First Real Mission
Well, I didn't expect to write Temair's backstory for that long. But I feel it came out pretty good. In terms of all the members of DLTA, he was definitely the one who's had the least action, so I figured the last chapter could revolve around him instead of Drake. It was interesting trying to figure out some sort of interesting way he used his weapon but I feel I was effective, having him use it with a mix of his Semblance and Dust. And now, we'll be starting the finale portion of volume 2. The extracurricular missions will begin and things will get pretty intense. Just wait 'til you see what I have planned! Enjoy!
-Point of View: Drake-
The day after the dance ended, we were all set to begin our first extracurricular missions. Temair filled each of us in on what he and Ruby went through last night. He and Ruby were also called up to see Professor Ozpin this morning, and my guess was he wanted to try and get as much info out of them as possible about this intruder. "I can't believe someone was bold enough to break into the CCT, especially since it was being heavily guarded at the time." Leena said as I agreed with her. "As far as anyone could tell, they weren't able to do anything to the CCT in any way. So, even though the intruder was able to knock out the guards, it looks like Temair and Ruby were able to stop whatever it was that they were doing." I said as Amber and Leena nodded in agreement. Temair then entered into our room and let out a big sigh. "So how did it go? Was Ozpin at least nicer than Ironwood?" I asked Temair. "The professor was very understanding. Neither me or Ruby will receive any sort of punishment. We both answered his questions as best as we could and then that was it. He just let us go. Although... Ruby did put in a mention of something potentially happening in the southeast of Vale. I was wondering if you could possibly fill me in on what that might mean, Drake?" Temair asked me. "Well, it looks like you figured out what we were able to find a few days ago. The White Fang and Torchwick have something planned in that general location. We're not exactly sure what it is, but knowing Torchwick, it can't be any good. And if you all really know me, then..." I began to say but Leena cut in. "You want us to go on a mission that's in the southeast so we can investigate, right? Is that what you're getting at?" Leena asked me as I let out a small chuckle. "You know me too well. And, i'm sure we won't be the only ones trying to get a mission in that location. I wouldn't be surprised if team RWBY heads out there too." I said as everyone agreed with me. We were about to continue with our conversation but we were interrupted by the P.A system. Glynda was speaking into it. "Will all first year students please report to the amphitheater." She said as the P.A system cut out. "Well, I guess we'll figure everything out when we go to choose a mission. Let's head out." I said as we left our room, meeting up with team RWBY who walked with us to Beacon's amphitheater.
When we arrived, students were directed to stand in groups that represented which academy they were attending. We all went to the Beacon group and waited to hear what Professor Ozpin had to say. He appeared on the stage in front of us all and cleared his throat before speaking into the microphone. "Today, we stand together, united. Mistral, Atlas, Vacuo, Vale, the four kingdoms of Remnant. On this day nearly eighty years ago, the largest war in recorded history came to an end. It was a war of ignorance, of greed, and of oppression. A war that was about much more than where borders fell or who traded with whom. But about the very idea of individualism itself. We fought for countless reason, one of which being the destruction of all forms of art and self expression. And as you are all well aware that was something many could not stand for. As a result, those who opposed this tyranny began naming their children after one of the core aspects of art itself. Colour." Professor Ozpin said to all of us as I looked to Ruby. She was a clear example since she's literally named after the Ruby red colour itself. I then turned my focus back to Ozpin to hear what else he had to say. "It was their way to demonstrate that not only would they refuse to tolerate this oppression, but neither would the generations to come. And it was a trend that is held to this very day. We encourage individuality, expressionism, and unity. Through diversity. As I have said, today we stand together, united. But this bind cannot exist without effort. Which is why today while the rest of the world celebrates peace, Huntsmen and Huntresses will work to uphold it. As first year students, you will be tasked with shadowing a professional Huntsman or Huntress on a mission. Some of you may be taken out of the kingdom for several days. Others may work within the walls for the rest of the week. But no matter which path you choose, remember to be safe, remember your training, and remember to do your very best." Professor Ozpin said as he took his leave. Everyone clapped for him as multiple screens appeared around the amphitheater. They all listed different missions we could sign up for. "Is everyone here all for trying to find a mission in the southeast of Vale?" I asked my teammates as they all gave me nods. "Perfect. Let's see what's being offered. Let's look at Search and Destroy and Search and Rescue first." I said as me and my team headed over to those missions.
