08 │such great heights

The teddy bear falls to the floor of the passenger car as Abbey rises to her feet, her fingers nervously digging into her scalp as she tries to think of a reasonable explanation as to what is happening. Worried that she may step too close to the cracked gate, Nathan stands up beside her and light grabs onto her forearm.

Another blood-curdling scream echoes from the Mirror Maze below—this one abruptly cut short.

Terrified, Abbey turns to him as she feels her eyes begin to swell. "Something's not right!"

Knowing that she's right, he doesn't argue with her this time as he considers what would be the best course of action to take. Then he realizes how slim their options are. Somehow he manages to keep his voice calm as he pulls away from her, approaching the gate. "I'll check it out."

He presses his hand against the door to slightly push it open, overlooking the edge at the long distance to the ground below. A hand clasps onto his shoulder and he turns around to see Abbey, her expression even more distraught than before.

"What?" She shakes her head, already knowing what must be going through his mind. "No! Are you crazy?"

"No." Sighing, he stops to actually consider what he is about to do and acknowledges how truly insane it is. "Maybe. But do we really have a choice? We're sitting ducks up here!"

Staring at him, she doesn't respond as she knows it's true. But she still hates the idea of him putting himself in harm's way.

He grabs her hands, peering back at her intensely. Lowering his voice, he attempts to calm the situation the best he can. "Hey, it could be nothing serious. Like I said, they're probably just messing around and being immature as usual."

Nodding, her grips tighten on his hands as she sees that the conversation is not going where she wanted it to. But he's right... at this point, they really have no choice.

"I'll go down there and check it out." He says, taking a gulp as he reprocesses the words coming from his own mouth. "And, I'll get the power on and get you down from here."

"Okay..."

Nathan cracks a smile, glancing out of the passenger car at the array of stars glistening overhead. "Till then, enjoy the view."

She lets out a short laugh, more out of anxiety than amusement, and squeezes his hands even tighter. "Just hurry up. Please."

"You got it." He nods, leaning in to softly kiss her lips. Slowly, he pulls away from her hands as he turns back to the exit, this time pushing the unlatched gate all the way open as he looks down over the edge.

Rubbing at her eyes, Abbey attempts not to cry as she watches him kneel down and slowly lower himself out of the passenger car. "And be careful!"

Clinging onto the floor's edge of the passenger car, Nathan pulls himself all the way out and finds his legs swaying over fifty feet high in the air. He takes a deep breath, trying his best not to look at the ground as he peeks down in search for something to stand on. From the open door above, a petrified Abbey watches as his feet brush against the roof on the passenger car below them. She covers her mouth, trying her best not to scream or make any noise whatsoever that would distract him, as his fingers slip from the floor's edge.

Nathan lands on the roof of the passenger car, taking a deep breath as he looks up at her and gulps. He quickly spots a long metal beam branching from the roof that connects to the center of the Ferris wheel and, without further hesitation, approaches it. As he steps onto the large stretch of metal, which slightly slants downwards, he moves slowly as he takes precise steps toward the center of the wheel. Suddenly, his shoe slips and he finds himself falling forward—barely managing to cling onto the beam as his feet kick in the air.

"Nathan!" Abbey cries from behind her palm, already imagining the worst that could happen. She leans further out the door, watching as he carefully pulls himself back up to his feet.

Sighing, he pushes on as he takes a couple of steps forward—this time moving more slow—until he reaches far enough down the bar to where he can touch the beam above. He grabs onto the other beam, using it to help keep his balance as he walks further toward the center of the wheel until he finally reaches a thin ladder.

Abbey takes a sigh of relief as she watches him climb further down the ladder, slipping out of her field of vision as he reaches the platform underneath the Ferris wheel. Feeling overwhelmed, to say the least, she sits back down in her seat and snatches the teddy bear back up from the floor. Taking her boyfriend's advice, she draws her attention to the sky as she hopes for the best. Maybe he's right. Maybe it is just their friends messing around.

At least she hopes so.

As he reaches the last steps of the ladder, Nathan jumps off and lands on the platform below. He peers up in an attempt to look at Abbey, only able to see the bottom of the passenger car as it slightly sways at the top of the wheel. He looks around, double-checking his surroundings, as he contemplates on where to go first. His eyes cast upon the Mirror Maze, where they had heard screams coming from earlier, and walks down the steps of the platform to approach it.

Walking halfway to it, he comes to a stop as he can see that the entrance door to the maze is already cracked open. Through the small slit he can see nothing but pure darkness inside. He glances back up at the Ferris wheel, realizing that the best move right now is to get the power back on and, once he gets Abbey down from that damn ride, they can looks for their friends.

Knowing that there is an electrical room somewhere, he scans the several buildings and booths scattered throughout the park. Sighing, he isn't quite sure of which way to go until his eyes land on the main office in the back of the park. He quickly walks past the base of the Ferris wheel toward it, figuring that if the electrical grid isn't in there he can at least find a map to tell him where it's located.

Abbey looks down at the teddy bear she continues to hold in her lap. She lightly strokes at the short fur on its head, as if it were a pet, and thinks back to not even an hour ago when Nathan had given it to her. Although really it was just a small gesture on his part, and he didn't even technically win it, she already knows that she is going to cherish it forever. She smiles, finding the stuffed animal oddly soothing.

In the office, Nathan finds himself digging through the papers on the desk shoved up against the left wall of the main lobby. Sighing, he frantically lifts his head up to look around at the several posters randomly placed on the walls surrounding him. He hears a sudden thud, as if something incredibly heavy had fallen to the floor, and quickly turns around to peer at the hallway behind him.

"Hello?" He asks, feeling his hands tremble against the desktop as he stares at the corridor. "It's too late for this bullshit, guys."

Not taking any chances, he glances back down at the desk for anything he can use as a weapon. Spotting a granite-looking paperweight that appears to be cut into the shape of a sphere, he snatches it from the table and clenches it tightly in his hand. Feeling its heavy weight in his palm, it makes him slightly more comfortable knowing that—if anyone were to jump out at him—he could easily knock them to the ground with one good swing.

Taking a step forward, he slowly walks down the hallway. On the left are two doors and, at the end of the short corridor, is another. He approaches the first door, twisting the knob before quickly pushing it open—revealing nothing but a small office. A desk, much smaller than the one in the lobby, sits in front of a short window that overlooks a section of the park. He carries on to the next door, finding this one already open to reveal another office identical to the room before.

Nathan's eyes shift to the last door, the one directly in front of him, and notices that it is slightly cracked. Gulping, he pushes it forward as he tightens his grip on the paperweight. The door creaks against its rusted hinges as it hits the wall, revealing a small bathroom with only two stalls. The walls that were once white are now a stained yellow and the room reeks with a smell of body odor and weeks old urine.

Certain that he had heard something, his face scrunches up as he steps inside of the restroom to approach the first stall. With the same hand that wields the granite sphere, he taps the door to push it open. Inside is nothing but an overflowed toilet that no one had cared to unclog.

Shaking his head, both at the fact that he knows he's being messed with and at the filth in front of him, he turns to the other stall. As he reaches for the metal door he takes a deep breath and, just as he pushes it inwards, the door to the restroom behind him suddenly slams shut.
