Chapter One

I sat down in the cafeteria, wiping my sweaty palms on my black pants. It's time.

We're taking the aptitude test today.

Mitch sits down next to me, and a Candor boy named Jordan (A/N: Captain Sparklez).

Another Candor boy, I think his name was Tyler (the Brotato), sits down next to Jordan.

"So, what do you think is gonna be on this test?" Tyler asks, and I already know what's going to happen-debate time.

"Well, it's gotta test our mind control. Candor has an honest mind, Abnegation has a selfless mind, Erudite is plain smart, Amity has a peaceful mind, and Dauntless has a crazy mind." Mitch says, and I laugh at the Dauntless line.

"No way. It's gotta test our physical strength." Jordan argues.

"What about our responses to events?" I try. "I mean, each faction would react to the same scenario in different ways."

Candor debates are one of the only thing I'm good at in the faction.

Tyler nods. "I think I'm with Jenna on this one. It makes sense."

A woman from Abnegation starts calling the names of people who need to take the test. Two from Abnegation, two from Dauntless, two from Amity, and two from Erudite. "From Candor: Mitch Hughes and Jenna Nathens."

I smile. "Looks like we're going to figure out whose theory is correct."

"Tell us when you get back." Tyler smirks.

Mitch and I walk down the white hallways toward the ten aptitude test rooms.

I stand in front of six, and Mitch stands in front of number seven.

Mitch gives me a nervous smile. "Good luck."

"You too."

He opens the door and disappears. I gulp, and enter the room.

Inside is an Abnegation woman standing next to a gray dentist chair. The chair has wires running from it to a computer.

There's a lot of stuff I should be thinking about, but now there's one thing on my mind: do not sit in that chair.

The Abnegation woman gives me a small smile as I inch away from the chair. "I know, sweetie. But you have to."

She seems much more kind then most Abnegation, and I can't help but thinking she could have been Amity.

"Does is hurt?" I ask, sounding like a five year old.

She smiles a little wider. "No, it doesn't."

That relaxes me a little more and I move towards the chair, slowly sitting down in it.

The woman starts to select a few wires, the tips of them resting on her palm. A vial of clear, fizzy liquid that I didn't notice before sits on a small table next to me.

I didn't notice I had zoned out until the woman shakes my shoulder, snapping me out of it.

"Hold these wires, ok?" She says, and I grasp them with my left hand, not saying a word.

"Now all you have to do is drink this, and you'll begin."

I take the vial, careful not to spill anything.

I'm nervous. I don't want to drink whatever is in here, I don't.

But I have to.

"You ready?" The woman asks. "Ready as I'll ever be." I lie, the side of me that isn't Candor showing. I could never be ready for this.

I stare at the vial for a while, thinking. I need to do it now or I will never be able to.

I take a deep breath, and drink the unknown liquid. The last thing I notice is the panels in the ceiling.

And then the world goes black.
