Ethan's p.o.v

The next morning I realized I overslept so when I entered the kitchen they were all ready.

“Where is Jackie?” I asked as I noticed everyone but her. Erika was the only one who answered.

“Not even a good morning?”

“Sorry. Good morning.” I scratched the back of my head nervously. How did I just embarrass myself like this?

“Did you just blush? If I knew that all it took was what happened yesterday…” Erika teased me. Oh I am not your sister, little girl.

I sat down quietly.

“What happened yesterday?” Her dad asked me suspiciously.

“Did I mention we found out what happened to Jackie’s cereal and who ate it?” I gave Erika a look and she knew to shut her mouth.

“He helped me with some homework I was worried about.” She convinced her father and glared at me. I am sensing a war is coming.

“Oh Jackie is out with Pebble, she woke up earlier today.” Her mother was kind enough to give me the information I needed. Not like I wasn’t going to find out eventually.

“She could have invited me along. I would have kept her company.”

“Don’t worry sweetheart. She is used to doing things alone.” Her mother handed me a plate of muffins.

Jackie was too used to doing everything alone. Eventually it made her close up inside. I know how that feels and at least her sister should have tried to get Jackie to feel like she can depend on someone. No wonder she doesn’t trust or let anyone near her built up wall.

“I’m back.” Jackie yelled as she got home. She was glowing as she came in the kitchen smiling.

That smile was kind of…nice.

“You are in a happy mood.” Her mother observed her carefully.

“Of course I am.”

My skipped a beat, could it be because of the kis…

“I just ran into our old neighbor Mr. Stanley, you know the psychologist and he gave me this book about human behavior which gives detailed information on how to get into a person’s head. This is so great; I could see a lot of criminals in jail because of this.” She waved the book happy and I tried to masquerade my disappointment.

“Only you could be happy about getting a book like that.” Erika got up and took her bag. “I am walking today. Have a good day everyone.” She flashed me a look before leaving. Yap, definitely a war coming.

To my further disappointment Jackie seemed to ignore me reading her new book all the way to school and not letting a single word out of her mouth.

As we entered the school she still hanged on to her book and avoided talking to me.

As we entered the classroom a lot of people were buzzing about something.

“You will never believe this but all the stolen things were given back.” A girl that sat in one of the front desk told her friend.

“But because of that they easily found out who took them in the first place. And now they are expelled.”

“What? Really? Well that’s what they deserve.”

“You knew this will happen, didn’t you?” Suddenly Jackie spoke to me.

“Yes.”

“I just hope this won’t get you in trouble with them.” As she said that she went to her seat and it leave me wonder. Did she care that much to worry or was she merely trying not to feel guilty because it was her who put me in that position in the first place. Hmm, maybe I should take a look in her book too.

“Hi..”

As I was putting some things in my locker a girl spoke to me. I turned towards her.

“I’m amm..Gilly.. We haven’t met before but I amm..I wanted to invite you to a party.” She smiled politely and handed me a flyer . I looked at it and they gave it back.

“No thank you.”

“Why?” She suddenly seemed heartbroken.

“I don’t go to high school parties.”

“Oh…” She seemed disappointed so I just closed my locker and walked away.

It wasn’t long until I was in the cafeteria with Dom when another girl approached me. This one was a little more confident though.

“Hey Ethan.”

“Hey.” I replied dryly.

“I heard you are doing well in all the classes, would you like to tutor me?”

I raised a brow “On what subject?”

“I don’t know, what ever you want.” She winked at me and I reached for my tie to loosen it. I wish Logan was here. He did a good job chasing this kind of problems away.

“I don’t think so.” I kept walking but she popped in front of me again. “Do you want my number if you change your mind?”

“I don’t think…”

“Great. She handed me a piece of paper knowing that I wouldn’t get my phone out if I rejected her in the first place. This one was persistent. I reached for the wrist band around my hand but I remembered I gave it to Plush.

I haven’t seen her since this morning and I really wanted to talk to her.

