Chapter Two
When I open my eyes again, I'm standing in the school cafeteria, except there is only one table in it.
"Choose." I jump as a voice speaks suddenly. "Choose what?" I yell, and then I see it.
Two baskets have appeared on the table. One holds a hunk of cheese, another a knife as long as my arm.
"Choose!" The voice yells again.
I don't want to choose. I don't.
"No!" I yell back at the voice, covering my ears. I hope I can't hear the voice, but it pounds inside my head.
"Very well."
The baskets disappear from the table, and I sigh. Am I free to go?
Of course not.
A giant dog appears in the corner, snarling at me.
I yelp. If there's one thing I never liked, it was dogs. They were too big, too wild for my taste.
I back away, slowly, but the dog steps forward with every step I take backward.
"Y-you're a good dog, aren't you?" I stutter. Maybe this test is to see if I am a coward. Maybe if I just walk up to the dog, it won't hurt me.
The last thing I want to do is step towards the dog, but I take a tentative step.
The dog doesn't move, but it keeps it's eyes on me.
I don't dare look it in the eye, but I shakily reach my hand out in front of me.
The dog tilts its head, probably confused about my sudden change of actions.
I slowly advance, and the dog stays put.
I get close enough to pat the top of its head, and, to my relief, the dog lets out a happy bark and licks my hand.
I smile. "You're not such a bad dog, are you?"
A little girl, dressed in all white, appears at the corner of the room.
"Puppy!" She squeals, and starts running toward the dog.
The dog snaps it's head in her direction, and I jump in front of it.
The dog growls at the little girl. "Easy, dog, easy." I say, and it stops growling.
"She's not going to hurt you." I say as gently as I can. I sound like the Amity, I think.
The little girl comes up behind me and taps my shoulder. "Can I pet puppy?" She asks me. I nod, and show her how to pet the dog.
She pats his head, and the dog barks happily and licks the little girl's face, making her giggle.
Suddenly, the room around me melts, the girl and the dog fading away into nothingness.
Suddenly, I'm on a Dauntless train that's rocking violently. I'm dressed completely in black.
I'm a Dauntless.
I look down the train, and I see Mitch at the end, dressed in Candor white and black, as usual.
But there's something wrong. He doesn't look like himself. For one, he's not smiling.
He's always smiling.
I walk towards him, stumbling a little on the shaky ground.
"Mitch!"
He turns and looks at me.
"Jenna, tell me the truth." He says.
I reach him. "Yeah?"
"Are you happy with Candor?"
My heart feels like it's lodged in my throat.
I want to say yes, I really do. But I would be lying.
This is the part of me that could, in no way, be Candor.
But I can't lie to Mitch.
"No. No I'm not."
He looks at the floor. "Thank you for your honesty."
The thing everyone is required to say after someone tells the truth.
He looks up at me. "Must be why you're Dauntless."
He fades away and I
Wake.
Up.
With.
Tears.
