I'm an adult!!
"So will you do it? Will you graduate with me?"
Jessica smiles and Danny wipes her cheeks.
"Are you sure you can't do it without me?" She chuckles.
"I know I can't, baby."
"Well then I guess we're graduating!"
"Alright!" Danny shouts and hugs her.
"Shh! Danny, the babies are sleeping!"
"Oops! Sorry!" He whispers.
***
"Dammit Jessica! Why do you dress them in the same clothes?! I can't tell which ones which!"
Jessica laughs and walks over to Danny.
"Look.
It's all in the eyes, babe. And the cry! Emilia has this soft cry, and her little lips are pouty. Elaina has a loud screaming cry, she's always moving around, and again look at her eyes. It's all in the eyes!"
"How do you know this?"
"I'm their mother." Jessica chuckles.
"Am I a bad dad because it's hard for me to tell them apart?"
"Of course not! It's hard because they really do look exactly alike."
"Everything just seems like it comes so naturally to you while I'm over here like an idiot trying to figure things out!"
"I'm still trying to figure all this out too. It's not easy, babe." Jessica rubs his back.
Emilia starts fussing so Jessica and Danny look down to them.
"What's wrong with you? What are you so upset about? Hm?" She stops fussing and just stares at Jessica.
"She's mesmerized." Danny says making Jessica laugh.
Emilia looks at Jessica with wide eyes before she hits her hand on her sister.
"Hey no hitting!" Jessica says in a baby voice.
"What is that about?" She moves her hand away.
Elaina starts crying and she reaches over and sticks her nails in her cheek.
"No ma'am!" Jessica gasps.
"Oh my gosh, they're like fighting!" Danny says.
"I know! We don't do that, girls! That is not nice!"
"Just because you're a whole week old now, you guys want to be all tough, huh?"
"Right? Silly girls!" Jessica tickles them.
"I can't believe my babies are one week old already! This time seven days ago you two were in the middle of trying to kill mama!" Jessica smiles.
Elaina makes a cute noise, making her parents giggle.
"Yeah we're talking about you! You and your sissy wouldn't come out!"
"You two were being stubborn, we're you?" Danny smiles.
"Danny, they're so cute! I can't believe he have them!"
"I know.. I can't believe how much I love these little people. I knew I would of course, but I just never knew love could feel like this. Even with you.. Watching you give birth made my love for you change."
"In a good way I hope." Jessica giggles.
"In the best possible way." He smiles and places his hand on her shoulder.
***
Jessica's birthday.
"Hey girls, let mama sleep! It's her birthday!" Danny smiles down at the twins.
They scream louder and he says, "Well listening isn't your strong suit I see."
Jessica hears them and gets out of bed.
"Good morning my pretty princesses!"
"You woke mommy!"
Jessica giggles and picks up one of the girls.
"Happy Birthday, beautiful." Danny smiles and gives her a kiss.
"Thank you!"
One baby was still screaming in the crib so Danny looks down and says, "Alright already!" Then picks her up.
Jessica laughs and says, "Awe! Be nice, Daniel!"
"I'm nice, aren't I, Emi? Hm? Is daddy nice?" He kisses her cheek but she cries louder.
"Awe, your stumble hurts her little face!" Jessica says softly caressing the back of her finger on her cheek.
"I'm sorry, Princess!"
Jessica chuckles and looks at Emilia.
"Are you hungry, precious? Mama will feed you, just calm your pretty little voice!"
**
"Happy Birthday, little mama!" Jane hugs Jessica as soon as she comes downstairs.
"Thank you!" She giggles.
"Happy Birthday, baby girl! I made you some breakfast and got your favorite donuts!"
"Awe thanks mom!" Jessica hugs her mother.
"I'm an adult now!" She smiles.
"Awe! Yes you are!" Dorothy taps her nose with her finger.
"Haha! I think you were an adult when the second line popped up!" George jokes.
"George!"
"Leave your sister alone!"
"Thanks daddy!" Jessica smiles and hugs her father.