“I said I wasn’t interested.” With that I walked pass her, and Dom followed me without saying anything.

Tazia and Plush showed up and she was still reading her book. I needed a plan, quick.

“Hey Plush.”

“Hm..” She answered absently.

“Did you tell Tazia and Dom you had your first kiss?”

She suddenly raised her head blushing. I knew it. I knew that would shake her out of it. Even though I said I wouldn’t mention it I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut.

“With who? When?”

“With me.” I said smiling but as soon as I saw her face I knew I had made a mistake.

“Yeah I kissed him. It helped me connect to my sister.” And then she hit me. “And that’s for telling people something that isn’t your business. I would have told them if I thought it was necessary.”

Ouch. That stung so I shut my mouth and looked away. She went back to reading her book and the silence began.

As it rang for class she got up and left.

“She is usually cold like that, you’ll get used to it.” Dom smiled and left too. I looked at Tazia and she smiled.

“If it’s any consolation she is a lot more emotional since you came around so it’s a progress. It’s all new to her so I would suggest being a little more patient.”

I didn’t say anything as she left but I felt slightly better. Having a girl give you advice seemed a lot better then when Logan and Landon gave me theirs about some things.

It was the first time I had walked to her house alone. She didn’t even wait for me like she usually does. As I arrived home I noticed her shoes thrown around which was unusual. She liked everything neat and clean. I thought about apologizing but I didn’t really know what I was supposed to apologize for.

For being too upfront? For reminding her that we kissed? Did she regret making that decision, were things different now?

I walked in her room without knocking wanting to say I’m sorry without her stopping me. She was on her bed hugging a plushy toy and playing with my wrist band deep in her thoughts. I smiled in relief and then knocked on the edge of the door interrupting her thoughts.

She jumped surprised and aimed for the book the same second.

“I came to talk.”

“I’m busy.”

“I just need five minutes.”

“Why?”

“To apologize.”

She raised her look and I walked over sitting next to her. “I’m going to be honest here Plush. I didn’t know what I said would insult you. I’m sorry.”

“No.”

“Hm?”

“You shouldn’t apologize. I…I thought you would ignore it.” She calmly said not looking at me and hugging her knees putting the toy away.

“Ignore the kiss?”

She flinched but tried to cover it. “I am a girl of intellect; I don’t get to react to things like that. I’m sorry it it’s normal to you to talk so freely but I just can’t.”

I put my hand on her head slowly stroking her hair. “Did you forget how we met? I am in the same boat as you Plush. I don’t do romance and relationships or talk about it. But lately I seem to be doing so, a lot with you.”

“So it’s not weird if I can’t talk about it openly?” She asked me with puppy eyes which I just thought made her beautiful.

“Well not to others. You can talk to this pervert here.” I smiled and she elbowed me but laughed.

“Do you want to hear what I found out from this book?” She asked eagerly.

“I do. What are you reading about in specifics?

“Well I paid attention mostly to the human mental response then the body language wanting to discover few tricks in how they thought and what could…”

As she spoke I never felt happier in my life. It’s like she spoke a language only the two of us can speak and I suddenly didn’t feel so alone anymore.

“This is just adorable.”

I opened my eyes slowly and then noticed Jackie’s mom taking pictures with her phone. I quickly realized I had fallen asleep.

Once Plush and I started talking about a subject a lot of debates came up and it ended up, us doing a thorough research. One question of matter lead to another and while reading we must have fallen asleep. I remember Jackie already had her eyes half closed while writing some stuff aside and I felt tired as well.

And now she slept sitting with the laptop in her lap, leaned on the wall with her back and her head on my shoulder, while I was in the same position.

“You just keep on resting hon.” She winked and left the room. But I was past sleeping right now. I gently placed down Jackie on her pillow and put all of the stuff aside. She slept so peacefully and calm I thought about just sitting there starring at her but I walked downstairs instead.

I regretted the decision immediately.

