PART 9

Kira, Scott, and I quickly walked into the school and ran into the classroom.

There we saw Mr. and Mrs. Yukimura. Mr. Yukimura had been attacked by Stiles.

"Kira, did you bring it?" Mrs. Yukimura asked.

"You going to tell me what it is?" She asked handing her a bottle.

"Reishi." She answered opening the bottle.

"You're not seriously giving dad magic mushrooms?" Kira raised an eyebrow.

Mrs. Yukimura gave the reishi to Mr. Yukimura. He started coughing and spat something black into a napkin.

"Are you okay?" She asked helping him up and he nodded.

"Stiles did this?" Scott asked.

"He wanted the last kaiken. I've kept this near me since your friend disappeared." Mrs. Yukimura replied with a blade in her hand.

"Mom, you need to talk to us, about everything." Kira spoke.

Scott took a photo out of his pocket and handed it to her.

"Where did you get this?" She asked

"Is it Grandma?" Kira asked looking at the photo.

"No. It's me." Mrs. Yukimura answered.

That didn't make any sense. The photo was from 1943. Oh, my God.

"If that's you, you'd have to be about 90." I spoke.

"Closer to 900." She corrected.

"Okay, sure. Why not? Dad, how old are you?" Kira asked nervously.

"43. But I've been told I look mid-30s." He answered smiling.

Kira sighed and handed the katana to her mother. She opened it and pieces of the blade fell from it.

"The blade was shattered the last time it was used." Mrs. Yukimura spoke.

"When was that?" Kira asked.

"1943. Against a nogitsune."

"All this had already happened before?" I asked.

"Yes." She answered.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Mr. Yukimura spoke.

"Where did that come from?" Kira asked.

"It was an interment camp during World War II. In Oak Creek. Not too far from here." Mrs. Yukimura replied.

"Hold on. You told Allison and Isaac there was no interment camp at Oak Creek." Scott spoke.

"Allison's family has a certain history of violence. I didn't know if she could be trusted. There was a camp, yes. But all the records were erased." Mr. Yukimura replied.

"They covered it up."

"When I was a grad student, my passion project, actually more like an obsession, was trying to dig up the truth on Oak Creek. That's how I met your mother, Kira." Mr. Yukimura smiled.

He put several photos on the desk and Kira took one. A burned man full of bandages.

"So, where did the nogitsune come from?" Kira asked her mother.

"Isn't it obvious yet? It came from me." She answered and our eyes widened.

[...]

Mrs. Yukimura arranged the katana pieces on the table.

"Kira, I need your help on this. There isn't much time. And this is something that needs to be done in the daylight."

"Not until you tell us everything." Kira crossed her arms.

"Tell them, Noshiko. Tell them what they need to know." Mr. Yukimura told her.

"Wolves and foxes tend not to get along. Not just in fables and stories. I don't know about phoenixes." She spoke.

"But allies, however unlikely, should be welcomed. Especially in times of war."

[...]

"Okay, stop. Just stop." Kira interrupted her mother's narration. "We don't want to hear your Casablanca story. We wanna know how to save Stiles."

"I'm trying to tell you." Noshiko answered.

"You're tryin to stall." Scott realized.

Oh, now I understand why she was telling us her love story with a WWII soldier.

"When the sun goes down, the oni go after Stiles, right? Although your love story with a World Ward II soldier is quite interesting..." I started saying but Scott interrupted me.

"Lia..."

"Your friend's gone, Scott." Mr. Yukimura spoke.

"I don't think you know that for sure. You brought the oni. Can you call them off?" He asked looking at Noshiko.

"It's not his fault." Kira told her mother.

"Call them off." I told her.

"Stiles may be your best friend. He might be more to some of you" She looked at me. "But he is nogitsune now. He is void."

"Can you call them off?" I asked again.

"When you hear the rest of the story, you won't want me to." Noshiko replied.

[...]

"Rhys and I found ways to see each other. Sometimes at the barracks. Sometimes in the bunkers where they parked military vehicles. He was being transferred to North Africa in a few weeks. I was teaching him some French." She narrated.

Awwww, how cute. I didn't know that Mrs. Yukimura had a love story. It probably ends in tragedy but still... awww.

"We watched Merrick and Hayes talking with the camp doctor. They were whispering, talking quickly."

"Noshiko." Mr. Yukimura interrupted her.

She held the blade tightly and now her hand was bleeding.

"Mom, what are you doing?" Kira spoke worried.

Noshiko took her hand of the blade and Mr. Yukimura gave her a napkin so she could clean the blood. She smiled at him cleaning the wound and when she showed us her hand it was gone.

She healed.

"How did you do that?" Kira asked.

"It's one of our talents. Something you'll learn, Kira. You should've noticed by now that you never get sick. Ever."

