Chapter 13
"Gumball, where's you lunch?" Fionna asked curiously, gaining the other's interests. It was known that I always packed my own meals because I was very picky. So I guess seeing me without my purple lunch box was probably odd.
I tapped my fingers on the table impatiently, my chin being supported by my palm. "Marshall is supposed to be on his way with it, but as usual, he's running late," I scoffed and checked my phone for any word from him. Nothing. I rolled my eyes and continued loathing.
"Getting hangry, Gumball?" Flame teased. I just shot him a glare.
Finally, after ten, long minutes, Marshall approached our table with a bag of Chipotle. Bonnibel trailed behind him, a big white 'VISITOR' sticker on her chest. "Thank Glob! I haven't eaten all day, I'm famished! What took you so long? I only have less than 20 minutes to eat now." I checked my watch.
Marshall paused and narrowed his eyes at me. "I don't like your tone."
"Well I don't like your face, now gimme." I held out my hand.
"Damn. Maybe he needs a snickers bar too, 'cause he is definitely not himself even he's hungry," Flame commented. I gave him another glare.
Marshall seemed to ignore him and furrowed his eyebrows at me. "Excuse me, who do you think you're talking to like that? It's not my fault the line is always huge. Also, you're freaking welcome, I went out of my way for this. So quit pouting and eat, you brat." He tossed a burrito bowl in my direction along with a fork and napkin before handing a cheese quesadilla to Bonnie and getting out his own overstuffed burrito.
I wasted no time ripping off the shiny lid and began devouring the contents inside. I'm sure I was getting all sorts of strange looks from our table but I honestly couldn't care less, I was starving. After a few large bites I gained some of my sanity again. "Thank you very much, Marshall Lee. I appreciate all the effort you went through." I gave him a side hug.
"Yeah, you better," he mumbled through a mouthful of food and hugged back briefly.
"I apologize for scolding you, but I was absolutely starving. I thought my stomach was about to digest itself. I didn't have time to eat breakfast or pack any snacks this morning."
"Oh, you poor thing," he said sarcastically. I punched his arm. "Ow! You asshole. Eat your damn food, you're being annoying." He pointed sternly to the bowl on the table. I stuck my tongue out at him and took a few more bites.
"You guys are cute," someone said from my far right. I glanced over to see Bonnibel smiling on the other side of Marshall. I jumped out of my seat and ran towards her. She stood up as well and we hugged.
"Oh, Bonnibel, I almost forgot you were here! It's so nice to see you again! I'm sorry for not acknowledging you sooner." I gave her a squeeze and pulled away, grasping her hands in mine.
"Oh no no, I understand. And it's good to see you too, Barnaby, it's been too long. How have you been?" She spoke elegantly.
"Just wonderful, thank you. How about you? Marshall mentioned to me about you staying at his house for the time being, don't worry, he spared me the details, but I understand it must be something serious," I said sympathetically. Bonnibel seems to tense up a bit.
"Yes, I'm afraid something... tragic did occur, but we're working everything out, things will get better," she said and it looked like she said it to more herself than me.
"Well that's good to hear, I hope everything works out in the end. If you ever need anything or anyone to talk to, know that I'm here for you... So, how are you and Marceline doing?" I ask changing the subject. I turn towards the table and motioned for Marshall to move over. "Scoot so Bonnibel and I can chat," I say quietly. He scoffs and moves, switching our meals and engaging in conversation with Fionna and the rest.
"Oh we're just fine. We've been working a lot lately and things get kind of tense between us sometimes but that's just how it is. Love isn't as easy and beautiful as it seems, you know. But I love her to death and I couldn't be happier with her," Bonnibel spoke fondly, smoothing down her baby blue dress.
"That's wonderful to hear."
"Sooo, I heard about you and Marshall Lee, how is that working out so far?" She whispered with a little smirk on her lips. I went wide-eyed for a moment and let out an awkward laugh.
"So far, everything's been perfect. Marshall is a wonderful guy, he's so caring and compassionate, and has an amazing personality. He's just so..." I made a motion with my hand. "I don't even know how to begin describing him... He's extremely talented, stunning, funny... it makes me wonder how he ended up with someone as lame as me." I didn't even realize I was staring at Marshall that whole time until he turned and made eye contact with me, flashing his model-like smile before turning back to everyone else. He could easily be a model if he wanted to. "Exceptional. Extraordinary. Remarkable. Astonishing..."
