Chapter Seven

OK, a shower in my own shower with a washcloth and sleeping in my own bed with air conditioning was wonderful. I am so happy to be home.

So, here's chapter seven for everyone!

***

Steve made it to the chamber first, red emergency lights shining all around. Every agent he found was knocked out completely. "Help me," a voice rasped, and Steve narrowed his eyes; it was the same man who had been "evaluating" Bucky. "Help . . . "

Steve stormed into the chamber, seeing him on the floor. "Get up," he spat, hauling him to his feet and against the wall. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The man smirked at him. "To see an empire fall."

Sam ran in – and was promptly attacked by Bucky. Sam quickly ducked, Bucky's fist smashing through the wall, but Bucky quickly grabbed Sam and threw him into his pod. Steve ran to engage Bucky, managing to punch him, but Bucky ignored it like it was nothing. Steve gradually gave under Bucky's assault, just managing to duck one of his punches. It went through the elevator doors; the next one Steve blocked, but buckled under the strength and fell into the elevator shaft.

***

Sam hurried out of the chamber, looking around, then spotted the "evaluator" looking down in the elevator shaft. "Hey!" he shouted.

The man bolted, and Sam quickly gave chase.

***

"Evac all civilians!" Ross ordered as everyone hurried into positions. "Get me a perimeter around the building and gunships in the air!"

"Did you bring a suit?" Clara asked Tony as they ran.

"Sure did," he nodded. "It's a lovely Tom Ford, three-piece, two-button. I'm an active-duty non-combatant."

"It does look good, though," the Doctor said.

"Really?" Saleen threw him a look.

"What? I was agreeing with him!"

"Follow me!" Sharon called, running past them. Tony, Natasha, the Doctor, Clara, and Saleen barely hesitated before running after her.

***

Tony peeked out from behind a pillar, watching Bucky pummel two guards to the ground. "We're in position," Natasha said over the comms.

Tony nodded, tapping a control on his wrist. In a few seconds, his hand was covered in one of his Iron Man gauntlets. He walked out from behind the pillar, aiming at Bucky, and sending out a stun burst. Bucky staggered, the gun he held in his hand turning away from the guard he was about to shoot, then he turned towards Tony. He managed to fire another shot before Bucky was on him. Tony ducked the punches Bucky was throwing, then brought his gauntlet up, just barely blocking the bullet Bucky fired at him. He grabbed the gun with the gauntlet, yanking it from Bucky's grip, then was sucker punched by the soldier and flew through the air.

Bucky didn't have time to go after him, as Sharon, Natasha, and Saleen were on him. Sharon got in the first punches and kicks, managing to get a leg around Bucky's neck before Bucky flipped her head over heels, smashing her into one of the tables.

Saleen was the next to try her luck, surfing on a pathway of ice she conjured, aiming at Bucky's metal arm and completely freezing it. Bucky used it to his advantage, however, sweeping his arm out and aiming for her feet. Not expecting an attack from that direction, Saleen tumbled from the ice, and Bucky gripped her by the throat, slamming her to the ground as well.

That left Natasha to jump on Bucky, wrapping her legs around his neck. However, Bucky just carried her towards another table, despite Natasha pummeling his head repeatedly. Bucky slammed her onto another table, wrapping his hands around her throat. "You could at least recognize me!" the redhead gasped.

Bucky sneered, then T'Challa was there, kicking Bucky off her. Bucky turned to fight him, and it was obvious to Natasha, the only conscious one of the three women, that they were even in fighting. Bucky had the strength to handle T'Challa's shots, but T'Challa was landing punches and kicks better than the three women combined. Bucky managed to hit T'Challa once, but the king recovered as Bucky ran up the stairs.

T'Challa didn't need to go after him. Clara burst past him, scaling the wall like it was a normal concrete sidewalk, the Doctor flying in from the opposite direction. The two time travelers were on Bucky in an instant, the man having to block attacks from each side. Bucky easily handled Clara by grabbing her throat and flinging her towards the ground level. T'Challa quickly ran to catch her before she hit her head on one of the tables. The Doctor, having lost Clara, quickly went on defense as Bucky attacked him with full force, no longer having to worry about any blows from behind. The Doctor tried to phase Bucky's metal arm through him, only to wince when he found out it was vibranium. He finally formed a fireball and fast pitched it at Bucky. He dodged, only for the Doctor to form a short staff of the Aether and hit Bucky from behind. The soldier fell over the railing, and the Doctor jumped on top of it to find him, only to see Bucky had run off.

