Riled Up

Y/n fell on top of Joi in a bucket of memories, Sadness dropping next to them. She got up, Joi checking her over momentarily for any bruising, then looked around for the core memories. "One, two, three..." he counted and sighed, holding them close in a hug. "Okay, got 'em. They're okay, but what about you, Y/n?"

"I...think so?" She looked at her limbs, confirming they were still intact. In her lap was the memory of Riley skating. Letting out a relieved sigh, she said, "Yes, I'm fine."

"Good. Then everything's great." He looked around, surprised by all the shelving. "Long-Term Memory?!" In front of him, Goofball Island had home grey and still. "Goofball Island...?"

"Oh, Riley's Islands of Personality, they're all down!" Sadness moaned. "This is bad!"

"We...we can fix this! We just have to get back to Headquarters, plug the Core Memories in, and Riley will be back to normal."

They got out of the memories, walking towards Goofball Island while Sadness kept spiraling. "Riley has no Core Memories. No personality, no..." She gasped suddenly, looking at Joi.

"What is it?" he asked, stopping.

"You. You're not in Headquarters! Without you, Riley can't be happy! We have to get you back up there."

He grasped the memories, picking up speed to Goofball Island. "I'm coming, Riley."

-

"So as it turns out, the green trash can is not recycling. It's for greens. Like compost and eggshells."

"Mmm." Bill kept eating, mostly running his wife out, while Riley picked at her Chinese container, barley eating.

"And the blue one is recycling. And the black one is trash..."

-

Disgust watched the screen, her face scrunched up. "Riley's acting so weird. Why's she acting so weird?"

"What do you expect?! All the islands are down!" Anger snapped.

She hugged herself, sighing. "Joi and Y/n would know what to do."

"That's it," Fear began with a smile. "Until they get back, we just do what they would do!"

"Great idea! Anger, Fear, Disgust. How are we supposed to be happy?!" she yelled, making Fear flinch.

-

"Hey, Riley, I've got great news! I found a junior hockey league. Right here in San Francisco. And get this: tryouts are tomorrow after school! What luck, right?"

-

"Hockey?"

"Uh-oh. What to see do?"

"Guys, uh, this - here, you pretend to be Joi." Fear pushed Disgust up to the console.

-

"Won't it be great to get back out on the ice?"

-

She apathetically drove, flicking around the controls.

-

"Oh yeah. That sounds fantastic," Riley mumbled at her takeout box.

-

"What was that, that wasn't anything like Joi!" Fear cried.

"Uh, because I'm not Joi?"

"Yeah, no kidding."

-

Jill's smile fell, replaced with concern.

-

Inside her head, Jill's emotions watched the scene play out. "Did you guys pick up on that?" her head, Sadness, asked.

"Uh-huh."

"Oh yeah."

"Something's wrong."

"Should we ask her?" her Anger asked.

"Let's probe. But keep it subtle so she doesn't notice," her Sadness directed her Joy.

-

"So. How was the first day of school?"

-

"She's probing us," Anger sighed.

Disgust stepped back from the console, pushing Fear up. "I'm done. You pretend to be Joi. Or Y/n. I don't care."

"What? Uh, okay...hm..." Hesitantly, he pushed one of the buttons.

-

Riley squirmed in her seat, looking everywhere except at her mother. "It was...fine I guess. I don't know..."

-

"Oh, very smooth. That was just like Joi. And Y/n. Someone give this man a medal."

-

"Something's definitely going on."

"She's never acted this way before. What should we do?"

"We're gonna find out what's happening. But we'll need support. Signal the husband."

-

"AHEM."

Bill kept eating, seemingly lost in thought.

-

Bill's emotions watched a hockey match that was projected on the screen, everyone cheering as the announcer spoke. "...with a nice pass over to Reeves, he comes across the center ice..."

-

"AHEM!"

-

Bill's Anger sat up from his chair and flipped the screen off to show Jill glaring at Bill. "Uh-oh. She's looking at us. What did she say?"

"What?" Bill's Fear brushed off his shirt, standing to attention. "Uh, sorry, sir. No one was listening."

"Is it garbage night? We left the toilet seat up. WHAT? WHAT IS IT WOMAN WHAT?"

-

"He's making that stupid face again," Jill's Disgust scoffed, referring to Bill in mid-chew and big eyes

"I could STRANGLE HIM RIGHT NOW!" her Anger shouted.

Her Sadness, patiently, "Signal him again."

-

Jill motioned to Riley, Bill nodding. "Ah. So Riley. How was school?"

-

"You gotta be kidding me!"

"He really needs to start paying attention."

"Is he paying attention at all?!"

"For this, we gave up that Brazilian helicopter pilot?!"