Bonnibel giggled, drawing my attention back to her. I raised an eyebrow at her. "If you asked me, I'd say your in love."
I let out a sigh, my eyes going back to him. He was laughing and joking with Fionna. "I'm afraid I am... deeply." The sudden shrieking of a bell broke me out of my daze. "Darn. Looks like we'll have to continue this sometime else." Everyone in the cafeteria rose from their seats and threw away their trash, departing to their next class.
"It appears so. I'll see you later, Barnaby. It was a pleasure talking to you." Bonnibel pulled me into a hug.
"You as well." I smiled and pulled away, grabbing my bag and slinging it over my shoulder. "Marshall can you-"
"Already on it," he responded, packing up our lunch. He already finished his but I still had quite a bit left and didn't want to waste it. I smiled.
"Thank you. Oh, I still need to pay you back. Can I give it to you last period?"
"Sure." Marshall smiled and pulled me into a tight embrace. "I wanna kiss you," he whispered into my ear after a while. I felt my face heat up.
"Do you wanna tell them today?" I whispered back and added, "Because I wanna kiss you too." I pressed my body into his a little more.
"If you really want to we can."
"But do you?"
"I don't care if we tell them today or not. It's up to you, boo," he whispered, pinching my side. I giggled and smacked his hand away.
"Why does it have to be up to me?" We pulled away a little so we could look each other in the face and spoke in a hushed tone, just above a whisper.
"Because I don't like making decisions." He shrugged.
"Well neither do I-"
"Just whatever! Are we telling them or not?" He said impatiently. I rolled my eyes.
"Sure! Let's tell them!" I replied just as moody and finally pulled away and started to my next class that was just down the hall.
"Okay!" He said annoyed, but I could tell he wasn't serious.
"Okay!" I mocked him in a deeper, dumber sounding voice.
"Go to class!"
"Refrigerate that, please!" I yelled back and jogged to catch up with Fionna.
"What was that about?" She asked, glancing back at Marshall for a second.
"Oh nothing." I smiled and together we walked arm-in-arm to our next period.

The bell finally rung, signaling it was time for the last period of the day. Aka, the period Marshall and I come out to our friends. Everyone in the whole world already knows I'm gay, I mean just look at me! Even so, to say I was nervous would be an understatement. I already knew how everything was going to plan out, I imagined it 50 different ways in my head, but there was still that one possibility everything could go wrong. I really hoped it wouldn't.
I stood by the vending machine where I always wait for the others to arrive. Like always, Fionna and Cake come first, followed by Mono who makes out with Cake until Flame walks over and scoffs at them. Once Phoebe finally arrives, we make our way down the hall to Marshall's class. I don't think I'll ever get used to saying that.
Through the windows in the door, it appeared the lights were off. Fionna peered inside and giggled. "What?" Flame asked, looking inside too. "I don't get it, they're just watching a movie. What's so funny?"
"Shh! I'm gonna sneak up on 'em, that's what!"
"Here we go," Cake sighed, leaning into Mono.
"Wait wait! I wanna get this on video!" Phoebe exclaimed pulling out her phone. Fionna slowly pushed open the door and crouched down, sneaking through. We all crowded around the door, trying to catch a glimpse. When Fionna was half way, she turned back with a finger against pressed against her lips, telling us to be quiet. She continued crawling stealthily until she was right behind them. They sat on the ground with the backs away from us, looking at the movie projected on the wall in front of them. It was some horror movie, even better.
Just when there was about to be a jump scare, Fionna yelled out a loud, "Boo!" And pushed them. The two screamed loudly. Bonnie fell over and crawled away, and to all of our surprise, Marshall quickly turned and punched Fionna square in the nose. We all let out a gasp and rushed in when we saw her fall back, someone turning the lights on.
"Holy shit! Fionna? Oh my glob, I'm so sorry!" Marshall panicked. Fionna slowly sat up and gingerly touched her nose, looking at the blood on her finger. Cake rushed over and cradled her, and I followed.
"Did you just punch me?" She directed towards Marshall. His eyes were blown wide open.
"Fionna, I'm really sorry! I didn't mean to, I swear! It was just a reflex!"
"Is there a first aid kit? I need some cotton to stop the bleeding. Cake, keep her head back," I called out, taking action.
