Nothing Left
That last chapter was actually hard to write, in terms of events, not actually difficult to write. Having Drake become a slave for the Schnee's was a decision that I had come to for quite a while now and I also felt that he was the best choice to show things from Weiss's side of the story. And if you know what happens next from Weiss's point of view, then you might be able to guess where things will go. Now we'll change things up again and head back to our main group. This is gonna be another chapter that's gonna be hard for me to write. You should just be glad that you only have to read it. Enjoy!
-Point of View: Amber-
The next day came around and the five of us were getting super close to the village I'm from, Shion. We would be there probably within the next five minutes. "Ok... let's see... the next village is..." Ruby began to say as she was struggling to read the map. We managed to find it deep inside Nora's backpack late last night. "I think we might be lost, guys." Ruby said as I just rolled my eyes. "We're not lost. Shion village is just up ahead. I think someone from there would know where they're going." I said as Ruby just let out a small chuckle. "Right, I forgot you were from this continent. It's very nice out here." Ruby said as I thanked her. "Me and my family actually used to visit the area around here sometimes." Jaune said as Ruby looked at him curiously. "Oh yeah, don't you have like, 4 sisters or something?" Ruby asked him. "Uh... seven." Jaune said which made me giggle a bit. "Y'know, that actually explains a lot." Nora said. "Wait, what do you mean-" Jaune began to ask but Ruby cut him off and said "So what did you guys do out there?" Jaune then walked next to Ruby and me and pointed to different locations on the map. "We did all sorts of stuff! Over here is a nice hiking trail, and over here is where we went camping all the time. I got my own tent because I was special. And also so my sisters would stop braiding my hair." Jaune explained as I chuckled a bit more. "Didn't like the look?" I asked him. "Yeah, they just kept doing pig tails, but personally i'm more of a "Warrior's Wolf Tail" kind of guy." Jaune explained as he stroked back his hair. "That's just a ponytail though." Ruby said. "I stand by what I said." Jaune said, looking confident.
The three of us kept looking at the map, but what we didn't realize was that Ren and Nora had just stopped walking. "Uh... guys?" Nora said as we all turned to face her. She was pointing forward so we all looked to what she was pointing at. My heart dropped and shattered on the ground because what we saw was Shion village completely destroyed. Buildings were either up in smoke or demolished. No sounds could be heard from the village, meaning there was a high chance no one survived this. "No... No... NOOOOOO! Not here! It can't be all gone!" I said as I sprinted forward into the village. My friends tried to follow me but I was too quick and I lost them. I ran through the village and rounded the familiar corners until I found what I was looking for. My home that I grew up in was in pieces. It looked like it burned to the ground. And in front of the pile of charred wood were two corpses. My parents laid before me.... dead. "No... Why... Why must... these things happen?" I said, tears rolling down my eyes. I fell to my knees and crawled over to my parents bodies. I held my mother in my hands and I cried into her lifeless body. "Why did this... have to happen? Why... Why... WHY!? WHY MUST ALL THESE THINGS HAPPEN TO US!!?? IT'S NOT FAIR!! JUST STOP! STOP! I WANT IT TO STOP!! ... stop.... stop..." I said as I felt a hand touch my right shoulder. I looked around and saw Ruby and everyone else standing there. "We're... so... so sorry for you, Amber." Ruby said as she crouched down and hugged me. I cried into her shoulder and I could hear Ruby doing the same. "Why does everything I care about have to leave me...?" I said quietly as Ruby let go of me. "Not everything has left you. We're still here... and we'll be with you... always." Ruby said to me as she helped me back to my feet. "We're sorry, Amber. But we should look for other survivors. Maybe there's someone in this village who can tell us what happened." Jaune said as I gave him a slow nod. The five of us began to walk away from what used to be my childhood home, and as we left, I gave one last look at the person who cared most about me for my whole life... my mother.