"I can't believe my baby girl is eighteen years old! Seems like just yesterday you were running around with a diaper on! Now you're running around changing diapers!" He chuckles.
"Heh.. Yeah.."
"I remember when Jessica was four years old she counted the days until she was an adult. She thought that being five was just the greatest thing ever!" Ann laughs.
"I remember that! Janie I gonna be a real big person and I gonna be a movie star on the tv, and I gonna be a boss!" Jane says in a baby voice.
Jessica chuckles and rolls her eyes.
"I asked her what she was gonna be the boss of and she said, I gonna be the boss of all the peoples! That little girl had goals!" She chuckles.
"Yep! Heh.. Where did that little girl go?" Jessica looks down.
"So Jess, what do you want to do for your birthday?" George changes the subject a bit.
"Oh George, my birthday this year will consist of breast feeding, burping and changing diapers!" She chuckles.
"Quite different from last year, huh?" Danny chuckles as he bounces Elaina in his arms.
"Definitely!"
"What did you guys do?"
"Well Danny and I went over to this party without mom and dad knowing-"
"No wonder you got pregnant!"
"We didn't even do anything!! We both knew our parents would kill us if they knew where we were, so we went to the cabin and just sat in Danny's truck and talked for hours... We stayed the night together and just really got to know each other.. It was nice." Jessica looks down and sighs.
Elaina starts fussing so Jessica looks over.
"Do you have her binky?" She asks Danny.
"No. I couldn't find it."
Jessica rolls her eyes and hands Emilia to Jane.
"Will you please hold her while I go get her binky?"
"Sure! Come to auntie Jane, sweet pea!"
"Jessica, I'll go look for it, you just eat!"
"It's okay, mom. It'll just take me a second!"
Jessica goes under upstairs and Emilia starts crying.
"Awe she misses mommy!" Ann pouts.
Albert see's Danny begin to feel overwhelmed, so he takes Elaina and tries to calm her down.
"Here, let me try.
Come to grandpa, pretty girl!"
"Thank you, sir!"
"Jane, you want me to take her?"
"That's okay! From what I heard during the night, you really didn't rest. Just sit down and eat some breakfast."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, go ahead. I've got her."
"Thank you! She'll be okay once Jessica's back. She's gotten really attached to her."
"That's so sweet!"
Danny sits down to eat and Jessica comes back down.
"Really Daniel? You're eating while your daughters are throwing a fit?!"
"Jess, we told him to eat! We're just trying to help." Jane says.
"Oh.. Well thanks. Here's her binky, daddy. I'll take Emi.
Thanks, Jane." She says taking the baby from her.
Jessica sits down to eat while holding the baby.
"You look so exhausted." Ann says.
"I am.. I still don't feel that great from their birth, plus the girls were up All Night Long!!"
"Poor thing! I'm sorry that you feel so yucky on your birthday."
"It's okay.. Their little faces make me happy."
"And my little face." Danny smiles.
Jessica rolls her eyes and chuckles.
"Of course!"
Danny smiles and Jessica says, "You know what I'd really like for my birthday?"
"What Babydoll?"
"A nice long shower."
"That's it?" He laughs.
"Daniel, a nice long shower is a hard thing to get when you're a new mom." Ann says.
"That's true. Well if that's what you want, then that's what you shall have, Princess!"
"Thanks, babe." She smiles.
**
"How was your shower?"
"Amazing! How were the girls?"
"Terrible."
"Awe! *Giggles* Well they don't look terrible!" Jessica looks into the crib they were both sleeping in.
"Yeah, they passed out about five minutes before you got out."
"Oh. Well you did good, especially since everyone's at work, school or grocery shopping. You did good by yourself, babe!" She smiles and high fives him.
"Thanks." Danny chuckles.
**
Later that day.
"You okay, Jess?"
"Yeah, I just feel really sore.."
"Your stitches?"
"Yeah.."
"I'm sorry, sweetie. Is there anything I can get you?"
"No, I'm okay. Thanks..."
"You seem so down today. It's your birthday, babe!"