"I have a tampon in my purse!" Bonnie ran over to her bag and threw it to me. I caught it and unwrapped it, pulling out the cotton piece and turning towards Fionna.
"Oh this is sooo going on YouTube," Phoebe said, still recording the whole thing.
"Nuh uh, dude, you're not putting one of those in my face!" She shouted, trying to swat it away. Cake held her back.
"It's just to stop the bleeding, Fionna. Bonnie give me another one!" Her other nostril started to ooze red.
"Gumball, it's just a bloody nose. You're all acting like I'm dying or something," Fionna said, trying to escape her sister's grip.
"Baby, be quiet and let the boy work. He knows what he's doing," Cake said pushing her head back. Bonnibel handed me the piece of cotton and I plugged both of them in her nose.
"Does anyone have an ice pack?" I called out again.
"I have a squishy one in my lunch-" Phoebe started to say.
"I got it!" Marshall announced, running over and yanking it from her lunch box. He handed it to me and knelt down beside us. I could tell he felt like he wasn't doing enough and wanted to prove that he cared. I gently pressed the chilled blue bag on Fionna's face and told Cake to keep it there.
"Should we take her to the nurse?" Flame suggested. Fionna rolled her eyes.
"They'd do the exact same thing as I did except with thinner cotton and harder ice." It was quiet for a while.
"How does your nose feel, babycakes?" Cake asked Fionna, running her fingers through her golden hair.
"Feels like it got punched," she replied nasally and unenthusiastically.
"Fifi, I'm so sorr-" Marshall began.
"Shut up, ya bun-brain. I'm fine! It was just a little punch, nothing to cry about."
"I just feel bad-"
"Well stop feeling bad then! Jee-wiz, you all act like I'm a little baby or something. I can take a hit, I'm fine," she said sternly, although her voice still sounded funny, making her not seem as serious. Marshall frowned. "And don't think I won't get you back for this! Once Cake let's me go I'll be on you like... like... I don't know, but imma getchu back!" She threatened. Marshall smirked.
"I don't want another bloody nose to deal with, please," I said. Fionna and Marshall just smiled. I rolled my eyes at them. They were so hard headed sometimes.
"Well... Now what?" Flame said. Somehow, everyone's eyes fell to me.
"Don't ask me, I'm not the teacher," I replied blankly. Everyone's eyes went to Marshall. His face flushed.
"Uh... movies?" He smiled awkwardly, gesturing to the projector on the ground.
Not much time later we were all curled up on the ground watching some superhero movie. Marshall and I were leaning against the piano bench we pulled over. Sometime later into the movie, Marshall yawned, stretching his arms up and wrapped one around my shoulders. I laughed and rolled my eyes at him. "Oh, my glob, I know you did not just do that. You're such a cheese ball."
"That's me. And hey, that was an actual yawn, alright? I'm exhausted. Bonnie keeps having nightmares and I can never get any sleep." He yawned again.
"Aw, poor thing," I said sympathetically and laced my fingers with his hand that was around my shoulders.
"I know right? I'm so tired."
"I was talking about Bonnibel, but sure, you too." I smirked, giving his hand a squeeze. He gave me an unamused look before pushing my knee playfully. I smiled and suggested, "Go take a nap when you get home then."
"You should come over and nap with me," he said. "Or maybe we could do a little more," he spoke in a seductive voice while wiggling his eyebrows before diving his face into my neck, giving it a sloppy kiss. I shoved his head away with a giggle, surely a blush on my cheeks. "I like your man-giggle. It's cute."
"Stop that!" I whisper-shouted, hiding my face behind my other hand. I glanced behind my shoulder. "Someone is gonna notice us-"
"Literally no one is paying attention to us. Why do you care anyway? They're gonna know eventually." Marshall pulled my hand away brought it up to his lips, giving it a tender kiss while making eye contact with me. My face felt hot again.
"You're right... Screw it then." I swung my legs over his and rested my head on his shoulder, snuggling into him. Marshall let out a little laugh and placed a loving kiss on my head. He rested his head on mine and his free hand held onto my thigh, massaging it with his thumb occasionally. It stayed like this for the rest of class, Marshall and I playing with each other's fingers and me smiling like a love-sick idiot the whole time.
Sadly, the bell had rung and everyone started getting up from their spots on the floor. Marshall lifted his head and I looked up at him, watching him run his eyes tiredly. Did he fall asleep? Adorable.