We continued to search through the town for quite a while. We looked through many buildings that were still standing but the results was the same as my home, no survivors. Eventually we came to the centre of the village. There were several dead bodies laying in the square and seeing each of them made my dread grow even more. Most of the people I saw dead were people I used to know from when I was a kid growing up in this village. "Over there!" Ren said as he had walked ahead of the rest of us. He was running towards someone who was sitting up against a broken concrete wall. We all ran for the person and we could see he was still breathing. It was a huntsman, and he had a deep wound on his left side. "What happened?" Jaune asked him. The huntsman coughed up some blood and then said "Bandits.... The whole tribe... And then, with all the panic..." The huntsman began to say before coughing some more. "Grimm." Ren said, finishing off what the huntsman was going to say. The huntsman gave him a nod, indicating he was right. Ren walked past the huntsman to take in all the stress and the rest of us turned away to think of something to do. "Alright, we can get him to the next village and try to find a doctor there." Ruby said as we all agreed with her. "Yeah, Ren and I can take turns carrying him." Jaune said. "I don't know if he'll make it." Nora said, sounding very concerned. "He will. He has to." Jaune said. "If we get going now, his chances will be better. Me and Ruby can run ahead and look for help." I suggested as Ren suddenly called for our attention. We all turned to face him and we looked at the huntsman. He was slumped over and he wasn't breathing anymore. The huntsman had died. No one said any words. We all just put our heads down and carried sad and shocked looks on our faces. "Should we... bury him?" Nora asked as Ren walked past us all. "We should go. It's not safe here." Ren said as Nora walked after him. I looked to Jaune and Ruby and saw they were both frustrated. "It'll be okay." Ruby said as she held Jaune's right arm. "I'm just tired of losing everything." Jaune said as he now walked away. I then looked at Ruby and she looked at me. "Come on. We should get going too. It'll be dark soon and we don't wanna run into any of those Grimm." I said as we both went after everyone else.
A few hours later, we had found camp and were all resting. Jaune was taking first watch for us while we slept. I couldn't get any sleep though because of everything that happened today. I stayed awake for most of the night, just staring up at the stars and the fireflies buzzing around. "Why can't all this just stop?" I thought to myself as I saw Ruby wake up. She let out a quick gasp so I quickly rushed over to her to see if she was alright. "Are you okay?" I asked her. "I'm fine. Just a bad dream." Ruby said as she started to look around. "Where's Jaune?" She asked me as I turned around to look. Jaune wasn't here anymore. "I don't know. I was awake this whole time and I didn't see him leave." I explained to Ruby as we both started to hear something in the distance. "...Jaune... Start from... beginning.... Follow... instructions..." We could hear as we both got up. "Does that voice sound familiar?" Ruby asked me as I gave her a nod. The voice sounded like Pyrrha. We both began to walk through the woods and over to where Pyrrha's voice was coming from.
We walked for about a minute or so before we found what we were looking for. We could see Jaune, training with his weapons and a video of Pyrrha on his scroll. Me and Ruby hid behind a tree to observe and so we didn't disturb Jaune. "Ok Jaune, just like we practiced. Follow these instructions. Shield up..." Pyrrha said on the recording as Jaune did as she said. "Keep your grip tight. Don't forget to keep your front foot forward. Ready? Go!" Pyrrha said as Jaune thrusted his sword forward. "Again!" Pyrrha said as Jaune then went for a side slash from the left. "And again." Pyrrha said as Jaune went for an overhead diagonal slash from the right. He was panting very hard, meaning he had been doing this for quite a while. And... because of the emotions that were coursing through him, listening to Pyrrha. For all we knew, this was the only memory he had left of her. "Ok! Now, assuming you weren't cheating... we can take a break." Pyrrha said as Jaune lowered his weapons and slowed his panting. "I know this can be frustrating. And it can feel like so much effort to progress such a small amount. But... I want you to know that i'm proud of you." Pyrrha said as I saw someone else appear on the recording. I nearly started crying when I saw who it was. "That we're proud of you. We've never met someone so determined to better themself. You've grown quite a lot since we started training." Drake said as I remembered he also helped out Jaune during he beginning of our days at Beacon. "And we know this is just the beginning." Pyrrha said encouragingly as Drake walked off the screen. Pyrrha then turned her head away from Jaune, looking concerned about something. "Jaune... I... I... I want you to know that I am just happy to be a part of your life. I'll always be here for you, Jaune." Pyrrha said as the recording began to rewind. It went all the way back to the start and Jaune took his positions again. "We should go. If we interrupted him, it might just make things worse." Ruby said as I agreed with her. We both left quietly, leaving Jaune alone to train.
We went back to our camp and sat down next to the fire while Ren and Nora slept. "Those people... the ones we found you by in Shion... They were your parents... weren't they?" Ruby asked me as I gave her a nod. "Yes. My father I didn't really care about... he abused me and beat me for most of my life. But my mother... up until recently, she was the only person to care for me. She taught me everything I've come to know about being a huntress until I went to huntsman primary school. She was the only person I could talk to until I met all of you." I explained as Ruby scooched over to me. "I'm sorry for everything. Not just for losing your village and family... but for everything that's happened in your life. You've had it worse than most of us... and if there was anything I could do to make it better, then I would do it." Ruby said as I hugged her again. "You already have." I said as I started to cry into her shoulder again. And before long, the sun began to rise and everyone else woke up. Jaune came back but we didn't ask him anything about what he was doing. We all simply packed up our supplies and headed off to the next village. I just hoped that things would be better at our next stop and not like Shion village.