Whether it was a coincidence or not, we met team RWBY at the same station. "Let me guess, you're all trying to get a mission in the southeast too?" Leena asked them. "Yep. We're too concerned with what's been going on so we want to head out there and put a stop to Torchwick and the White Fang." Yang said as she cracked her knuckles. I watched as Ruby entered her teams name into the Search and Destroy mission post. However, they were declined. Apparently, the job was too dangerous for first year teams. "Well that puts a hole in all our plans." I said as I started to shake my hair. But then, Professor Ozpin appeared behind us, looking curiously at the job board and then at all of us. "Unfortunately, we determined that the concentration of Grimm was too extreme for first year students. It seems that particular region is rather popular. In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that both of your teams will make your way there no matter which job you choose." Ozpin said as he looked right at Ruby. "Whatever makes you say that?" Ruby said in a tone that clearly gave away our whole plan. "I'm still curious as to how most of you found yourselves at the docks last semester. I'm interested to know how you really learned of a "hideout" in the southeast. And I certainly wonder why witnesses reported seeing robots and rose petals in a dance club sometime ago." Ozpin said to all of us as a worrying feeling grew over me. "Well shit. He knows about everything we've done. He's just gonna shut us down and keep us away from our objective." I thought as Professor Ozpin let out a sigh. "I doubt I'll ever find the exact answers i'm looking for. So, how about this. Instead of waiting for you all to break the rules, why don't we just bend them? After all, the job you were all interested in says it's too extreme for one first year team. I'm sure we could allow two to go. Strength in numbers is key in this situation." Ozpin said as he took out a tablet. He scrolled through it and entered something on the screen. On the board with the job we were looking at, both of our team names appeared. "We won't let you down, sir." I said as I bowed to him. "Thank you, professor." Ruby said as she followed my lead and bowed as well. "Do not thank me for this. Teamwork and persistence have carried you all far, but you must understand, the things that await you beyond the protection of the kingdom will not care. Stay close to your huntsman at all times. And do exactly as he says. He will be leading you on this mission. And he can have you sent back to Beacon, if he finds your skills to be unsatisfactory. I wish you all good luck." Professor Ozpin explained to us as he left.
We all left the amphitheater shortly after, grabbing our weapons and supplies before heading out to meet the Huntsman we'd be working with. Our job claimed we would be leaving today so we had to be quick. The eight of us met at the entrance to Beacon and then headed to where we'd meet this Huntsman. "That wasn't exactly uplifting, what Professor Ozpin said." Yang said as we all agreed. "It is the truth though." Temair said. "It's gonna be tough but I know we can all do it. And besides, it's not just us out there. We'll be fighting alongside a genuine Huntsman!" Ruby cheered as we arrived at the airship which would take us to our destination. And... it was at that moment when all of our hearts dropped and shattered on the ground. The Huntsman we would all be going out on this mission with was Prof- er, I mean Doctor Oobleck. He was clad in a trench coat and an explorers hat, raring to go. "Why, hello everyone! Who's ready to fight for their lives!?" He asked us as we all just looked very confused. "Professor Oobleck?" Weiss questioned. "You all will not be needing your bags and supplies. Seeing as you've opted to shadow a Huntsman on what is now essentially a reconnaissance mission. I can assure you we will not be establishing a single base of operations. Rather we will be traversing several miles of hazardous wasteland, and making camp at any defendable locations we may stumble upon. I've packed all our essentials myself, provided the air course, and readied the airship. And that's Doctor Oobleck! I didn't earn a PhD for fun thank you very much." Oobleck said to us all as we were just left speechless. "Come now children, according to my schedule we are already 3 minutes behind... um... schedule!" Oobleck said to us as he bolted into the airship. We quickly dropped off our supplies, keeping only our weapons on us. We then entered the airship and took off, heading to our destination in the southeast of Vale.
-Time Skip: 2 Hours-
We were nearing our mission location. The area was known as "Mountain Glenn." It was meant to be an expansion of Vale but in the end it was overrun by Grimm. Vale then fenced off the area from the main cities so no Grimm could advance. When it came into view, we all saw a huge, abandoned city, filled with broken buildings and piles of rubble everywhere. It was kinda sad, actually. Our pilot found a suitable spot to land and we all exited the airship, each of us, except for Doctor Oobleck, pulling out our weapons just in case there were Grimm around. The airship then took off and our mission had begun. "Ladies, Gentlemen, you may still be students, but as of this moment your first mission as Huntsmen and Huntresses has officially started. From this point forward you need to do exactly as I say. Do you understand?" Oobleck asked us as he took a sip from the thermos he was carrying with him. We all gave him a nod and then he looked directly at Ruby. "Ms. Rose! I thought I told you to leave all your bags at school!" He said to her as I looked over. Ruby was wearing a backpack on her... well back. I guess we didn't really notice since we were more concerned with the actual mission we just started. "But, uh, you hadn't told us to listen to you yet... So I didn't." Ruby tried to explain. "She's not wrong." I heard Oobleck say to himself. "Very well Ruby, leave your bag here, we can pick it up upon our return." Oobleck ordered her as it looked like Ruby was going to pull something out of her backpack. "But I wa-" Ruby tried to say but Oobleck cut in. "Young lady, what in the world could you possibly have in that bag that could be so important for you to bring it-" Oobleck tried to ask before something popped its head out of the backpack. It was a dog. "Get back in the bag." Ruby whispered to the dog but it just barked and licked her face. "We're here to investigate an abandoned urban jungle teeming with death and hostility and you brought, a dog?" Oobleck threateningly asked Ruby. "Well I, uhhh..." Ruby started to say as Oobleck grabbed the dog and held it in the air. "Genius! Canines are historically known for their perceptive nose and heightened sense of sound! Making them excellent companions for hunts such as ours!" Oobleck said as he started spinning with the dog. "I'm a genius for bringing Zwei." Ruby said, bragging to everyone else. I assumed Zwei was the dogs name.
