xiv.
We finally trudge our way into the old junkyard, abandoned cars, and a bus entering our sight. Steve sighs, taking in our surroundings, pulling his shades over his eyes. "Oh, yeah," he nods his head, confidently. "Yeah, this will do. This will do just fine. Good call, dude."
He starts walking further into the junkyard, but I just pass Dustin my nearly empty bucket of meat. My arm feels like it's about to drop off. Steve drops his last few pieces of meat on the ground, leaving a trail into the middle of the junkyard, where he pours the rest of the meat leftover in all three buckets into a pile on the floor.
"I said medium-well!" A voice yells in the distance. All three of us look up to see Lucas on his bike, waving his hand. To the right of him, Max is standing there, looking slightly awkward. I turn to Dustin and shake my head. "What is she doing here?" I ask him, to which he shrugs his shoulders in response.
"Who's that?" Steve questions, referring to the red-headed girl, walking in our direction. Dustin doesn't reply so I exhale sharply, beginning to feel stressed out about the whole situation. "That's Billy's younger sister, Max," I start to explain. "If she tells Billy he's never going to talk to me again."
Dustin scrunches his face up at me and blinks his eyes, dramatically. "Billy Hargrove?" He asks me, almost disappointed in me. I nod my head and he just sighs, shaking his. "What has this world come to?" He then walks off and heads towards Lucas, asking him for a sidebar.
Steve ignores Dustin's comment and turns to me and Max. "Start grabbing odd pieces of scrap metal and pile it up over by the bus," Steve instructs us. We all carry on doing that for a while before Max walks over to me.
"Does Billy know where you are?" She asks me, to which I just shake my head. "Does he know you're with Steve?" I shake my head again. She pauses for a moment and nods her head. "Don't worry, I won't tell him."
I smile at her softly and nod my head at her. "Thanks, Max," I say in almost a whisper. "I appreciate it." She smiles and walks away, carrying on piling up metal.
"Hey! Dickheads!" Steve yells to Dustin and Lucas, hitting an old, metal fold-up chair on a car. "How come the only one helping us out is this random girl?" He asks them, pointing to Max. "We lose light in like forty minutes. Let's go." The two boys stand there looking at him for a moment. "Let's go, I said!"
"All right!" Dustin yells back, following him out into the open again. "Asshole! God! Okay, stupid."
We Demogorgon-proof the bus and all of us climb into it, closing the door behind us. The sun has pretty much just set and it is starting to get dark. We all sit in pretty much silence for around thirty minutes while Lucas is on top of the bus, keeping a lookout.
I watch Steve as he plays with his lighter, opening it and letting it light, then closing it again. It reminds me of when we fought the Demogorgon the first time at Jonathan's. The night I confessed to Steve I liked him. I don't even know for sure if I still like him anymore. There's Billy in the picture now and something might not come from it but there are definitely feelings there - despite the amount of fighting we do.
"So you really fought one of these things before?" Max questions, interrupting my train of thought. I nod my head in response.
"No," Steve shakes his head at me. "I fought, she entered the room as the fight was coming to an end," he corrects, still looking at me with wide eyes.
"And you're like totally 100% sure it wasn't a bear," she suggests, her arms crossed over her chest.
Dustin scoffs, stepping towards her. "Shit. Don't be an idiot. Okay?" He says, extremely aggressively. "It wasn't a bear. Why are you even here if you don't believe us?" He asks, looking her dead in the eyes. "Just go home," Dustin shakes his head at her.
Max shakes her head, standing up and heading to the ladders to sit with Lucas. "Geesh, someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?" She carries on to climb up the ladders and I groan in pain from watching that scene unravel.
"That's good," Steve begins, nodding his head. "Just show her you don't care." I shake my head at Steve and he shrugs his shoulders at me.
"I don't," Dustin denies, exhaling sharply at Steve. He sends a wink to Dustin and he furrows his brows in return. "Why are you winking, Steve? Stop."
Dustin walks away and sits at the other side of the bus. Steve looks at me and knits his brows together. "You okay?" He asks me, quietly, scanning my face. "You look like you want to talk." I hesitate for a moment. Now could be a good time to finally talk about us. I shake my head at him. I don't want to risk not talking to him for months on end again. Not this time. "I could use a talk if that's okay?"
I nod my head at him. "Yeah, sure," I reply, just as quietly. "What's on your mind?" I ask him, moving to sit next to him.
Steve rests his elbows on the top of his knees and keeps his eyes fixed on his lighter. "I was thinking about the night at Jonathan's," he explains, coming to a pause. "You know, with that girl bringing it up and stuff," he trails on, beginning to stammer a bit. "Well... More about the hospital, after."
I shake my head, feeling my eyes beginning to tear up. "Just don't," I tell him, trying to fight back the tears. "I don't want to talk about this."
Steve's face fills with confusion. "Why?" He asks me, looking at me this time. "What's wrong?"
" 'Why?' " I repeat, turning to face him. My eyes become fixated on him. "Maybe because the last time we had this conversation, you didn't end up speaking to me for months and it got that bad, Nancy had to buy me a Christmas present from you."
Steve's eyes widen. He opens his mouth to speak but closes it again. "How did you find out it was her?" He questions, knitting his brows together.
I scoff and shake my head at him. "Do you even know what she bought?" I ask him, to which he hesitantly shakes his head. "A cinnamon candle," I add on. Realization fills Steve's eyes in an instance. "And I know that you know I don't like cinnamon."
