Isaac Lahey.

Gorgeous in every sense of the word. Sexy. Hot. Alluring. Attractive. Other synonyms.

Not many girls outwardly payed attention to Isaac for most of his life. Everyone had the thought pass their mind that he was attractive, but he seemed introverted and distant and he was in a world of teenagers in high school where no one had enough patience to give real love to a broken boy who needed it.

Y/n was not one of those girls, though.

Isaac and Y/n were best friends when they were young. Closer than gravel and dirt in the middle of a desert. Told each other everything. Went everywhere with each other. They didn't leave the house without the other, unless they were going to meet up somewhere. She'd sneak into his house when he had nightmares or his dad got bad. She knew because she was across the street from said Lahey boy. She could hear the close chaos. He would help her with her homework and take her out on silly friendship dates when they were nine and her parents left her home alone.

His dad was abusive.

Her dad was neglectful and her mom was too busy to notice - or care.

They were two peas in a pod.

And then eight grade happened. Towards the end of the year, right before school ended.

Isaac had denied that he liked her forever, dedicated to keeping her in his life as his friend. He was too young to actively, maturely think about a relationship and she didn't want something flimsy, awkward, or stupid. She didn't want to date at all right now. They were thirteen. So it was a mutual crush that neither of them ever acted on.

That changed when Y/n met Spencer Miles, a kid that wouldn't even be in Beacon Hills anymore once high school came around. The two talked, and fed off each other's energy. Where Y/n was a Magnifier, taking people's emotions and reflecting them, but amplified, Isaac was a Muter, softening very bold emotions in blunt ways. They cancelled each tiger out, and could usually act fairly normal. Unless Y/n was especially depressed or Isaac was especially giddy. Then her depression caught on t him and they both wallowed; or his energy infected her and they were both hyper.

Spencer, on the other hand, was an Amplifier, like Y/n.

The two would get talking and she'd make a joke. Spencer would instinctively flirt, without trying to or having any purpose or real meaning behind it, and she would laugh and flirt back and the two would get so flirty so quickly that over people around them would get uncomfortable.

It was all meaningless and in jest, but it made Isaac feel like a third wheel and uncomfortable. He reacted in an immature, senseless way and all together stopped talking to Y/n. When she confronted him finally, he snapped at her. "Go talk to your boyfriend! I don't want to deal with you anymore. You drive me crazy Y/n."

The boyfriend stab had confused her. Her boyfriend? But "deal with" her? That hurt, that hurt a lot. It's what her mother said to her anytime Y/n ever talked to her about anything, ever. Isaac KNEW that. That's why he'd said it. If only she knew that he'd meant something not so negative when he'd said she drive him crazy.

She did. She drove him to an attachment he couldn't bear losing. She drove him to lengths that scared him. She drove him up the wall with her annoying "troll" jokes. She drove him around the bend with her smell and her walk, her speech and her smile, her wide range of vocabulary and her love of books. She drove him completely mad when she started to hang out and flirt with Spencer. With that boy he hated.

He tried to apologize later but she threw things at him. Yeah.

Her logic?

If he was going to use her weaknesses against her in an argument, she would use his against him to make him go away. She hated him. Now? Now he hated her too.

And so best friends, closer than air and oxygen, became mortal enemies.

Or at least so it seemed.

When Y/n met Stiles in high school, leading her to meet Scott, things got a lot better for her. She became a light, happy Y/n again. Isaac would watch her longingly from a distance, yearning for her. Yearning for their late night/early morning talks, their cuddles, their food fights. Everything. He envied Scott and Stiles for having what he used to. What he wanted to have again.

Then he got bitten.

And then he joined Scott's pack.

And then Allison and Isaac happened.

Every turn was a but  from Isaac to Y/n, or a jab from Y/n to Isaac. Their arguments and insults could get so heated, so nasty, that Y/n would go home and have a panic attack, and when Isaac lay down at night, he would cry himself to sleep. Everyone in the pack was completely, totally, undeniably sure that Isaac and Y/n hated each other in the oat raw, complete ways.

