Chapter 14 - Light in the Darkness

Peril's POV

"Crag?"

Peril blinked, realization crashing over her. The small, orange and red SkyWing shoved a twisted smile at Peril.

"Who else?" She cackled maniacally, tossing her head, "Your so clueless, aren't you? Killer! Monster!" Crag spat and lashed her tail.

Anger crackled along Peril's scales, "I am NOT a monster! I am NOT a killer!" Peril bit her tongue.

'But am I?'

'Will I kill Crag?'

Peril curled in her claws, growling. 'Seriously injuring' wasn't killing.

Peril leaped at Crag, batting her wings at the SkyWing's face. Though Crag was small, she was quick and had sharp claws; she feinted sideways and then slashed at Peril's eyes, missing by an inch.
Peril whirred around just in time to see Crag about to bite her tail. Peril (using her tail) smacked Crag across the snout, and, while Crag tried to regain her balance, sunk her claws into the stumbling SkyWing's arm.
Crag screeched, and bit down hard on Peril's talon. Peril roared and loosened her grip enough for Crag to break free.

Peril stared down at her talon. Deep marks etched it. One of them had broken through her scales and the hole was spouting blood.
Crag was breathing heavily, blood flowing down from her nose. Trails of blood were seeping into the cracks on her scales.

Crag suddenly charged, knocking the breath out of Peril. Claws raked at her chest, and a scream of pain escapes her. Pain clawed at her mind, and her chest kept screaming when Peril herself had stopped.  A fresh wave of pain swamped her, but Peril gritted her teeth, turning to face Crag.

The SkyWing lashed out again and again, chipping away at Peril's strength. The dragon was relentless, her energy never fading.

The sun peaked over the mountains, and pink and orange light spread over the blanket of night. Mild morning sunlight cascaded over Pyrrhia, wrapping the continent in it's warm embrace.

Peril lay panting, wriggling frantically under Crag's weight.  She was pinned; and normally, she would just heave Crag off.
But Peril was worn out, and her heart that had been beating so fast was sore. Her lungs were gasping for air, and her scales rippled with tiredness.
Making one last attempt to break free, Peril batted her wings at Crag, and clawed feebly at Crag's snout. The SkyWing smirked crookedly, eyes burning with rage.
Peril's vision began to blur 'Is she going to kill me?' Crag ran one sharp claw over Peril's neck, and Peril winced.
Peril looked down, her talons shivering.

'Oh'

A kindle of strength, a light in the darkness, flared inside her.

If she was right, she could be free.

Distracting Crag with snapping jaws, Peril unhooked the lever of the armband that Crag had slid on her scales, and watched it fall to the ground.

  And Peril knew no more.

...

Peril opened her eyes. She was surrounded by black, it's talons touching her gingerly. There was nothing and everything all around her at once, filling her mind and singing to the beat of her heart.

Voices sounded from nowhere and everywhere; Laughing voices. One sweet and kind, one a ball of fire. They two voices talked but didn't, sounds inaudible taking over everything.

Suddenly, far away in the world of night, a light shone for a moment, then got engulfed by the darkness. It flashed again, and Peril floated calmly, watching as it flickered in and out of view.

Every time, it grew stronger and stronger. Peril could feel life surging under her scales and strength filling her bones.

Determination pulsing in her veins, Peril swam towards it, pushing the heavy darkness away from her.

What do y'all think?

Yeah, I know, I'm not that good at writing plot twists like the obvious; 'It was Crag'

BUT!

Good news for you!

I'm working on it.

Anyway, expect the next chapter to come out very soon or in a while.
(Hopefully soon, obviously). And, sorry for le short chapter.

 Alrighty!
