#37: Can't Help Falling In Love
"Sophie, do you know how to play a guitar?" Keefe asked. He was laying on her bed, playing with her hair, while she was reading a book.
"Yeah, I played a few times. Why?" Sophie asked.
"Well, I was watching this human movie with Dex, and I saw someone playing this guitar looking thing, but it was smaller, and had a different sound" Keefe said. Sophie smiled behind her book.
"That's called a ukulele, and they're very popular in Hawaii. I used to have one when I was little, and my parents were blown away by how easily I learned songs when I was seven" Sophie said. Keefe looked fascinated, and it made Sophie want to find her old ukulele in Mysterium.
"If it was still in your old house when you left, maybe we could go find it and you can teach me a few songs?" Keefe said, a twinkle in his wide, bright eyes. Sophie smiled, and nodded. They ran down the stairs, Keefe chasing Sophie, both of them laughing the entire way. She sought refuge in the couch, and jumped on, with Keefe jumping on right after. Sophie laughed so hard, she fell off the couch, and received a kiss from Keefe as an apology. Soon after they calmed down, Sophie hailed Councillor Oralie and asked if she could take them to Mysterium. She happily agreed, and showed up at Havenfield minutes later to escort them. They linked hands, and leaped to the crowded city.
"Wow, it's a lot different here than when I last went" Sophie said, and Oralie gave a small, sad smile.
"Yes, things have definitely changed in our world since the Neverseen debacle. The gnomes are still letting the city recover from their absence, but didn't want to do it unnaturally, so they're guiding the plants, instead of doing it themselves" Oralie said. Sophie had to bite her lip to keep herself from crying. She thought about Calla, and how proud she would have been that the gnomes now are letting things grow naturally. She shoved the thought out of her mind, because she would inevitably cry at her old house. She hadn't been there in almost a year, and she knew it wouldn't have changed. There was a long silence, and Sophie assumed Oralie and Keefe were having the same thoughts about Calla. She deserved a moment of silence, so Sophie didn't talk until they got there.
"Wow, the house hasn't changed at all" Keefe said. He'd been to the real version in the Forbidden Cities, multiple times, and that one had been abandoned, so they rebuilt it in the Lost Cities. Sophie wished she could spend the night in the house for just one day, but they most likely wouldn't let her.
Keefe held her hand, and they walked into the house. Sophie half expected to find her mom yelling at her, asking where she'd been and why she skipped class again, not knowing her daughter is an elf. But, when they walked in, they only found silence, and it was eerie. She ran up to her bedroom, and looked around for the small ukulele. It would probably be too small for her now, but she could still play it.
"It doesn't seem to be in here. Let me check the attic" Sophie said. She ran down the hallway, peeking into her sister's room on the way, wishing she would see her sitting on the bed, texting someone on her cell phone. When she got to the end of the hallway, she grabbed a knob hanging from the ceiling, and pulled it down to reveal a ladder, and a room. She climbed up the ladder, and found herself in a shrine of her childhood. There was a box labeled "Sophie's Things" and she went there first. She peeled the tape, and opened the box slowly.
"Hey, you okay up there, Foster?" Keefe asked from down below.
"I'm fine!" Sophie yelled down. She peered inside the box, and found some of her old toys. Barbie dolls, a stuffed TARDIS with a face on it that her dad had made for her, among other things. She dug around for a bit, until her finger hit something made of plastic, and made an out of tune sound. She pulled it out, and decided to bring the TARDIS plushie with her. Something to have, from her old family. She climbed down the ladder, and Keefe helped steady her on her way down by holding onto her waist. Her heart sped into hummingbird mode, and her foot slipped, having her land on top of Keefe. He had tried to catch her, but failed. He laughed, and it calmed Sophie's nerves. Soon, she was laughing along with him, both laying on the floor. They knew Oralie was downstairs listening, but they didn't care.
After they'd finished laughing, they closed the attic door, and went back downstairs where Oralie was waiting for them. She had a smile on her face, like one that Edaline would give Sophie whenever she caught her and Keefe being cute together. It was only slightly embarrassing at this point, but even more so because she knew Oralie was royalty.
"Ready to go back to Havenfield?" Oralie asked. Sophie nodded, then held onto Keefe's hand, as Oralie took her other. She took out her pathfinder and adjusted the crystal, then held it up to the light, and they glittered away. When they reformed, they were standing in the living room of Havenfield. They thanked Oralie, and, after she left, went up to Sophie's room.
"Okay, let's see if I can tune this" Sophie said. She plucked each string, remembering which string was supposed to make which noise, and twisting the knobs to make them correct. She went string by string, and after she was done, it sounded beautiful. It was small, but still playable. She put her fingers on the strings, and tried to remember the chords. She started strumming, knowing what song she wanted to play. It was Can't Help Falling In Love, by Elvis Presley, and It was one of her favourite songs to play when she was little. She strummed, and sang, closing her eyes and thinking of times with Keefe. She poured her heart into her singing. When she was finished, she opened her eyes, and saw Keefe looking at her intently, his mouth open, and in a small smile. She'd never sang in front of him, or anyone for that matter.
"You're really good at singing, you know that?" Keefe said. He gave her a kiss, and it felt longer, more passionate, than usual.
"Thanks" She said.
"I love you" Keefe said. It was the first time he'd said it to her.
"I love you, too" Sophie said, and she kissed him again. She really meant it, and she knew everything was about to change for the better.