“Look how cute they are.” Her mother was showing Erika and her father the photos.

“They sure look cozy.” Erika smiled and her eyes narrows at me like she had already won the war.

“Good evening everyone. I’m sorry for the absence. We were doing homework for school.”

“Of course you were.” Erika smiled and I looked her Dad. “Can I talk to you in private sir?”

He got up and we both walked in the kitchen.

“Do you have any information about the infiltration sir?”

“Stop calling me sir Ethan.” He smiled and then sat on one of the chairs. “I am afraid we don’t. It’s a dead end. There is no sign of anyone from your organization that we contacted before and the criminals who broke in your organization are nowhere to be found. Probably looking for you since you are their only lead.”

“What if they find me and I put your family in danger?” I asked him honestly wanting to know the truth.

“I won’t let that happen simple as that. That’s why tomorrow I am going to the FBI. It’s Saturday so there won’t be a lot of fuss. I will make copies of everything we found and didn’t found in your facility and I am going to bring them here so you and Jackie can take a look at them. I think both of you together can spot something a lot faster then us but the only reason I didn’t so far it was because I didn’t want to put you under any more pressure.”

“I assure you I am fine.”

“I don’t doubt that you are, but as a father of two children, whom one of them works daily with me on cases believe me when I say pressure is inevitable.”

“I..”

He stood up interrupting me what I had to say and put a hand on my shoulder. “Listen, I know you might be the smartest detective alive but…You are also a teenager and as much as I would want to look at you without worrying I can’t. Just, leave the protection to me and be a normal teenager undercover alright?”

I nodded my head without protest and the smiled squeezing my shoulder tighter. “Great. I also hope you were really doing homework.”

With that eyed me and left me in the kitchen. Erika walked few minutes after him. I opened the fridge to eat ignoring her.

“Do you like my sister?”

“Of course I do.” I answered quickly and took some of Jackie’s cereal pouring them with milk.

“I meant do you like-like her? As you want to kiss her again?!” She was persistent. I took a bite out of the cereal. They were so sugary no wonder she was the only one who liked them. Well me too. Obviously our taste buds for sweets were the same. It was cute to know we shared same tastes.

“That is none of your business Erika, knowing she doesn’t put her nose in yours, you shouldn’t either.”

“I can tell Dad you like her.”

“And I can tell him you have a boyfriend.”

She glared at me and sat across me.

“I can tell him you kissed her.”

“I can tell him you bring your boyfriend over to this house. Alone, when there isn’t anyone home.”

She crossed her hands now really angry at me while I just peacefully ate my cereal.

“You don’t stand a chance. My sister doesn’t know what love is even if it comes in one of her cases.”

“I disagree.” My mind flew to her books. She knew romance alright.

“Don’t get your hopes up Ethan. She isn’t a typical girl.”

That’s precisely why I thought highly of her.

Jackie’s p.o.v

I woke up hungry and disoriented. Probably from too much sleep. I did my usual routine and then noticed it was still too early for school. And then I thought of something even more funny. It was a weekend.

I walked downstairs knowing everyone was still sleeping and made myself some breakfast. I was in a good mood mostly because Ethan and I spent the whole day yesterday together talking about different subjects and doing research. I never felt close to anyone before like that and I hated to admit it, I liked having someone sharing my interests. I wanted to thank him somehow so I decided a nice set of pancakes would be great.

Tazia called to ask me if I and Ethan were on good terms and I confirmed it trying not to give my genuine happiness away.

I wanted Ethan to be the first one to try my pancakes so I slowly tiptoed to the couch and hesitated before waking him up.

He could just want to keep on sleeping? But then again I know he likes sweet things. But he looks so cute while sleeping; maybe I shouldn’t wake him up. But I want him to try to pancakes. He looks too big for this couch maybe we should use the one that’s flexible but it’s in my room and it could be weird for him to sleep in my room. It’s best if I consult mom about this. But later.

