coming."
"Wouldn't the wolves go to... I don't know... attack?" I chewed my bottom lip.
Liv shrugged infinitesimally, looking down at the wolves, "The brunette one is staring at you."
I looked down to the brunette wolf, where he, indeed, was staring at me. I stopped biting my lip and examined the wolf. The wolf looked away and to the person who was coming. He let out a low growl that seemed to reverberate throughout the area we were in.
The person coming sighed loudly and said, "Come on, don't growl at me. I came to get you."
What? I exchanged a glance with Liv. This guy was talking to the brunette wolf.
The wolf let out another, fiercer growl.
The person, hidden on the other side of the large tree, ordered, "Come on, dude. Your parents are gonna worry. And, Aaron, Mum's freaking out. Let's go."
Aaron? What. The. Fudge?
Why aren't the wolves attacking this guy? And why is the guy talking like he knows the wolves... and their parents?
The grey wolf stood up slowly and whimpered to the brunette wolf before trotting to meet the other guy. The guy emerged into the clearing and I held in a gasp. Jeremy Asher?
Now, I was even more confused. I held my breath as the brunette wolf let out a quick bark and the grey wolf shook his head.
The brunette wolf looked slowly up to Liv and me, still stuck in the tree, and then seemed to let out a sigh. Jeremy's eyes followed the wolf's and then landed on us. His jaw went slack and his eyebrows raised, "Oh, I totally wasn't just speaking to two wolves. I was speaking to the voices in my mind. Yes... I know how crazy that sounds-"
But my attention wasn't on him anymore, it was on the grey wolf that seemed to be changing. I cocked my head at it. A small flicker of it's tail. A twitch in it's ears. Rolls in his shoulders that seemed too large for a wolf. The wolf's muscles spasmed and suddenly, I wasn't looking at a wolf.
Liv let out a loud scream, "Aaron?!"
My sister grasped for my hand and we held on to each other while trying to not fall off the branch.
I gasped and whimpered, "W-werewolf."
One very ashamed and naked Aaron was sitting on the ground by his older brother, red in the face.
The brunette wolf let out a loud growl, pointedly to Aaron and then started barking. My guess was that the brunette wolf was a werewolf too.
I turned to Liv, "This is crazy. I'm not hallucinating, right?"
She shook her head quickly, "We need to get out of here!"
But before either of us could make a move, the brunette wolf began changing too. A small flicker of it's tail. A twitch in it's ears. Rolls in his shoulders that seemed too large for a wolf. And then, in the wolf's place, was sitting one very angry and naked Ezra.
I let out a loud scream and covered my eyes, "What the fuck just happened?!"
Liv was already moving, "Come on, Vi!"
I didn't waste another second but hopped off the branch, tumbling to the ground. Liv led the way out of the woods in a run, barely remembering to grab her bag.
I shouted, "Since when do werewolves exist?"
Liv squeaked, "Since when is my new best friend a werewolf?"
We froze and looked to each other in panic before running again to the house.
We rushed in, gasping for air, but looked up at the surprising silence. We expected Mum to be yelling, I guess.
But instead she was on the couch, tears rolling down her face, whilst a policewoman attempted to calm her down. The policewoman's eyes landed on us and she asked, "Are you both Olivia and Violet Smith?"
I nodded slowly, events from the last few minutes still running high on my list of priorities.
The policewoman gave us a sad smile, "We were about to send out a search party. Thankfully, you two made it back alive."
"Wh-what time is it?" Olivia asked the woman.
"Just after ten."
"Ten p.m.?" I said in dumbstruck.
Those two werewolves... oh my god... werewolves. They're werewolves.
Crappity crap, crap, crap.
The woman nodded her head at us, "Please don't get trapped in the woods again."
It wasn't until after the woman left that I realised...
We'd never told her we were in the woods.