So that's what left everyone at the battle of the Nogistune. Y/n was back to back wth Malia, the two fighting with all they had.

And then they heard it. All of them. Even Y/n, with her human ears, heard Lydia's banshee scream.

"ALLISON!"

It sent a chill down Y/n's spine and as she looked over to see Allison, the dark haired girl fell to her knees, her face blank and her body sheet white. She was shocked. Everyone was. The battle seemed to end in a blur from there, Scott racing to the girl's side being the only next significant thing. The whole pack ran up to Scott and Allison just in time to see the sweet exchange and the tears departure before Allison's hand went limp, it hit Y/n hard. She looked at Isaac and he looked back. The two locked eyes, memories going between them like they were synched up. Like the old days.

Both blinked at the same time and simultaneously looked away, Isaac trying and failing to swallow the lump in his throat and Y/n wiping a tear.

Then the ultimate thing happened.

In the last battle. The battle before everything went right again, for as long as it was allowed, right after Allison died...

Y/n got hurt.

Isaac only saw the pack around a girl on the ground. Scott picked her up and Isaac saw Y/n's face. Her beautiful, angelic features were smothered in blood. Crusted with red. Covered in ruby. But it wasn't pretty. It was dooming. Isaac froze when he saw Y/n's broken body. His face contorted and Lydia raced forward to see what was wrong. She reached her hand out, but Isaac shot away, disgusted not with her but with himself.

After seeing Allison die. After seeing Scott get destroyed and ripped apart. After having that moment where it was suddenly so real. He could actually lose her. For real. Forever. After all that, he didn't apologize. He didn't work his ass off in every way to FIX THINGS.

Now she was dead?

Scott started to walk away and Isaac shot forward. Derek caught him just in time, but Isaac's eyes were locked on Y/n's still form in Scott's arms, and he wolfed out, fighting as hard as he could to get to her, no emotions but desperate anger and no though but her name, echoing like a word yelled into a cavern. Y/N Y/N Y/N Y/N Y/N Y/N!

"LET ME GO!" Isaac screamed. "LET ME GO TO HER!"

"Isaac calm down!" Derek insisted, gritting his teeth as he had to wolf out too, the effort of keeping Isaac pinned down actually becoming a struggle.

"LET. ME. GO. PUT HER DOWN! SCOTT! SCOTT PUT HER DOWN! SHE'S NOT DEAD OUT HER DOWN! LEAVE HER ALONE! DON'T TAKE HER! NOT HER! Not-" Isaac's voice cracked and he started crying. Everyone looked at Isaac like he'd lost his mind.

They could remember one especially nasty argument...

(Memory)

"You're such a brat!" Isaac sneered. "You think everyone owns you something."

"That's not fair," Lydia stated, confused at Isaac's overly focused anger today.

"She wasn't paying attention during watch and almost got us all killed and when I call her out on it she wants an apology? And then she wants someone to take over patrol because she's SO TIRED. After sleeping on her shift. She didn't do anything!" Y/n just stood there, trying to hide her pain, arms crossed, eyes angry and heartbroken.

"I was on shift too," Stiles pointed out. "Why aren't you mad at me?"

"Well- You-" Isaac sputtered. Then he came up with something to say. "You stayed up all night last night doing research. If you fall asleep, then okay. You DID something. She's just lazy."

"Don't talk about me like I'm not here," Y/n finally snapped, her hands clenching to fists.

Isaac scoffed. "Oh. I'm sorry PRINCESS. Did your feelings get hurt?" Isaac snarled back.

Y/n rolled her eyes nastily. "So you think I don't do anything huh?" Y/n demanded, stepping up to him, her shoulders squared and her nose turned up so her eyes could challenge him. He was so tall compared to her. So big. And super powered. The team was suddenly nervous, not wanting to step in between this fight, but thinking they might have to, if it got too nasty.