Jessica looks down and shrugs her shoulders.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing.."
"Jessica. You're my wife.. I can tell when something's bothering you."
"I'm eighteen." She looks up with a sad face.
"Yeah."
*Sighs* "When I was younger I thought that being eighteen was the beginning of all these brand new adventures, which it is! It's just different now.
I wanted to go to college... My parents wanted me to go to college. I can't help but feel I disappointed them. They love the girls and you, but I'm eighteen years old and I'm married with two kids! My parents had such high hopes for me. I don't regret my girls at all Danny, you know that I love them more than anything.. I just..."
"I know.. I understand."
Jessica looks at him and her eyes fill with tears.
"It's hard having babies."
"I know."
"Thinking how completely different everything is just from last year.. I mean, we're married and have twins! I would have never thought this would be our lives."
"Me either! It's nuts!"
"When my sisters turned eighteen they went out with their friends and partied to celebrate the beginning of adulthood.. They didn't have a care in the world. I have three other people I worry about every single day!
... Oh gosh, I hate that I even feel like this!" Jessica puts her hands over her eyes.
She sighs and looks at Danny.
"I get to spend my birthday with you; My new husband and my new babies.. I should be happy... I am happy! I'm just really stressed out right now with the twins, and the pain from my stitches, and from nursing the girls, plus school! Then I have a diet I have to start on before graduation! Everything is just piling up and it's scaring me!"
Jessica starts crying so Danny walks over and holds her in his arms.
"Shh, shh, shh.. It's okay. Don't cry."
"I'm sorry.. Today has just been a rough day."
"I know...
Jessica, I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. You can still go to school, you can do whatever you want. Anything is possible, baby girl! Don't ever forget that. Your parents are So proud of you. You've done great in school, you made two of the most gorgeous babies in the world, and are an amazing mommy. Plus you married a terrific man." He kisses the top of her head and Jessica softly chuckles.
"Your parents had high hopes for you because you are and always have been so amazing! Don't ever think you disappointed them because they are so so proud of you.
And the diet thing. Baby.. Please, Please Please don't think you have to go on some diet crazy diet. Your body is perfect, I cannot stress that enough!"
"I'll just feel more comfortable if I lose a few pounds."
"Alright well we're gonna do it together in a very healthy and safe way, okay?"
"Okay.
Do you think I'm a horrible person?"
"Of course I don't!"
"I'm not upset because I have them, and it's not that I'd rather be out partying, because I've never been that type.. I guess it's just that I don't even have that option to go out with friends.
I'm sorry for being a big cry baby and literally whining about twenty different things at once, but these two girls are extremely tiring and it's making my mind go crazy!"
"Don't apologize, I'm your husband. I'm here to listen to you, and never judge you. I'm here to comfort you and to help you as much as I possibly can."
"Thank you."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
They stay there hugging each other in silence for a couple minutes.
"Thank you for talking to me, Danny."
"No problem, baby!"
"You know what? Now that they're fed and are napping, I'm gonna try to get a little rest before my mom calls us for dinner."
"Oh yeah, go ahead! I'll be downstairs. Shout if you need anything, okay?"
"Alright."
Danny rubs her back and kisses her lips gently.
As they break apart a soft smile appears on Jessica's face.
He goes to the kitchen and Dorothy was still cooking dinner.
"Hey Mrs. Dee.."
"Hey Daniel. What's wrong?"
"It's Jessica.. She's upset."
"Why?"
"She's talking about how you and her father had such high hopes for her, and she feels like she disappointed you guys. She said that there was stuff she wanted to do before having the babies.. and before getting married I assume. She said she wanted to go to college and I told her she still could! I would support her one hundred percent in whatever she wants to do. It'll be hard, but we have help and we'll find a way.
Then she feels bad for feeling certain ways. She said she doesn't regret having the girls, it's just hard. Jessica is a wonderful mother, and it's obvious how in love she is with those two just by the way she looks at them. All this stress is getting to her, and I feel terrible. No one said this was going to be so hard!"