-

"Move. I'll be Joi." Anger pounded on the console.

-

"School was great. Alright?"

Taken aback, Jill asked, "Riley! Is everything okay?"

She rolled her eyes, refusing to respond.

-

"Sir, she just rolled her eyes at us," Bill's Fear informed.

"What is her deal?" His Anger learned back and gave out his orders. "Alright. Make a show of force. I don't wanna have to put The Foot down."

His Fear jumped a little, holding his head. "No...! Not The Foot..."

-

"Riley, I do not like this new attitude," he warned.

-

"Oh I'll show you attitude old man!"

"No no no stay happy!" But Anger pushed Fear away, continuing to drive.

-

"What is your problem?! Just leave me alone!" She turned away, her chair scraping against the floor.

-

"Sir reporting high levels of sass!"

After thinking for a moment, his Anger commanded, "Take it to Deacon Two."

Sirens began to go off as Bill's Joi, Sadness, and Disgust went to work. "You heard that, gentlemen! Defcon Two!"

-

"Listen, young lady, I don't know where this disrespectful attitude came from..."

-

"YOU WAN' A PIECE OF THIS, POPS?! COME AND GET IT!"

-

"Yeah, well...well..."

-

"Here it comes! Prepare The Foot!"

"Keys to safety position!" Bill's Fear took the key out and nodded to his Disgust. "Ready to launch on your command, sir!"

-

Bill narrowed his eyes, ready for impact.

-

Anger screamed, fire coming out of his head.

-

"Just SHUT UP!"

-

"Fire!"

-

Bill rose quickly from his chair, pointing at the staircase. "That's it! Go to your room!"

Riley gaped at him, seemingly snapped out of her anger.

"Now!"

"AUGH!" She pushed her chair away and stormed upstairs.

-

"The Foot is down, The Foot! Is! Down!"

Bill's emotions cheered, his Anger plopping back into his chair. "Good job, gentlemen. That could've been a disaster."

-

"Well that was a disaster," Jill's Sadness deadpanned while her Anger recalled an old memory.

The Brazilian helicopter pilot reached his hand down for Jill, the wind blowing in his hair. "Come. Fly with me, gatinha."

Her emotions sighed dreamily, fawning all over the console.

-

None of the emotions noticed Family Island rumbling in the distance, too focused on the bridge from Goofball Island connecting back to Headquarters. "We're gonna walk out there? On that?" Sadness asked anxiously.

"It's the quickest way back."

"But it's right over the Memory Dump! If we fall in there, we'll be forgotten forever!"

Y/n turned on her heel, ready to walk back. "Oh well. We tried."

Joi pulled her back, hands right back on the memories. "We have to do this for Riley. Just...follow my footsteps. Is not that high we're totally fiiiiiii..." He wobbled on the bridge, Sadness taking baby steps behind him.

But Y/n was unable to move her feet, practically hyperventilating. "Joi, I can't."

He went to turn and encourage her, but lost his footing, one slipping off, a memory nearly falling in the dump. "Whoa!" He grabbed onto it and got back up, sucking in a breath. "Uh yeah stay where you are, Y/n. I guess Riley can go without for a few days, it...it would be better than losing you."

She knew he was trying to make her feel better, but that somehow equally scared her.

-

Bill knocked on Riley's door, then opened it, peeking in. "Hey."

In her sleeping bag, Riley refused to move, staring ahead blankly.

"So uh, things got a little out of hand downstairs. You wanna talk about it?"

Still no answer.

"Come on. Where my happy girl?" He nudged her, playfully adding, "Monkey?" and began to make noises.

-

"He's trying to start up Goofball." Anger walked over to the window, Disgust and Fear following him, seeing the grey island refuse to move.

"Come on," they heard Bill urge, followed by more noises.

-

Riley looked over, then turned her head back into the bag.

-

The entire island began to shake and the way across cracked, shattering into the Dump.

"Ahh! Go back!" he yelled to Sadness. Y/n was stuck watching the island crumble around her, not realizing when Joi took her arm and pulled her away from a giant drum ready to crush her. "Y/n, run!" He threw her across, then jumped, landing on top of her and rolling, holding her close to his chest as he watched Goofball Island fall into the Dump, eyes big. "What...?"

-

Riley spun around until she fell, laughing.

-

Older, Riley and her parents jumped on the trampoline, making faces at war other.

-

As a little girl, Riley made silly faces on her father's shoulders while eating chocolate ice cream, all over her face.

-

Bill stopped, signing. "I get it. You need some time alone." Before sitting the door, he promised, "We'll talk later."

-

The emotions stood by the window, having watched Goofball Island sink.

"We have a major problem."

"Oh, Joi, Y/n, where are you?"
