Chapter Three
Mitch knew.
Mitch knew.
He trusted that I would choose Candor, and I feel like I've failed him.
I release the wires I was holding, and the Abnegation lady takes them, pursing her lips.
"That," she says. "Was odd. Excuse me."
Odd?
She exits the room, leaving me with around a bazillion questions.
What's wrong with my test?
Am I not cut out for any faction?
I'm not cut out for Candor, if I could so easily lie to Mitch all these years about loving Candor. But I told him the truth in the simulation. Maybe that will solve things.
Does he know in real life?
If he does, I'm done for. Absolutely done for.
The woman comes back into the room, and I sit up. I'm naturally curious, being from a long line of Candors.
Good at debates and naturally curious. The only two things I'm automatically Candor at.
"Ok, here's what you're going to do." The woman hurriedly speaks in a whisper.
"What's happe-"
"You're going to go home immediately. Tell your parents you were sick. Hopefully I can count on a Candor to lie."
"No, stop." I stop her, and she looks at me questioningly.
"What's going on? What were my test results?"
"Your results were inconclusive." The woman begins to explain. "The way the test works is that each new scene is designed to rule out one or more factions, isolating only one. In your case, only two have been ruled out."
I feel my mouth drop open.
"The two that have been ruled out were Abnegation and Erudite. In the first scene, you didn't choose anything, which should have led to both Amity and Dauntless being ruled out. However, you didn't run from the dog, which suggests Dauntless, but you didn't take the knife, which also suggests Dauntless.
"You saved the little girl by calming down the dog in a peaceful way, and was able to allow the dog to let the little girl pet him, which suggests Amity, but so does taking the cheese, which you didn't do. I had to alter the simulation to put you on the train.
"On the train, you told the truth to that boy, which is a Candor-oriented response. However, you waited quite a while to tell the truth. Not a Candor-oriented response." The woman sighs.
"Therefore, you have aptitude for three factions, Amity, Candor, and Dauntless. People who get this kind of result are called.....Divergent." She says the name slowly, as if just saying it is dangerous.
The woman grasps my shoulders. "Listen to me. You cannot tell anyone about your score."
"Yeah, we're not supposed to-" I try to say, but she cuts me off.
"No. I'm not talking about after the test, I'm talking about never. Being Divergent is extremely dangerous, you got it? I'm going to manually log you in as Candor. If anyone asks, you got Candor on your test, ok?"
I nod my head.
"Go home." She says. "It'll be alright. Choose wisely."
I leave out of a back door, and start walking through the crisp air.
It's my choice now, no matter what the test says.
Amity. Candor. Dauntless.
Divergent.