He ground his teeth, then let the Aether dissipate before running to check on the girls, T'Challa helping Clara to her feet.

***

Sam ran outside to find himself in a crowd of panicking staff and civilians. He looked around, then spotted the man's belongings on the ground. He ran over, picking them up, hoping to find some kind of identification, but found nothing. "Sam!" Martha ran up to him, eyes wide. "What happened?"

"Guy got away," Sam ground out angrily. "Damn it!"

***

Steve made it to the roof just in time to see Jessie hit it running. "Steve!" she pointed towards the helicopter that was starting to lift off.

Steve sprinted forward, lunging for the landing gear, managing to grab it. Bucky scowled and tried to fly, but Steve grabbed onto the platform as well, wincing and pulling with all his might to bring Bucky's chopper back to the platform. The chopper suddenly slammed into the edge of the helipad, and Steve barely ducked to avoid being hit by the tail as the rotorblades were destroyed by the helipad. "Steve!" Jessie ran forward when Bucky reached out and grabbed Steve's throat before the chopper tumbled over the edge and towards the river.

Steve scrambled to try and get Bucky to release his neck as they fell towards the water –

Massive tendrils of dark red energy wrapped around, and Bucky hissed as he was forced to release Steve. He flailed as he plummeted, then an iron grip grabbed the back of his shirt. Jessie swooped down, holding him with one hand, the other one clawed towards the chopper. She managed to keep it upright, Bucky looking around in confusion. Then she sent her hand through the windshield, grabbed Bucky's head, and with one swift motion, knocked him out cold.

Steve panted, holding on to Jessie as she grabbed Bucky as well before letting the chopper fall into the river. "Thanks," he looked at her.

"You're welcome," she answered, flying towards the riverbank.

"You know Secretary Ross will be after you now, too?"

"Let him," Jessie sneered as she landed. "Secretary Ross doesn't scare me. After you faced down hundreds of Daleks, Ross is an Adipose in comparison."

" . . . an Adipose?"

***

Jessie crouched in front of Bucky, brushing his long hair out of his face as she put her fingers to his temples, closing her eyes. He was still out cold – thank goodness, she did not want to be on the wrong side of that vibranium arm – and said arm was in a vice, holding it in place. Steve was out keeping watch, Sam and Martha watching her. "You think you can help him?" Martha asked.

"I don't know how much," Jessie shook her head. "I know brainwashing when I see it. It sucks," she added over her shoulder. "But telepathy is the Doctor's thing. And Wanda's. The best I can do is try and find any remnants of what could make him turn back into the Winter Soldier and block it the best I can."

She closed her eyes, searching through Bucky's memories. Some of them, from back in the 1900s, were blurry. But recently . . .

She found where he was in his pod, banging on the door. The "evaluator" was saying something . . . something in Russian. Jessie quickly translated, then started throwing up blocks where she could. She managed to block out the first and the last words she heard, longing and freight car, before she slowly withdrew.

When she opened her eyes, Bucky was starting to stir. "Hey, Cap!" Sam shouted as Jessie stood, backing up.

Steve reentered the room as Bucky took in his arm in a vice, then stared at them. "His eyes are clear," Martha whispered.

"Steve," Bucky mumbled.

"Which Bucky am I talking to?" Steve asked.

He smiled slightly. "Your mom's name was Sarah. You used to wear newspapers in your shoes."

"Did you really?" Martha grinned at Steve.

"Can't read that in a museum," Steve said in relief.

"Just like that, we're supposed to be cool?" Sam asked incredulously.

"What did I do?" Bucky looked around at them all.

"Enough," Jessie answered.

"Oh, God," Bucky closed his eyes, hanging his head. Sam softened a little at the obvious pain Bucky was feeling at that word, and Jessie patted his shoulder. This was the real Bucky Barnes for sure. "I knew this would happen. Everything HYDRA put inside me is still there. All he had to do was say the goddamn words."

"Bucky?" Jessie walked forward and crouched in front of him, putting his hand on his knee. "Bucky, can you look at me?" He raised his gaze to her, and Jessie smiled. "I saw the words, I know what they are." He looked at her, terrified, and Jessie raised her other hand. "And I blocked the first and the last ones as best as I could."

"What?" Bucky breathed, looking at her in shock.

