#33: Splotching
"Okay, everyone get in pairs!" The coach said. Sophie immediately paired up with Dex, Fitz with Keefe, and Biana with Marella, despite how much she hated her in level two. To be fair, she hated Sophie at first too, but that changed. Now they were best friends.
The coach threw colourful paint balls at them, the kids held them between each other with their minds.
"I already know you're gonna win, I don't know why I try anymore" Dex said. Sophie smiled.
"You'll win one of these days, Dex. Maybe you just shouldn't pair up with me" Sophie said, still grinning. She looked over at Fitz and Keefe, both with smirks on their faces, though one looked better than the other. More professional and practiced.
"On your mark" the coach said. Sophie got into position.
"Get set, splotch!" Coach yelled. Dex thrust his arms out, while Sophie did nothing. The yellow splotched they had chosen was now smeared across Sophie's face. Dex looked at her with a surprised look, his mouth open, then replaced it with a grin.
Sophie had let him win. She thought Dex deserves a bit of a chance. Once he got past Sophie, he'd do better against others.
"Okay, losers to the wall, winners progress" coach said. She walked over to Dex and looked at him.
"Looks like someone finally beat Sophie Foster! Good job, Dex" she said. Sophie smiled at him, and walked over to the rainbow prodigies. She sat against the wall, and watched Dex play. From across the wall, she saw Keefe, with lime green hair. She laughed a bit, and went back to watching. Then she felt someone on her shoulder.
"So, you lost the game for Dex? You're a nicer person than you seem to be" Keefe said. Sophie looked at him and shrugged.
"I can be nice when I want to. But most of the time I don't want to" Sophie said with a grin.
"Hey, can you do me a favour and let me win next time? I'm sure that I'd get pretty far if I wasn't against the Fitzter every time" Keefe said. Sophie gave her best attempt at a smirk, and put her head in her hands.
"Aw, c'mon. You wouldn't want to make your boyfriend mad" he said, planting a kiss on her lips. Sophie was so intoxicated by the kiss that she agreed on accident. Keefe pulled away and grinned again.
"Thanks, you're the best girlfriend ever" he said as he kissed her again. He sat down next to her, and she put her head on his shoulder while they watched the rest of the prodigies. Dex had gotten out his second round, and Fitz was going strong. Biana was still in, but she looked tired. The game went on, until it was only Fitz and a level six named Gimur. Fitz won the match easily, and gained his detention pass, not that he'd need it. Sophie usually shared hers with Keefe, because she never seemed to run out, and he always seemed to need them.
"Winner is Fitz Vacker!" Coach announced. Sophie, Keefe, Dex, and Biana all ran over to him and gave him a big hug. When they pulled away, Keefe's arms were around Sophie's waist, and he was hugging her from behind. Sophie was grinning, looking at Fitz with his pardon from all punishment, and transmitted.
Congratulations.
Thanks. I know you botched your game on purpose.
I was hoping it wouldn't be noticeable.
"Hey, no flirting with my girlfriend" Keefe said. Sophie turned her head and kissed him.
"Don't worry, you're the only person I flirt with" she said. Keefe kissed her back, and everyone else awed.
"Aw come on, there's more where that came from" Keefe said. Sophie grinned again, and this was the most she's smiled in a while. Keefe made her happy, and she liked that. She liked being happy rather than depressed and worried all the time.