"Hey Gummy, can I take these tampons ou- Whoa! What's going on here?" Fionna stood right in front of us now, staring with googly eyes. "I knew it!" She exclaimed, pointing at us. She attracted the attention of the other four and they walked over, curious as to what Fionna was freaking out about.
"Girl, what are you-? Aww!! Look at these two babies in love! How cute!" Cake squealed and clung to Mono's side.
"Whoa, when did this happen!?" Phoebe shouted.
"Uh... surprise?" I smiled innocently.
"Oh my glob!! Are you guys a thing now!?" Fionna yelled again. I hadn't seen her smile this big in while.
"Yup. Since Saturday," Marshall said from beside me. He still looked tired. He tapped my leg twice and I lifted them off of him so he could stand up. Marshall extended his hand for me to take and helped me up. "Oh! You know what that means right?" I looked at him in confusion. "Happy two day anniversary!" He went to hug me.
I pushed him away hard and pretended to dry heave. "Ew! Please, never say that to me, ever again!" I gagged again for comedic effect. "I really hope you're joking." Everyone else laughed, including Marshall.
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!" he laughed and wrapped his arms around me, resting his head on my shoulder. "Don't worry, I'm not that clingy."
I looked down at him "You sure about that?"
"Needy, maybe, but not clingy. There's a difference." He smiled innocently up at me.
"Well, this is getting too gay for me so I'm gonna head out. See ya, man," Flame walked over and Marshall let go of me. They both did their secret handshake/bro-hug thing that they always do. "Oh! Also, call me later. I gotta talk to you about something."
"Sure thing. Later, man." They shared one last fist bump before Flame said bye to everyone and left with Phoebe. Then Fionna came up to me, the tampons out of her nose. It was started to bruise already.
She hugged me tightly, lifting me up a little. "Eek! I'm so happy for you two!" She smiled brightly then leaned in close so no one else could hear. "Now if only hot head would ask me out then we could go on a double date. Triple date even, with Cake and Mono."
"That'd be cute!" I whispered back. "But they'd just be making out the whole time..."
"You're right. We'll just stick with us four," she giggled and hugged me again.
"Sounds good," I laughed and hugged her back. "I hope your nose gets better. Make sure to keep ice on it."
"Yeah, yeah."
When Cake, Mono, and Fionna were about to leave, Fionna turned back around. "Oh, Marshall! I almost forgot." She skipped over to him, a devilish smirk on her lips.
"What do you want, bunny? Oh... oh no. Not too hard, please! Also not the crotch! Anywhere but there!" Marshall's eyes widened, and he cupped his hands over his lower region. He actually looked scared. Fionna raised her fist and Marshall flinched, covering his face. Fionna laughed at him.
"Dude, come on! Did you really think I was gonna hit you when you'd expect it?" Marshall slowly dropped his hands, eyeing the blonde suspiciously and cautiously. Fionna quickly raised her fist again and did one of those fake lunges at him.
"Ah! Stop with the teasing! Just get it over with already!" He screamed and cowered over, clutching onto himself. Poor guy.
"Well I can't do it if you're all bent over like that." Fionna stood with her hands on her hips. Marshall slowly stood up straight. His eyes were squinted shut and his hands were still protecting his goods.
30 seconds passed and we were all still waiting in anticipation for Fionna's big punch. I'd hate to be in Marshall's position. Fionna could really hit. I didn't want for him to go through this, but I couldn't do anything but watch. He got himself into this mess.
Marshall finally sighed and opened one eye, the anticipation probably killing him. "Fionnaaa! Come on already! Are you gonna hit me or n-!" His sentence was cut short by Fionna's deadly fist. We all let out a gasp as Marshall's head whipped to the side and he stumbled back.
"Ow~ my cheek meat..." Marshall clutched his cheek before his eyes rolled back a little and he fell to the floor with a thud. He was out cold.
"Fionna!" I shouted and rushed to his side, Bonnie right beside me.
"Oh dang. I didn't mean to punch him that hard. Oh well, he deserved it. Sorry, Marsh." Fionna shrugged and walked out with Cake, who seemed pleased. I mean, he did hurt her little sister earlier.
I let out a sigh and looked down at my unconscious boyfriend, a bruise starting to form near his cheekbone. "Well. He did say he wanted a nap." Bonnie giggled half-heartedly.
Well, this is definitely not how I imagine that would go.
