iii.
Halloween. A time for dressing up and knocking on stranger's doors begging for candy. You collect all the candy you bag in the one night and stuff your face until you can't move. That of course, is until high school. Instead of all the former, you party, get drunk, take drugs, sleep with someone. Or as Tina put it, 'get sheet faced'.
After school, I head towards the buses, where I am stopped by none other than Billy Hargrove. "What do you want?" I sigh, pulling my arm from his grip.
"I want a lot of things, but it's probably not appropriate for the school grounds," he replies, biting his bottom lip. I scoff, walking away again. "Oh my God, chill out, I was joking. I was going to offer you a ride."
I turn on my heel and head back towards Billy. He smirks, putting his arm around me. "Get off," I shake him off and stand by his car. "I have been to enough parties to know what you're doing." He raises his brow for elaboration. "You're going to try and flirt with me and I'm supposed to fall for your charms so tonight you can sleep with me and hope to God you don't knock me up."
He pauses, leaning against his car and pulling out two cigarettes, handing one to me. "You're pretty smart, huh, Peterson," he tells me, lighting the cigarettes. I take a big puff before nodding my head. "Guess you'll just need more persuasion before you fall for my irresistible charm."
"Billy, I'm not having sex with you," I shake my head at him, still smoking the cigarette in between my middle and forefinger.
"We'll see about that," he smirks before Maxine walks past me and heads to the other side of the car. "You're late, again."
"Yeah, I had to get catch-up homework," she explains, rather quietly to him.
"Jesus," he scoffs, shaking his head. "I don't care. You're late again and you're skating home. Do you hear me?" He smokes his cigarette and Maxine gets in the car. "No, you're sitting in the back, Elizabeth is riding with us." She exhales sharply before climbing over. Billy takes one more puff of his cigarette before tossing it on the floor. I do the same and get in the car.
Billy puts on his radio and starts driving. "God this place is such a shithole," Billy comments, taking in his surroundings. I haven't said anything since his outburst with Maxine and I don't intend on speaking to him until tonight when he's in a better mood.
"It's not that bad," Maxine tells him.
"No?" Billy asks her before rolling down my window, getting a whiff of manure. He inhales sharply before holding his noses. "Mmmmm, you smell that, Max? That's actually shit. Cow shit."
"I don't see any cows," she replies, leaning forward and pressing the button to roll up my window.
"Clearly, you haven't met the high-school girls," he laughs to himself, gesturing to me. I know he's only doing it to get a reaction out of me, so I ignore him. "So what, you like it here now?"
"No," she mutters, shaking her head.
"Then why are you defending it?" Billy argues with her, still being a complete asshole.
"I'm not," she replies, leaning forward again.
"Sure sounds like it," Billy mutters, keeping his eyes on the road. His knuckles are white from gripping onto the steering wheel so hard.
"It's just we're stuck here so..." she trails off, trying to defend herself.
"Hmm," Billy hums, nodding his head. "You're right. We're stuck here. And whose fault is that?" He asks her, looking up at her in the mirror.
"Yours," she mumbles under her breath, so Billy can't hear her.
"What did you say?" Billy snaps at her, anger filling the car.
"Nothing," Maxine says quickly before sitting back in her seat, knowing she's fucked up.
"Did you say it's my fault?" He angrily questions her and she shakes her head, denying it. "You know whose fault it is. Say it." The car radio is the only thing filling in the silence. "Max," he says in a sing-song voice, his voice deep and husky. "Say it." She stills stays silent in the back so he turns around rapidly. "Say it!" He screams at her before turning back to driving. I flinch at the sudden outburst and I just can't wait to get out of the car.
She still ignores him so he pushes his foot down harder on the gas, making the car go speeding down the road. He turns up the volume of the radio so it starts to hurt my ears. He dramatically taps the steering wheel along to the tune, biting his bottom lip. Maxine leans forward, slightly, noticing three people riding bikes.
"Oh, these your new hick friends?" Bill questions her, pointing to them.
"No, I don't know them," she shakes her head, worry filling her eyes.
"I guess you won't care if I hit 'em then, huh?" He threatens. I ignore him, knowing he won't go through with it. Tommy used to say things like that all the time and always back out. "I get bonus points if I get 'em all in one go?"
"No, Billy, stop!" Maxine pleads, kicking his seat. "It's not funny!" Billy ignores her, putting his foot down on the gas. As we get closer to the three people, I recognize them to be Lucas, Mike, and Dustin. "Billy, come on, stop it! It's not funny. Stop!"
He doesn't slow down so I try to intervene. "Billy, you need to calm down," I tell him. He turns to me and scoffs, revving his engine. We get right behind them and I panic. "Billy!" I grab the steering wheel and swerve us out of the way. Maxine sighs in relief and Billy snaps again.
"Yeah!" He yells turning to look in the back seats. "That was a close one, huh?!" He continues yelling. Billy starts laughing and I exhale sharply, crossing my arms over my chest. It's not long before we pull up in Billy's drive and we all get out of the car, without saying anything. Maxine rushes inside and I begin to walk to the door. "7 o'clock, sharp," Billy calls, making me stop dead in my tracks.
"You just nearly killed three kids, Billy!" I shout at him. "You're a psycho, I'm not getting in that car with you, ever again. I'd rather take the stupid bus than get in that death trap with you. So on second thoughts, I'll find someone else to take me to this stupid party."
I turn to walk away again, but Billy has none of it. "It was a freaking joke!" He tries to defend himself. "Why are you being such a bitch, Peterson."
"Billy," I say, calmly, turning around to face him. "Go fuck yourself, no one else wants to." I head back in the direction of my house. "And get a life while you're at it!"
Billy Hargrove is a nasty piece of work and I don't want anything to do with him.