"Well Danny, marriage is always hard, and having kids is even harder. Add in the fact that you're both teenagers, and it makes it even harder! Jessica is a new mom and stress comes with the territory. I hate that she feels that she disappointed Al and I because we've never been more proud of her."
"I know! I told her that!
She just seemed so overwhelmed and upset.. All I can do is be there to listen to her, and let her know that I'm always there to support her.."
"Well thank you, Daniel. I'm glad to hear how supportive you are of her. You're a very good young man."
"Thank you! I'm just worried about her, Mrs. Dee. I mean, I talked to her and she seemed a little better.. I just hate that she's feeling down. I want to make her happy, and I don't want her to ever have any worries at all. I wish there were more I could do."
"What you're doing is perfect. It's a tough adjustment for both of you, but everything will be just fine.
What is she doing now?"
"Resting a bit while the girls are napping. Mrs. Dee, do you mind if after dinner and cake I take Jessie someone for just an hour or so?"
"I don't mind, but she might not want to leave the babies."
"Oh that's right!"
"There's no harm in asking. At least she knows you care and you want to do something special. Albert and I will be more than happy to watch the girls."
"Thank you so much!"
**
"Enchiladas! My favorite, thanks mom!"
"You're welcome sweetie!"
"Hey, we had this the night Ann and Jessie announced they were pregnant!" George chuckles.
"Oh that's right! Well I was trying to hide it from Ann, but you blurted it out!" She playfully shoves him.
"Hey!" Hey laughs and shoves her back.
**
"What's wrong my little cupcakes? Did you not like mommy getting all the attention? Hm? Did everyone singing scare you?" Jessica says in a soothing voice.
"Stop your crying, pretty girls!" She smiles.
The babies immediately stop and just look at Jessica with wide eyes.
"Look at that! Such good listeners already!" Dorothy says in an excited tone.
"They're not always like that, are you cutie pies?" Jessica chuckles.
Dorothy laughs and hands her some cake.
"Thank you!"
"Hey Jess!" Danny shouts.
Jessica looks up and he snaps a picture of her.
"Daniel! *Laughs* What are you doing?!"
"Look at how beautiful you are."
He shows Jessica the picture and she rolls her eyes.
"Delete that! I look stupid!"
"Don't say that! You look gorgeous!"
"I look like I'm about to stab you with my fork."
"It's cute! I'm putting it on Instagram."
"Don't!"
"Oh I just did!" Danny smiles.
"Daniel!" She whines and playfully hits him with her fist.
**
"WAAAAHHHH!!" Both girls cry.
"Oh no! What's the matter now?! Huh? What crawled up your little diapey's?" Jessica says in a cute voice.
"Danny, they're hungry, will you help me please?"
"Sure."
Jessica feeds the twins and they quickly fall asleep.
"Look at them! Milk drunk." She chuckles.
Danny smiles then moves some stray pieces of hair behind her ear.
"Jessie, how about we leave the girls with your parents and I take you out of the house for a little while?"
"Oh Danny, I don't know. I can't leave them."
"Your mom said her and your dad would watch them. Please Jessica! Just for a little while?"
"Where are we going? Is it far?"
"No, it's not that far."
"I don't know." Jessica looks down at the girls.
"If you don't want to go, then don't worry about.. But I really wanna go! And you can even stay in what you're wearing, it's not anywhere extravagant." Danny chuckles.
"I can stay in my fancy birthday pj's?" She giggles.
"Yeah! They're cute, leave them on."
"Alright.. Well I guess it'd be okay to leave for a little while.. They seem to be in a deep sleep.."
"Yeah, they won't even have time to miss us!"
"But I'll miss them!" Jessica pouts.
"Me too, but we'll be up with them all night long anyway." He chuckles.
"That's true." Jessica laughs.
"Alright, well let's go while they're still asleep."
"Yay! I'll go get your parents!"
**
"Call us if you need anything! We won't be long." Jessica says not taking her eyes off the twins.
"We will. You two just go and enjoy yourselves and be safe!"