"So, what are your orders, doctor?" Blake asked Oobleck as he stopped spinning and put Zwei on the ground. "Ah! Yes, straight to the chase! I like it! As you've been informed, the southeast area has been marked as a recent hot spot for Grimm activity. Now there are several possible explanations for this behavior. One of which being... Grimm." Oobleck explained to us as we all just grew confused. "Uh... what?" I said to him as I could see he was just staring past us all. "A creature of Grimm approximately 100 yards from us at this very moment." Oobleck said as we all turned around. There was a lone Beowolf walking down a road, sniffing the ground. We all pulled out our weapons again and we prepared to take it down. "No, stop. There are a number of reasons why Grimm would congregate in this particular area. The most likely of which would be their attraction to negativity. Sadness, envy, loneliness, hatred, all qualities that are likely held by our hidden group harboring ill intent." Oobleck explained as we lowered our weapons. "S-So... what d-do we do now?" Amber asked Oobleck. "We wait, we track, if the specimen leads us to its pack, that pack may subsequently lead us to our prey." He explained. "How long do we wait for?" Leena asked. "It's uncertain, hours, days, weeks, why lone Grimm have been known to stay isolated from the pack for months... And there's the pack!" Oobleck said as we all turned back around to see he was correct. Nearly a dozen more Beowolves had shown up. "And now they've seen us." Oobleck said as we all raised our weapons backup. "I take it tracking is out of the question now?" I asked the doctor as he gave me a nod. "An accurate assumption, yes." Oobleck said as the Grimm began to run at us. "What's the plan then?" Leena asked as she aimed down the sight of her weapon. "Show me what you're all capable of." Oobleck said to us as we each ran forward, ready to take down this pack of Grimm.
Leena was the only one to stay in place, kneeling down and shooting Grimm that got close. She was holding a perimeter for us while we held off the rest of the Grimm. Temair and Amber joined to take down two Grimm together. Temair filled one with bullets and Amber pulled the head off of the other by wrapping the chains from her weapons around the Grimm's neck, then using her semblance to rip its head off. Yang was rushing through three Grimm, taking them down with a single punch or two. Blake sliced a Grimm in half by its mid-section with one strike of her blade. Weiss used her weapon to swiftly freeze the Beowolves in her way. In one move, she beat them all. Ruby used her semblance to slice her way through three Beowolves at once, chopping them in half. I took on two at once, changing my weapon into its blade form. I threw my trident at one Beowolf, impaling it in the head. The second kept charging me and swung one of its claws at my head. I fell to my knees and slid along the ground, the claws going right over me. I quickly grabbed my weapon and pulled it out of the now dead Beowolf. I turn and I see the second Grimm coming back at me. I charge it as well as it brings back one of its claws for another attack. I ready my blade and we both go to slash each other at the same time. Our attacks met and I was able to slice off the entire claw with one swing. The Grimm wailed in pain as I thrusted my blade into its mouth and out the other side. The Grimm disappeared shortly after and that was that.
"Hey doc, I was actually looking forward to seeing a pro huntsman in action. Like fighting or at least helping us fight?" Yang somewhat angrily asked Oobleck. Oobleck himself was taking samples from the area, whether it was dirt on the ground or small plants poking out of the concrete. "Ah, but I am in action, scouring the ruins of this once great city for any signs of irregularity. Not every mission is filled with daring and heroism. Sometimes it's just a heightened form of extermination. Remember, this is a job and you all signed up for it. I do hope you understand that." Oobleck said to us. "Well yeah... O-Of course." Yang said, trying not to sound stupid. Sadly the doctor was right though. We can't expect every single mission to turn out the way we wanted. For now, we just had to accept what was given to us and keep pushing forward. Because what lied ahead of us was something that we weren't prepared for at all.