I saw the plush toy he was still sleeping with. I instantly touched the rubber band he had given me. It meant we had like a secret bond of friendship. I didn’t understand it but I liked it.

“Hey Ethan.” I whispered slowly nudging him  but he was still asleep. I sat next to him wondering how I should wake him up without still touching him. It made me uncomfortable and weird for doing it the first time. He was always warm and strong and I did not want those feelings.

“Ethan will you wake up?” I leaned and whispered in his ear avoiding touching.

“What time is it?”

“Amm..early?” I told him and he suddenly pulled me down to lay next to him with back pressed to his chest.

“Then why are you waking me up Plush?”

As I felt his breath on my neck I immediately pushed his hand away and rolled to the ground. He opened his eyes and chuckled.

“This couch is more comfortable. Come back up and we can continue together.”

“I made pancakes for you, you idiot. But you can just go back to sleep.” I rose ignoring the flush in my cheeks. Stupid idiot. And I was making pancakes. I am the stupid one.

There wasn’t a minute later he showed up in the kitchen with his loose pajamas and sat on the table.

“Can I get some of those pancakes now?” He grinned. “Please.”

My anger surprisingly left quickly. I smiled. “Fine. I made them for you anyways.” I put a plate in front of him. “I wanted to thank you for yesterday. It was fun.”

“It was fun for me too.” He smiled and dug in the pancakes.

“Are they good?” I asked wanting to get the same reply as I got when I made the deserts.

“These are extraordinary.” He said with his mouth full. I grinned happily.

“Probably because you made them.” He added and my cheeks flushed immediately.

After he was done he drank a whole full glass of water and smiled.

“Now that I had this delicious breakfast what should we do? It’s Saturday.” He asked smiling.

I was wondering the same thing before but I got an idea.

“I am taking you shopping.”

“Did I hear the words you, me and shopping in the same sentence?” He looked at me confused.

“You have a little number of clothes because you left in a hurry and I have the responsibility to help you out with that because you came to me in the fist place.”

“Just me and you?” He asked.

I wondered why he asked, I sure wasn’t going to call mom and dad with us.

“Just us.” I added

“Alright I am up for it.” He smiled.

“Give me a minute to change.”

I quickly put all of the dishes on the dishwasher and then went to the living room just to walk in on Ethan while zipping his jeans with his shirt still off. He didn’t notice me so I just turned around and walked back in the kitchen.

I waved my hands at my face to calm down the blush I am sure was there.

“You okay?” I turned around to full dressed Ethan.

“I am great. Let’s go.”

I left a note, grabbed my wallet and we went shopping.

Few hours had already passed and Ethan got everything he thought he needed so when he offered to seat somewhere I was more than happy to accept. My feet were killing me.

“I want one piece of this, two of these and a three of these.”

I watched as Ethan ordered food like it was his last day on earth.

“I would like one chocolate mousse please.”

“Is that going to feed you properly?” He looked at me confused.

“It will have to do.” I smiled and then looked outside the window as people were tugging on their coats and walking around.

“If it was warmer we could have take Pebble with us.” Ethan said to get my attention.

“Yeah. I hate when I don’t spend a lot of time with him. He gets lonely. ”

As I said that Ethan paid specific attention to my face. I was confused to why he did that but I was in a way too much of a good mood to say anything to ruin it.

“I was thinking…mm” He started. “If you wanted to go see a documentary with me, I think I saw a bookshop few stores down that had a projection about…”

My heart started pounding because that sounded like an invitation for a date. I’ve seen it in movies, read it in books and noticed how guy hit on Tazia. But there was no way that he would even consider something like that because…well he was talking to me.

“So what do you think, should we go?” He asked smiling and waiting for an answer. I was scared to say yes but I was even more scared saying no.

Plus that documentary sounded interesting.

“Okay.” I agreed and started eating the chocolate mousse as the waiter brought it.

Awwww this chapter is just so cute. :3 ♥ I can't wait for the next one. It will be pretty funny ;)