"We will, Mrs. Dee!" Danny smiles.
"Jessica." Dorothy pulls her aside.
"Yeah?"
"I don't know where you two are going, but you just had the twins and your stitches are no where near being healed-"
"Woah mom, I don't think that's what Danny has in mind!" Jessica laughs.
"Well I didn't think you'd even want to think of that right now, I just wanted to tell you. If he tries anything, do not do it, Jessica! You could hurt yourself."
"Mom, I know. Danny wouldn't force himself on me."
"Jessica, did you forget that you told me how these two little babies were conceived?"
*Rolls eyes* "This is different! He saw what the girls did to me and I think he's scared to even try anything." She chuckles.
"Well good! You kids have a great time!" Dorothy chuckles.
"Thanks. Bye bye my babies! Mommy will be back before you even wake up! Muah! Love you!!"
***
"This feels really strange."
"What does?" Danny chuckles.
"Being out just the two of us and me not being pregnant."
"Yeah, it's just like old Danny and Jess now!"
"Yeah! Well kinda.. I'm a little heavier and my boobs are like fifty times bigger!"
"They look really great, babe." Danny reaches over and grabs her boob.
"Ouch! Daniel, they're sore!" Jessica smacks his arm.
"I'm sorry!"
"Where are you taking me?"
"Do you still have pregnancy brain, woman?" Danny chuckles.
"What?" Jessica looks out the window and smiles.
"Oh! We're going to the cabin aren't we?"
"Where else?" Danny looks over and smirks.
"Oh my gosh I'm gonna cry!"
"Why babe?"
"I don't know!"
"Awe!" Danny chuckles and places his hand on her thigh.
When they drive up to the cabin, they both lay their seats back and Danny turns the radio on.
Jessica puts her feet up on the dashboard and Danny reaches over for her hand.
"I love this place." Jessica says with tears slowly falling down her cheeks.
"Me too. This is where we fell in love."
"I know..
It's crazy how emotional a place can make you! I've been so weepy lately and I hate it!"
Danny chuckles and leans over to kiss her.
He slowly pulls away and Jessica climbs over to sit with him.
She cuddles into him and cries.
"Sweetie, why are you crying?" Danny holds her in his arms and rubs her back.
"I don't know!" She whines.
"Just hold me, please."
Danny does what she asks and says, "I love you, Jessica."
"I love you too, Danny." She speaks softly.
Jessica eventually calms down, and fully relaxes her body on Danny's.
Danny gently ran his hand up and down her back.
It was so peaceful. There was a light breeze coming through the open window. Birds chirped and the radio played softly.
When their song started playing Jessica looked up and smiled at Danny.
"Hey, this song sounds familiar." He chuckles while placing some hair behind her ear.
"Dance with me!" Jessica giggles.
"Of course!"
Danny turns the music up, and as they sway back and forth Jessica lays her cheek on his chest.
"We danced together to this song for the first time last year on your birthday. It was the night we first said I love you."
"Awe.. I love that you remember."
"Of course I remember! I said that I thought I was falling in love with your and you smiled and said, Dance with me!"
Danny and Jessica both laugh.
"Then our song started playing and.. I knew.. I was definitely one hundred percent in love with you.
It was a feeling I had never experienced before... There was something that happened that night, and it was really great.
It was when I saw my entire future with you. It might have all happened quicker and very different than we both might have thought, but I still wouldn't change it for the world. This is the life God planned out for us.. It might be crazy, but it's a life we created together and I love it."
"Danny." Jessica's voice shakes.
"I just couldn't help falling in love with you, Mr. Huston."
"I couldn't help falling in love with you either, Mrs. Huston." Danny taps her nose with his finger making her giggle.
He kisses her lips and she lays back on his chest.
"Happy Birthday, my beautiful wife."
"Thank you so much, Daniel."
As they sway together slowly, Danny softly sings, "Wise men say
Only fools rush in,
But I can't help falling in love with you"
A soft smile appears on Jessica's lips as she rests her eyes closed and let's herself enjoy this little time she and Danny have alone.
