ep. 3.3

“Uhh, this is the library!” Natsu declared with his arms stretched out, presenting the direction.

“I think that’s one of the classrooms.”

“This is it!” Maybe. I don’t know. But it looks like it.

“It says bookclub room though. . .”

I really shouldn't have gone through with this plan, Natsu thought, too late to back out from his offer to help a fellow freshman out on campus. Why did he agree to tag along?

“Sorry, but it seems to me, we’ve been going around in circles.” The stranger spoke up, making Natsu even more nervous and guilty than he already was.

Maybe he should give up and tell the truth.

“S-Sorry...” Natsu ended up lowering his head, admitting defeat. “I was surprised when you came up to me, I didn't want to say no to pass up making friends.”

Instead of receiving the expected yelling and scolding for making him lose his time, the man said, “No biggie. But next time, tell a guy you wanna be friends first before hanging out.” The man gave out a chuckle, which, again, surprised Natsu.

“I must’ve taken a lot of your time.”

The man noticed how quickly his mood changed. As a way of thanking him, to lift his spirits up, he gave out his hand and introduced himself. “Gray Fullbuster. Call me Gray. We can exchange numbers, if you want.”

Natsu’s face lit up, proving Gray’s theory right. “Natsu Dragneel! Sure, type it in.”

They exchanged phones and saved in their numbers, parting ways with satisfied moods. Except, Gray was in a hurry that day and was in a foul mood when he left. Deleting his number from his contacts. “Idiot.”

Lucy and Levy couldn’t be better. They had a lot in common. And in fact, had been talking all day long, almost forgetting the fact they had another incoming roommate.

Lucy, being the observant woman she was, took mental notes on Levy’s personality. She liked books (obviously), read more than 20 in scifi, likes nonfiction the best, is a virgo and has a boyfriend named Jet who’s major is in Engineering.

“You led an exciting life, Lulu,”

Lulu and Vi, their established nicknames to each other.

“Oh, psh, it’s all because of my parents. They travel a lot because of their work.” Mr. Heartfilia works as a pilot and met Mrs. Heartfilia when she was head stewardess on his trip to France.

Vi remained stunned. “You must know a lot of culture by now. That ought to help you make impressions on first day of class.”

“It would,” Lulu agreed. “But I’m not going to.”

If her guess was correct, Vi was the critical virgo. That means having a hobby of being organized with her things, thoughts and keeping a journal, which she’ll probably be filling out any time soon tonight.

“Why?!”

“I don’t want to look like a know-it-all on the first day... that’s not going to help me with my social life.” Said Lulu while she was scrambling for a mirror inside her luggages, checking her make-up.

“Are you a gemini, by any chance?”

“Yeah, why?”

“No reason. I feel the ambiance you’re giving off.” Vi winks playfully.

“What about you, why choose communication arts?”

“I was supposed to choose creative writing. But,” Vi shrugs, “they didn’t have any slot left. Comm Arts was my third choice.”

“What was the second?”

“Astrology. I'm fond with the subject. My parents wouldn’t agree to fund me if I ever got in that. So, Comm Arts seemed like the closest. But it's okay. No matter how introverted I am, this is gonna be a challenge I'll accomplish and graduate from.” Vi declared with a strong approach with her fists shaking up in the air.

Out of topic, Lucy stood up from the ground to start unpacking. Levy decided to help her out, but Lucy refused to since she wanted to place her things in an order she wouldn't be  interested in relaying out on the first day.

“Come on, tell me how you do things, exactly.”

“Fine, but you must know, this is the first and last time I’ll ever reveal something as personal as this in the early stage of friendship.” Levy accepted the condition and gestured her to explain.

“Firstly, I brought my own coffee table to sit next to me so I can put my phone near me.”

“That is,” Vi shook her head, “the most common thing everyone knows.”

“For real?” Lucy blinked, unknown to that fact. “I.. I thought people liked placing phones under their pillow best?”

“That's... almost the same thing.”

Gray arrived at his destination, 6 minutes late at that, unfortunately. He looked over who was working by the booth and saw a blue-headed woman working behind the desk. He knocked on the desk to grab her attention. “Excuse me, is this where I send my application for student assistant?”

“Ah,” the woman sounded nervous, but as soon as she had cleared her throat and pushed her glasses back from sliding off the bridge of her nose, she was easier to talk to. “Yes. Name, please?” she was grabbing the clipboard under the desk.

“Gray Fullbuster, freshman.”

As the woman nodded, she handed the paper over for him to sign up on to start the first day with orientation. “Since you’re the earliest to apply and the only applicant for the job here today, I’ll be orienting you alone, is that okay, Mr. Fullbuster?”

“Yeah, oh and Gray’s fine.” Gray handed the board back, and started listening, taking down notes of the different categories he’d have to place the book back and simple rules as not letting anyone return the books they just read or borrowed since that would be his job to. Plus the fact they don't know which section the book came from.

“I’m Juvia Lockser. Juvia will be fine,” her smile faded a little and then came back out again to continue. “I’m actually a Student Assistant, as well. I'm the librarian's assistant. I started during summer break, that's why I learned in advance. Did I do all right?” she laughed awkwardly, fumbling with her fingers.

“Yeah, I learned the basic stuff, anyway, so that's more important, right?”

“I almost forgot. Since we're vaguely labeled as assistants, I'm not sure where you'll exactly be assigned to, but maybe once the librarian comes, she'll inform you asap.”

“Anywhere's cool. I just need to memorize the building and locations and floors...” Gray smiled nervously, scratching the back of his head. This is not good. Not for a person who has trouble with memorization. He'd have to travel back and forth all over the place just to get used to it.

“Don't worry, I'll help you out. You can ask me anything.” Juvia pulled out her phone, gesturing if he wanted to exchange numbers.

“Is it okay if I give you my number? For school-related emergencies only, I promise.” Gray smiles, hesitant in handing over his device. Juvia gave her number and hid her phone, instead, to which he found confusing. “I thought—”

“You looked nervous, so I gave you my number. That way, only you can contact me and I can't contact you back unless you text me first. Does that sound better to you?” She wasn't being cold or sarcastic at all. She was seriously considering this. “Besides, I won't be able to know who's texting since I practically listed my number as reference contact for SA's online.”

“Thanks,” he found himself breathing again, in relief. “I’ll be sure to remember.” He listed her number as Juvia - Assistant Librarian.

The minute he was done doing so, he was awkward again, not knowing what he should do in this atmosphere between them. They were thenonly ones inside. “So, uh, what are you majoring in?”

“Environmental Science. And you can go now, if you want to.” She winks, leaving a huge impression on him on how incredibly observant she was, reading his every move.
