X’s p.o.v
After two days of complete uselessness I decided to contact L. I arranged a meeting and sat in my office waiting for her call. Right on time…
“X on the line.” I answered smiling.
“Is it just me or you sound cheerful?” L asked.
“These damn voice changers make you think all kinds of stuff. Me cheerful? Nah.”
“So what is then the reason for your dreadful mood?” Sarcasm didn’t escape her.
“As a matter of fact I just happened to solve the case.”
“What?” She sounded alarmed instead of happy.
“Are you alright L?”
“You solved the case?”
“No. But I am very surprised from your reaction. Weren’t you supposed to be happy if we did solve the case?”
“Yes. We or me. Not you.”
“Now, should I be insulted?”
“No, of course not. This has nothing to do with you.”
“Of course.” I suddenly felt very pleased to have figured out her plan.
“Of course what?”
“So that’s why you were alarmed. You want to be the first one to solve the case and then everyone will be so astonished you solved it without my help and they recruit you. You are looking for a job!”
After a second of silence she spoke. “I would have come up with another theory but what’s the use. Yes I do want a job.”
“High ambitions.” I added.
“High ambitions for a highly intelligent person.” I could swear she almost sang that part.
“Well if that’s really the only thing that worries you, your problem is solved.”
“It is?”
“Yes. I will recommend you for a job here, after we solve the case.”
“Oh. Now I feel bad.”
“Like I said. The problem is solved. The only thing you need to focus on, it’s the case.”
“Yes, well. I tried not focusing but I never got the illumination I was hopping for.”
“Me neither.” Suddenly one of the secretaries came in and left a piece of cake on my desk quietly walking out.
“Oh.” I sighed getting my hands on the cake.
“What?”
“I just got this big piece of cake and I haven’t eaten anything more delicious in a while.
“Ugh. Don’t talk about that. Now you got me thinking about food.”
“I think I taste cinnamon frosts over this dark chocolate part. And then, what is this? Looks like strawberry pieces but there is something else that makes the taste interesting. I think its butterscotch. It really is delicious.” I observed the cake carefully and put a piece in my mouth.
“I will hang up if you don’t stop talking.” She said annoyed.
“I think the last cake I ate it was a luxurious layer cake. With a fabulous bittersweet filling. The chocolate cake was topped and filled with rich vanilla butter cream and crunchy bits of oreo cookies mixed in, finished off with a coconut layer around the sides. Perfect with a glass of milk. It reminded me of childhood.”
Call ended. I looked at the screen. She wasn’t joking. I called her back and she answered.
“Are you done?” She asked.
“Have you ever eaten a Tiramisu cake?”
Call ended. Okay I think I am pushing my luck here. I called her back. Good to know food has this effect on her. Wait why am I thinking that?
L.’s p.o.v
“This better be the last time you talk about cakes.” I said after he called back the second time.
“It was just food.” He stated like it was nothing.
“Yeah but…” But the way you talked about deserts was like an artists talking about paintings, smooth and soothing like a sensual lover…
“I am hungry. It annoys me.” I added that in the conversation. What the hell is wrong with me? I am an intellectual. I don’t think about philosophy or what ever those thoughts were in my head.
“I’m sorry. I am done with that now. Do you want to change the subject?”
“Yes.” Please.
“Fine. Do you think we will ever solve this case?”
“Of course we will we just need the right ingredient to solve this.” Of course I had to say ingredient. Food was already clouding my vocabulary.
“Ingredient!” He said unsure.
“No other word popped in my mind.”
“Ingredient?” Now he was confusing me more.
“Yes ingredient.”
“L do you know what you just said.”
“Ingredient! I thought we were over this.”
“Remember how every victim was killed in a different violent way. Either stab wounds, a gun or some other weapon that caused the victim to bleed out.”
“Yes each murder was different.”
“That’s what we assumed but there is one murder that was different but it wasn’t violent.”
Something told me he was onto something. “The murder six months ago was by poison. Very unlikely for the murderer.”
“That means the poison wasn’t supposed to be the murder weapon. The murder wasn’t supposed to happen at all.” He added.
“He probably went to see the victim. Maybe share the “confident information” he has been stealing.”
“And the victim probably wanted to get rid of the evidence so he decided to poison his accomplice. But this one was smart and he probably saw the danger coming.”
“He switched the glasses and after the death occurred he made it look like it was part of every other job and did exactly the same he would have done usually.”
“He probably tried to sell of information to other buyers so that’s why he hasn’t stopped killing.” He stated.
“All we have to do is see who the poisoned victim talked to that month. Who he contacted the most and we will probably find some leads to the killer.” I added happy.
“We did it. We found a lead. I knew the criminal would slip eventually.”
I was so happy I wanted to jump. But I was in a public place so I contained myself. It has been a long time since I felt this rush and adrenalin from solving a case.
“This causes a celebration.” X added and I could sense the happiness.
“We still need to tell the FBI what we concluded.”
“I’ll do that L. It’s the easiest thing. You go and celebrate. See your friends and your boyfriend.”
My heart stopped there.
“I..I don’t have a boyfriend.” I somehow said it trying not to sound alarmed.
X’s p.o.v
“I’ll do that L. It’s the easiest thing. You go and celebrate. See your friends and your boyfriend.”
As soon as the words flied out of my mouth I regretted them. I started to panic. Mostly because I wasn’t used to making slips. Well not about cases. And I was always calm, when I am not put in social situations. Okay, I can fix this. Collect yourself you idiot.
“I..I don’t have a boyfriend.” She answered and I was pretty sure she was confused. I am an idiot. Well now I know she doesn’t have a boyfriend.
LIKE THAT MATTERS. What the hell is wrong with you??
“Well friends then. I don’t want to keep you from friends and family.”
“If you get me that job as you said, I will have to get used to it.”
“I only said I would recommend you, and until you get used to it, have fun.”
“Look celebrating for something no one knows I’m doing probably will be confusing and questions are going to be asked. But I advise you to go and celebrate. Don’t keep your girlfriend, friends, family waiting. We really forced our brains for this one.”
I sighed and then spoke. “I am in a similar situation as you, so the only celebration I want right now is hot chocolate and bed. Plus who has time for dating when you solve worldly crimes?”
“I agree. But I think I would add a hot shower to the list. And maybe pizza.”
Hot shower! Don’t go there. Don’t go there. Don’t go there. Damn it! Naked girl in a towel.
“Bye X. Contact me for new information.”
“I will. Take care.”
“Same.”
Call ended.
Ahhhh. I looked down. I hate when this happens.
