Chapter 15 - Tears of Fire

Clay's POV

Clay awoke. Screams of pain screeched in his ears and he shot up in a flash. Tsunami was beside him, a grim expression etched on her snout.

"Someone's in danger!" Clay cried. Horror and panic flared in his chest and the two both ran out of the cave, leaving a mumbling Sunny behind them.

The screams stopped abruptly, and Clay leaped into a sprint, his heart pounding painfully in his chest. He could hear Sunny shouting somewhere faraway, and Tsunami's alert breath on his tail.
'
I won't lose a student. No one is going to die.'

And then, everything became worse.

He felt as if a talon was crushing and squeezing his heart.

Peril lay battered on the stone, her wings out in an awkward angle. Scratches oozed with blood along all of her sides and dust was encrusted in her scales. She was panting faintly, her breath coming out in short rasps. Crag, the new SkyWing dragonet was pinning her to the ground, her claws digging into Peril's scales.
Peril looked down at her arm. There was an armband on it, one that was not melting. Clay was to horror-struck to notice, though. Painfully, with her last spark of energy, Peril slid the arm band off, before closing her eyes and going limp.

Crag screeched, her talons bubbling and burning all of a sudden. She backed off of Peril, out of the moonlight and back into the shadows of the night.

She screamed louder, her talons burning to a crisp. Fire crawled up her arms, and Crag's eyes went wide with terror. She fell over, and a spasm surged through the SkyWing.

Tsunami roared, but it was lost to Clay. All he could see, all he cared about in this one moment of time was the Fire scales SkyWing lying on the ground. Her eyes were closed lightly, and she was hardly breathing.

"Tsunami!" Clay shouted, "Help her! Help me!" Clay knelt at Peril's side and cradled her head in his talons. Her eyelids flickered. Tsunami glanced at him helplessly; Of course she couldn't help; She didn't have Fire proof scales, and she had Crag to deal with.

"Peril, please...." Clay's voice trembled, "Stay with me. Anchor yourself to my voice. Please." The last word was barely audible.

Clay's time with Peril flashed before his eyes. Her warm scales, her joyful laugh and her amazing electric blue eyes.
And their egg. Their egg, brown with swirls of flame cascading over it.

"Clay...." whispered Peril. She shifted her head and flinched as Clay's tears burned on her cheek.

"Yes, Peril. It's me..." Crag's shrieks and Tsunami's bellows were blocked out. Only his and Peril's voice existed.

"I feel... faint...." Peril said softly. She was going pale. "I'll hold on. For you... Don't leave me." Clay sobbed, holding Peril's talons.

"I'll never leave you." Clay could hear Crag and Tsunami. 'No. I want to be with Peril. Just Peril.'

"I know you won't..." Peril went limp again, and Clay was sucked back to reality.

Peril's POV

Clay had kept her alive. His voice. His comfort.

She didn't know how much time had passed. Hours? Days? Weeks?

The light and the darkness was getting stronger. She was almost their; her tiring journey to reach it was almost over.

"Good morning Peril" The voice was wavy and wasn't that clear, but it was definitely Clay.
Peril fought to speak. She wanted so badly to open her eyes and see Clay. She wanted so badly to talk to him.

And then her eyes fluttered open.

"Peril!" Clay wrapped his wings around her. Peril snuggled into his scales, wishing she could stay there forever. Bright light blasted into her eyes, but she didn't mind; She could see Clay, and that was all that mattered.

"What happened?" She managed to rasp, rubbing her eyes. Pain flitted in her gaze, remembering her fight with Crag and the many injuries she had got.

"Crag's gone. Went back to the Sky kingdom." Clay sighed sadly, "She had a sad story. The reason she lived with her grandmother is because you killed her parents. And she had a twin, though they both had even fire, and you killed her, too...." Peril looked away, hate for her past crashing over her.

"But I didn't mean to!" Peril said, defending herself, "Scarlet made me. She used me and I knew nothing better." Clay squeezed her talon.

"It's not your fault, Peril. We understand. It was wrong of Crag to do that, but I didn't have the heart to punish her too badly. She still got punished though, for all that she did. You've already been punished enough. I hope you're fine with that." Peril didn't mind. Though Crag had hurt her, all that mattered was Clay. Not Crag. Just Clay.

"How long have I been like..."

"A week. Your scratches have mainly healed." Peril looked down. Many of them had disappeared, but many were still visible.

"Can I leave? I want to see the egg, and Turtle and Moon and-" She stopped as Clay shook his head.

"You need to rest for a bit longer. They will come to you." Peril nodded, and settled back down, lying her head on the stone.

"I have a question." Clay prompted her to go on, "Was the armband animus-touched?" Clay sighed and let go of Peril's talons, standing up.

"Yes, it was. Crag apparently had been planning that for ages. She got a young animus to enchant the armband to; 'not burn or melt when touching Peril of the SkyWing's scales and make it so she does not have Firescales.' However, you still have Firescales. Just when you wear the armband they, you know."

Peril nodded and smiled weakly. Clay brushed his wing softly with hers and left, just as Turtle rushed in.

"Peril, you're awake!" He yelped in surprise. Peril grinned.

"Yeah, duh. I've been awake for half my life, it's nothing special." Turtle rolled his eyes.

"Well, you've been sleeping for a lot longer than usual. A WEEK, in fact." Turtle spread one wing. "Moon and Qibli are here, too. And Kinkajou is coming soon, aren't you excited?" Peril hid a smirk.

Moon and Qibli entered, both beaming.

"I knew you'd wake up today," Moon insisted happily, "Your mind fire was strong this morning."

"I'm so, so happy to see you all." Peril sighed, glancing at each of them, "I bet it was pretty boring without me." Qibli lifted on eyebrow.

"Well, it certainly wasn't boring with the whole 'egg mystery' thing. It seems such a long time ago now, with everything that's happened." Turtle, Moon and Peril nodded in agreement.

'I am glad that they are here,' Peril thought, 'I'm glad to be here, right now, with my friends, with Clay, and with everyone I care about'
