Chapter 3
"The Knights of the Flaming Circle?"
"Maddie, what is this?"
Maddie turned on the lights to show this was connected to one of several underground bunkers.
"These tunnels are connected to different aspects of Springfield, but people kept them hidden from years."
"Hold on, people were saying for years that it was just a rumor, weren't cops using the buildings as a cover for catching criminals?"
Hakeem shook his head at Sonia's claims. "Wasn't it that the ghosts of someone at a Sears bathrooms echoing from the grave warning people to stay away?"
Maddie couldn't help but chuckle.
"I may or may not have helped spread those rumors around a bit to make sure people wouldn't come down here. Unfortunately, some people take rumors a bit too seriously," showing them new reports.
"Uh, Foreigners & Haitians Out? Mass deportation? Forced immigration? What the hell?"
"The Klan are actually sending out recruitment photos in our home, this can't be real!"
"What's worse, it looks like they ripped off our menus."
The three of them took a break from the horror in their lives to laugh at her claim and their shoddy craftmanship.
"Couldn't we just use the number to find out where they are and send the police to come after their group?"
"Tried. It's an automated message telling you to request an application through their PO Box."
"So they've got a means to hide their tracks? The only thing worse than a racist is a smart racist."
"What does this have to do with these Knights?"
"Here," handing him a article, which he read.
"Niles, Ohio? Rioting between Klan and anti-klan factions was averated only by the intervention of," skipping, "Sheriff, at home at Ohitown. Klasmen went to the home of, Catholic, and set up a blazing cross in his yard."
Sonia sucked her teeth. "They've been spreading hate up here a hundred years ago?"
"Seems like he," continuing to read. "Members of the Knights of the Flaming Circle turned out and in reprisal set up a burning circle. As the two factions milled about disorder seemed imminent, and a call was sent to Niles for police protection."
"So they fought back to protect someone targeted for being a different religion?"
"Yep, know about the Klan burning crosses. The Flaming Circle mocked them by burning a tire, especially in the houses of anyone with potential clan ties."
"So every time the Klueless psychos went after an innocent person, they fought back."
"And each time, the Klan couldn't fake their community support group bs-activism when their rallies turned into violent battles. The more people fought back, the more people split up: some couldn't handle it, others couldn't. And then...the election march occurred."
The way her eyes lit up made both kids of Haitian descent shudder.
"What happened?
"The Klan was going after Catholic influence in the school, with the mayor and police backing them up for a march. The Knights bombed their their houses and made roadblocks to stop them from entering the town."
"They still tried to show up?"
"Well the mayor recruited Klansmen to fight but the Knighs fought so hard the National Guard had to be called in. They stopped the march and most of the racists quit."
Hakeem and Sonia gulped.
"Holy crap."