Kira looked at us.

Noshiko was a kitsune.

"You'll never experience something as simple as a common cold. Something as bad as the flu. Or something like...pneumonia." She spoke with pain in her voice.

[...]

"Rhys checked his log. But we already knew what was happening. Dr. Liston was using Merrick and Hayes to sell medicine on the black market."

"What did he do?" I asked looking at her.

"I told the others and they weren't happy. I had realized the mistake I had made by speaking too soon. I wasn't helping anyone. I was inciting a riot. I yelled for them to stop. But so many people were sick. And so many were dying."

We all looked down.

"I'd never seen anger like that. It was a living, brewing thing. Now I knew why Satomi was always trying to keep quiet. Why she got migraines once a month, and why she was always at the game of Go. It kept her calm." She explained.

"She was bitten." Scott realized.

"Bitten werewolves have a harder time suppressing their anger. One unexpected flare-up and they could lose all control. The gunfire nearly killed me. I don't know how many bullets made their way into my body, but I fought everyone one of them. It left my body so weak, my heartbeat so slow it appeared as though I was dead."

Kira and Noshiko were quickly arranging the pieces of the katana.

"But even then, I was still better off than Rhys. His screams could be heard throughout Eichen House, echoing through every room, every hallway. He died in agony. The doctor, it seems, had also sold the morphine."

That was probably the cruelest thing I've ever heard.

"Merrick and Hayes were given the task of getting rid of all the bodies, both American and Japanese-American. They were transferring Dr. Liston out as well, stationing him somewhere else. They were covering it up."

They way she narrated it. I could feel her anger. All her anger and resentment.

"The doctor, Merrick, Hayes, and all of the others. They were gonna get away with murder. By chance, I guess, Rhys's body had been put next to mine."

I sighed. I saw Kira look at her mother with sad eyes.

"I wanted the soldiers and the administration of the camp to be punished for their crime. But I knew the clock was ticking. I was going to lose my chance. They were going to burn me with the others. I couldn't fight back with my body weakened and still healing. I could barely move. I was going to die. With time slipping through my fingers, I knew I was making a terrible decision. But I could not die knowing they would get away. So I called out to our ancestors for kitsune-tsuki. Possession by a fox spirit."

"A nogitsune." I spoke and she nodded.

"One that feeds of chaos, strife and pain, to take control of my weakened body, imbue it with power and use it as a weapon. But calling on a trickster spirit is a dangerous thing. They can have a very dark sense of humor. Because while the nogitsune did come to possess someone, it wasn't me."

Rhys.

"What happened?" Scott asked.

"My body was beginning to heal. And I managed to pull myself up from the ground. But it was too late."

"What did it do?" Scott asked.

"It brought chaos, strife and more pain than you can imagine. I had to find him. I had to stop him."

They quickly arranged the pieces of the sword. Noshiko looked out the window worried.

"Kira, hurry up. Night is coming. The literal translation is "a bolt of lightning." In French, it can also mean "love at first sight." Noshiko explained.

Kira and Scott looked at each other and I smiled.

"But a bolt of lightning happens to be exactly what we need right now." Noshiko spoke.

"For what?" Kira asked.

"Excising the nogitsune from Rhys's body shattered the katana. But you can but it back together." She answered and Kira looked at her.

"Why don't you just do it yourself?" Kira asked.

"Because I'm not a thunder kitsune." Noshiko answered. "Do you trust me?"

"I just found out you're 900 years old. I don't think I'm ever gonna trust you again." Kira replied.

"Trust me on this." Noshiko spoke.

She grabbed Kira's hand and placed it on the katana. Kira looked at us and we smiled a little encouraging her.

Lightning began to come out that Kira's hand and the katana began to come together.

Scott and I looked at each other surprised. The sword finally came together and Kira smiled.

Noshiko took the katana and held it out to Kira.

"Go ahead. It's yours now."

"What if I don't want it?" Kira asked.

"You need it." Noshiko replied.

She threw the sword at Kira and she caught it.

"You see? It gives you balance. My power is yours now, Kira. If the oni can't stop Stiles, you have to. The same as I did. And maybe seek out a wolf to help you. And a little extra help from a phoenix wouldn't be bad." She spoke looking at me with a smile.

"You didn't tell us anything." Scott spoke.

"You want to save Stiles? Kill him. That's the only way."

"We'll find another way. We'll save Stiles and defeat the nogitsune." I spoke.

Scott's phone rang and he took it out immediately.

"We'll save him, Noshiko." I spoke and she smiled.

We started to leave the classroom.

"Kira."

Noshiko held out the sword sheath. Kira took it putting the sword in it.

We continued walking quickly out of the school

The message Scott had received was from Allison.

They were in Derek's loft and Stiles was probably there.