"Yeah," Isaac snapped, stepping up to her as well. "Got a problem?"

""I seemed to be doing plenty when I stopped your dad from beating the shit out of you when we're what, ten?" Isaac immediately flinched. The reaction shot a bolt of pain in Y/n's chest, but she was hurting and she wanted him to hurt too. "When my ten year old self, small body, female abilities and all, stood up for the cowering boy who was several months older than her to HIS DAD who he couldn't even look at. I was doing PLENTY THEN WASN'T I ISAAC!"

Isaac's eyes watered. "Says the girl who used to climb in my bedroom at night when her mommy wouldn't listen to her stupid girly rants with stupid girly tears in her eyes, crying about how hard her stupid girly problems were," Isaac grunted, his eyes turning gold. Y/n eyes burned and Scott jumped in the middle, pushing them apart.

"That's enough!" He barked, his eyes glowing red. "STOP!"

Isaac stepped back immediately. Y/n couldn't get out of the house fast enough. That night Y/n couldn't sleep, her chest tight and her throats shut so she felt like she couldn't breathe. Isaac curled in a ball, his knees to his chest, his lungs desperate for air as he dug his werewolf nails into his palm, using the pain to find control.

(End of memory)

That same boy, that loathed Y/n so completely and fully, could now be so hysterical and such a mess over her being gone? Dead? As sick as it sounded, everyone thought he'd be...

Relieved.

Derek held Isaac there as Scott took Y/n to the hospital. Once Isaac relayed the whole story to Derek after he calmed down, Derek told him something that changed Isaac's whole life. After being silent and stoic, giving no kind of response at all during Isaac's whole story, the words that Derek told him once he was done shook him, to his core.

"You love her."

That's all. After those three words, Isaac's whole story was dumb and all his reasons were pointless. Isaac looked at Derek seriously.

"I have to see her."

Derek gave a rare, super small smile. "Go get her, Isaac. Don't let her get away."

Isaac went to the hospital, desperate to tell her.

Be alive. Be alive. God please be alive...!

She was. She was siting up in the hospital bed with nothing worse than a fixed broken nose. When Isaac came in, Y/n met his gaze evenly. Lydia had relayed the crazy reaction Isaac had had and she knew what he was here for. The look on his face, in his, written by his body language, only confirmed it.

"Can we have a moment alone please?" Y/n asked the pack politely. Lydia, Stiles, and Scott all exchanged looks. Partly shocked, partly teasing, mostly thinking "Oooooh! COUPLE! YES!"

When the room emptied, Isaac and Y/n looked at each other for a long time, the silence heavy and killing. Then Isaac started word vomiting.

"I was hurt. I was hurt that you with Spencer and not with me. I liked you so much Y/n and I didn't know how to handle my emotions. I didn't know how to handle the jealousy or the rage. I didn't know how to properly apologize, or handle the whole of the situation after you said... said those things. You hurt me, and I didn't know what else to do, so I hurt you back. I know that's past pathetic, but it's true."

Another long silence.

"I'm sorry too," is all Y/n says. She raises her arms, making grabby hands for Isaac. Isaac beams, unadulteratedly, excitedly climbing over the foot of the bed to get to her side and curl up next to her. Her forehead rests on his and his breath hitches as her lips ghost the corner of his mouth.

Then he does something he should have done a long time ago.

He kisses her.

He really kisses her.

And that's all she needed him to do.

When they part, he holds her so gently she feels like glass. She feels special, important. It's a magical feeling, so out of place in a life she's gotten used to her where he boy she's been so devoted to for so long hates her guts to every complete and full extent. Now they're good again. Not totally good, but it's a lot more fixed now.  Now they can work it all out and sort through the mess that their relationship became.

Then he says three words that completely sets the mood, making her hopeful, seeing the possibility of an actual, positive future with him again. Like old times. "I love you," he says.

She smiles. She returns with four words now, and he sees the same promising, coming times she does. Both are content.

"I love you," he says.

"I love you too," she responds.