"I don't know how long it'll last, if it does, but I promise, I will do my best to find a way to get rid of those so you don't become the Winter Soldier again," Jessie told him.

Bucky swallowed, eyes going to Steve. "Jessie's always kept her promises," he said with a smile. "If she says she will, she means it."

"Jessie?" Bucky repeated, looking at her, frowning. "I remember Jessie Nightshade was on the Project Insight list."

"I had a makeover," Jessie grinned. "Three times, actually. Nowadays I go by the Bad Wolf." She patted his knee. "But if it makes it easier for you, I have no problem with you calling me Jessie."

"Jessie," Bucky mumbled, then nodded wearily. "Jessie."

She smiled. "Bucky, the man in there, who was he?"

"I don't know," he shook his head.

"People are dead," Steve said. "The bombing, the setup. The doctor did all that just to get ten minutes with you. I need you to do better than 'I don't know.'"

"He wanted to know about Siberia," Bucky frowned. "Where I was kept. He wanted to know exactly where."

"Why would he need to know that?"

Bucky swallowed. "Because I'm not the only Winter Soldier."

Jessie blanched at that. "Who were they?" Steve asked.

"Their most elite death squad," Bucky answered. "More kills than anyone in HYDRA history . . . and that was before the serum."

"The super soldier serum?" Martha gasped, and Bucky nodded. "All of them?"

"They all turn out like you?" Sam asked.

"Worse," he admitted.

"The doctor, could he control them?" Steve asked.

"Enough," Bucky answered.

"Said he wanted to see an empire fall."

"With these guys, he could do it," Bucky admitted. "They speak thirty languages, can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They can take a whole country down in one night. You'd never see them coming."

Sam tapped Steve on the arm and led him away as Martha walked over to help Jessie with Bucky. "This would have been a lot easier a week ago," he hissed.

"If we call Tony," Steve began.

"No, he won't believe us."

"Even if he did – "

"Who knows if the Accords would let him help."

Steve nodded in agreement. "We're on our own."

"Maybe not," Sam said slowly. Steve frowned and looked at him. "I know a guy."

***

"I don't suppose you have any idea where they are?" Secretary Ross asked angrily.

"We will," Tony promised. "GSG-9's got the borders covered, recon's flying 24/7. They'll get a hit. We'll handle it."

"You don't get it, Stark," Secretary Ross scowled. "It's not yours to handle! It's clear you can't be objective. I'm putting special ops on this."

"If Steve's got Jessie with him, there won't be special ops after you send them out," the Doctor shook his head.

"And what happens when the shooting starts?" Natasha folded her arms. "What, do you kill Steve Rogers?"

"If we're provoked," Secretary Ross said bluntly. "Barnes would've been eliminated in Romania if it wasn't for Rogers. There are dead people who would be alive now. Feel free to check my math."

"All due respect, you're not going to solve this with boys in bullets, Ross," Tony told him. "You gotta let us bring them in."

"How would that end any differently from the last time?" Secretary Ross scowled.

"Because this time, I won't be wearing loafers and a silk shirt," Tony answered. "72 hours, guaranteed."

He narrowed his eyes. "36 hours," he said, heading for the door. "Barnes! Rogers! Rogers-Jones! Wilson! The Bad Wolf!"

"Thank you, sir!" Tony called back before wincing and rubbing his chest as he slumped. "My left arm is numb. Is that normal?"

"You all right?" Natasha patted his shoulder.

"Always," Tony nodded, even though the Doctor smirked, seeing his black eye. "36 hours . . . jeez."

"Well, we're decently staffed," the Doctor shrugged. "Five of them. You two, me, Clara, Saleen. That makes five as well."

"Still, it'd be great if we had a Hulk right about now," Tony mused. "Any shot?"

"Doubt it," Natasha shook her head. "If Saleen hasn't heard anything, you think I would?"

"And do you really think he'd side with the Accords?" the Doctor pointed out.

"No," Tony admitted.

"I have an idea," the Doctor straightened.

"Me, too," Tony eyed him. "Where's yours?"

"Downstairs. Where's yours?"

Tony just smiled.

***

I knew right away in the movie that Jessie would be on Steve's side, and that was before the whole Bucky plot came up. And now it's like, who wouldn't want to see her helping him?

Steve, Bucky, and Jessie . . . that's a good combo. CaptainWinterWolf BrOT3, anyone?

The teams start to form next chapter!
