Chapter Five

I wake up, shivering.

Today is the Choosing Ceremony.

Okay, I think to myself. It's fine. Breath in, and out. In, and out. Calm down.

It's going to be fine. I try to promise myself. Of course it'll be fine.

I even lie to myself in my brain. What kind of Candor am I?

I change from my pajamas to my regular clothes- black jeans with white pockets, white shirt, and black jacket with white accents. I change with slow, almost robotic movements.

As I pull on my jacket, I think to myself. Will this be my last time wearing Candor clothes?

I push open the door to my room, and step out into the kitchen, which is the room that connects to my room. Strange concept, but alright.

My mom's sitting at the table, a cup of coffee in her hand. The sleep has still not left her eyes.

My dad, on the other hand, is milling around the room, stopping at places in the kitchen to do various things such as flip a pancake or place a forgotten fork down on the table. He's wearing a grin that I have no doubt comes from the news of my aptitude test. Mom must have told him.

"Morning, Jenna!" My dad greets me, his smile getting bigger, if that was possible.

I raise an eyebrow. My dad is not a morning person. He must really be happy about my aptitude test. The feeling of guilt intensifies.

"You're never happy in the mornings, Dad. What's with the change?" I ask, even though I already know.

"Your mother told me your aptitude test results." He admits. "I'm just proud that my daughter will be continuing out family's legacy."

Oh, god. How could I possibly leave them after that speech?

I sit down at the table, where a plate of pancakes awaits. My parents are full believers of celebrating special days with a "special breakfast" to "start the special day off right".

"Did you hear about the Jones's?" My mom asks my dad, and he shakes his head, which instantly starts the story. That's one thing you learn fast in a Candor home-gossip is like gold.

I listen in, because I was raised by Candors and to be perfectly honest, I sometimes like to hear gossip. I kind of find it interesting.

"No, what about them?" My dad asks. The Jones family are another Candor family with one son who is in my math class- his name is Seto. We don't know them very well, I've only ever talked to Seto one time to ask for a pencil. I don't intentionally ignore him, it's just that most of the time in math I'm scribbling notes to study, doodling, or trying to catch a nap behind my textbook. All I know about the Jones's is that they are on of the completley Candor families, like us.

"Well, their son Seto told them beforehand that he would transfer to the faction that the aptitude test, no matter what it was. They were so sure he would get Candor, but he got Erudite. He's transferring to Erudite today."

My father shakes his head. "What nerve that boy has. Dishonoring your family heritage, betraying your own faction, can't believe it. We are lucky that our daughter knows better."

Well, now I'm truly done for. I want to trasfer to whatever faction I want to go, and if I end up deciding that I want to be Dauntless, my family would be so ashamed of me.

I finish my pancakes, and clear my place at the table while my family, who have already eaten, wait for me by the door.

I meet them by the door, and we head for the Choosing Ceremony.