He takes a moment to reply to me, trying to find the right words. "Liz," he begins, taking in a deep breath. "The reason I didn't talk to you for all that time was because I was scared," he admits. "I was scared to tell you that-"
Steve is cut off by a growling noise in the distance. The three of us stand up, immediately and all try to look out of the same, small window at the side of the bus. Fog coats the ground on the outside as we scan our surroundings. "You see him?" Dustin speaks up. Steve and I shake our heads. "Lucas! What's going on?" Dustin yells up to him.
"Hold on!" Lucas yells back from the roof. We wait a few moments for him to look through his binoculars. "I've got eyes! Ten o'clock. Ten o'clock!"
We all look in the direction Lucas tells us and Steve is the first to spot it. "There," he says, pointing in the direction of where he sees it.
"What's he doing?" Dustin asks, watching the baby Demogorgon skulk around the junkyard. Steve shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head. A low chittering noise sounds in the distance.
"He's not taking the bait," Steve points out, looking at the pile of meat we left for it. "Why is he not taking the bait?"
I think for a few moments and look at him. "Maybe he's not hungry," I suggest, looking at Steve.
He nods his head in agreement. "Maybe he's sick of cow," he adds on. Steve steps back to stand up straight. He stands still for a few moments, almost in thought.
I watch him intently and pray to God he's not planning on doing what I think he's doing. "Steve," I warn him. "Steve, we're not doing this again," I shake my head at him, referring back to Jonathan's. "Sit back down, right now. You have no clue what you're getting yourself into."
"Steve?" Dustin questions, clicking onto what is going on. "What are you doing? Steve?"
"Steve!" I yell at him, my heart beginning to race. "Steven James Harrington, you sit your ass back down now, or I swear to God I will kill you myself."
He turns around to face me before he walks out the door and holds up his lighter. "I'm sorry Lizzie, but I have to do this. Just get ready," he tells me before throwing me the lighter. While my attention is focussed on catching the lighter, he turns and heads out of the door, carrying the infamous bat.
The door creaks open as he leaves and Dustin closes it behind him. I quickly rush towards the window to watch him. He twirls his bat around in his hand and carefully walks out into the open. I hear chittering coming from just beyond Steve, to which he responds with a whistle to try and lure it out.
Max quickly makes her way down the ladders and heads towards us. "What's he doing?" She exclaims, worrying for Steve's safety.
Dustin gulps before turning to face her. "He's expanding the menu," he tells her.
"Dustin!" I yell. He turns to look at me, confused. "Shut the hell up, he's not going to get eaten!"
Max shakes his head, watching Steve close in on the Demogorgon. "He's insane," she says out loud, peering out of the window. Dustin's face fills with a smile and he shakes his head. "He's awesome," he corrects her.
"Steve!" Lucas screeches from on top of the bus. "Watch out!" I lunge towards the window to find two more demon Demogorgon babies closing in on Steve from behind. "A little busy here!" He yells back, not taking his eyes off of the first Demogorgon. "Three o'clock! Three o'clock!" Lucas shouts down to him.
Steve turns his head to see the others. I run to the door, pulling it open. "Steve!" I shout to him. "Steve! Get the hell back in here! Steve!" He turns to face me before quickly turning back to the creature in front of him. It lunges forward, but he dodges by rolling over the hood of a car. As soon as he lands, he swings his bat, hitting one in the face.
Every one of us yells for him to hurry as he runs back to the bus. He dives into the bus, stumbling onto me, causing us to fall to the floor. The door quickly closes to the sound of a crashing noise on the door.
I look Steve in the eyes, both of us still on the floor. I quickly stand up, helping him up along the way. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" I yell at him, punching him in the chest. He yelps out in pain, holding the spot where I hit him. "You could've died, you absolute dumbass! I could've lost you out there!"
"Now is not the freaking time!" Lucas yells at us as more creatures begin to close in on the bus, ramming into the sides, trying to find a way in.
"Are they rabid or something?" Max questions as one hit the side, causing us all to fall into a big pile on the floor.
One of them finds a weak spot in the bus, where we covered up a hole in the bus with a metal plank. "They can't get in!" Dustin yells in a panic. "They can't!" Steve pushes the metal plank back against the wall of the bus with his feet while pushing his back against the rest of us in a huddle.
One of them manages to squeeze into a gap and all the kids run to the other side of the bus. Steve throws his bat around like a lunatic, putting all his strength into swinging the bat at the creature attacking us. It leaves the gap and the bus goes silent for a few moments. Nothing ramming into the sides. No chittering. Nothing.
Nothing until we hear footsteps on the roof of the bus, making their way to the exposed hole in the roof by the ladder. Max, who is standing beneath it, slowly looks up in fear, screaming at the sight of the creature popping its head in. "Out of the way! Out of the way!" Steve yells, pushing her back. "You want some? Come get this!" Steve shouts at it, threatening to hit it with the bat.
All of a sudden, the chittering stops and the creature begins to retreat from the bus. I look at Steve and grab the back of his jacket as he heads to the door to open it and see if they have all gone. "What happened?" Lucas asks everyone.
"Steve scared them off?" Dustin suggests, almost like Steve is some kind of God. I mean, Steve is cool and all, but let's keep in mind the fact he's never won a fight before.
Steve looks out into the distance, with the bat resting on his left shoulder. "No," he disagrees with Dustin, shaking his head. He turns back around to face us all. "They're going somewhere."
