Chapter 2
Hakeem spent the Saturday wondering what to expect. Springfield was turning into a town of police sirens and police watch.
One night he was going to sleep when he overheard his mom getting calls and asking the person on the phone to calm down.
He snuck out into the living room. One of his classmate's neighbors had their car windows attacked.
"Oh crap, they're already here?!"
Hayley Aesop turned back to him with shock. "Just go to bed, we'll be okay. She's okay. We'll talk about this in the morning," listening to cars rushing on the tv.
He went to bed. They were just getting used to junior year when this was happening. He stumbled around in his sleep, stuck screaming for Sonia and Maddie as they were hunted down, reaching for her mother as gas and bullets fell through.
He woke up in the middle of the night with sweat dripping down his face. Something had to be done.
Eating breakfast with his mom didn't help matters, as she was getting calls.
"Yeah, schools might have to get canceled for a bit. You're thinking of leaving town? Yeah, yeah, I get it. Just be careful, alright?"
She sighed. "Apparently someone had acid thrown on their windows."
"You don't think it was one of our neighbors, do you?"
"Maybe some people snuck into the town between last night and the morning?"
"Probably. Maybe you shouldn't go out."
"Wait, I'm meeting up with Sonia and Maddie tomorrow."
"Fine, but don't get separated. There's pepper spray in the pantry closet just in case."
Sonia came by later.
"The first thing we need to do is find the POS who caused this bs to start with."
"We can't target a former president, we'll get arrested!"
"As long as we don't miss," she muttered under her breath. "But no, I mean the person who made the post. The Canton chick's in prison so we can't talk to her."
"So you want to find the person who posted the rumor?"
He googled it. "Look, she already confessed in an interview."
"That's not enough: people want to see the genuine article. We haven't even gone to Haiti, just some of our parents and grandpapis. If they won't go after us, they'll go after our parents," sobbing. "I can't let them die, none of us did anything wrong!"
"Hey, hey," hugging her. "We'll be okay," patting her while she cried on her shoulder.
"Let's go meet up with Maddie. We'll take it one step at a time."
They got her coordinates into one of few abandoned buildings downtown, rightfully anxious.
"What the?"
"I knew the city was remodeled in some places, but I had no idea this wasn't renovated yet."
"Down here!"
She called them over and opened up a manhole cover, complete with a sewer ladder.
They climbed down to meet her, forced to use their lights to navigate through the tunnels until arriving at the locale, following her into a room with ventilation, a fridge, several memorabilia plastered around the walls, almost like an underground bunker that was once abandoned.
"Maddie, what is this place?"
She smirked.
"The meeting ground of the Knights of the Flaming Circle!"
