8.

I was about to end my shift and close the bookshop when I noticed Matt standing outside.

I waved at him, and he waved back and walked in.

"What are you doing here? And what are those for?" I asked pointing at the bags in his hands.

"Surprise. Go get your stuff." Matt said, and I immediately obeyed and went to find my bag.

When we walked out I asked, "So can you tell me now what are we doing?"

"Celebrating"

"What?"

"Well, your birthday of course. I mean, yes, it is tomorrow, but since I have other plans for you tomorrow and we haven't watched the sunset at Primrose Hill for quite some time, I decided I'm gonna take you there today."

I couldn't stop smiling. "Did I already tell you that you're the best?"

My work isn't far from Primrose Hill, so we came there in quite a short time.

Matt pulled out a blanket from one of his bags and gestured me to sit down. After he sat down too, he also pulled out a red wine, two glasses, and some of my favourite snacks.

I just shook my head in disbelief.

I looked at him and couldn't help but lean in to kiss him on the cheek.

"I didn't even give you my present yet." Matt laughed.

"What present? You weren't supposed to buy me anything!"

"Well...technically I didn't buy it. I made it. And celebrating 20 years is something special so...I just wanted you to have something to remember it." Matt explained and then handed me something wrapped in gift paper.

I tore the paper, and a tear fell down my cheek.

It was a knitted cardigan. The colour was midnight blue, similar to his jumper, but prettier.

"You knitted this? For me?" I look at him in disbelief. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that he spent countless hours knitting it for me.

"Yeah, but Lizz, why are you crying?" Matt asked but I couldn't explain. I just hugged him. And I hugged him for quite a while.

"Thank you. I love it." I looked at him while still holding him. "When did you even manage to get it done? I mean, we're always together and I never saw you knitting it."

"I just used every free moment, like for example when I came home earlier than you, when you were sleeping or when you were thinking I was learning and so on," Matt said, and that caused me to cry again. He laughed at me and started to wipe away my tears with his thumbs.

I was wearing a hoodie but I took it off and changed it right away for my new cardigan.

"Looks perfect. The colour suits your eyes" Matt said and brushed my hair "and your hair."

"Are you praising your own selection of the colour?" I said jokingly which made him burst out laughing.

"Wine?" Matt suggested after a while.

I nodded and grabbed the wine glasses.

In that moment, everything felt so good and perfect, and I didn't care about how my actions looked. I just sat between Matt's legs, my back on his chest and one of his arms wrapped around my waist. Drinking wine, eating snacks and watching the sunset. It truly was the most perfect day.

I looked at all the people there and I couldn't help but feel so grateful and happy.

"I'm so thankful that in this world we managed to find each other," I said to Matt.

"Me too, Lizzy."

"I don't wanna lose you. Ever."

"You won't. I won't let that happen." Matt said and placed a kiss on top of my head.

That's why I don't know if we should be more than friends. Because I wouldn't survive it if something happened to us.

I quickly brushed the thoughts off so that I wouldn't ruin the perfect day.

------------

When my alarm woke me up, I could already hear music coming from the kitchen.

I somehow managed to get out of bed and followed the sound.

Matt immediately noticed me, and pulled me into his arms, and lifted me up. "Happy Birthday Lizzy!"

When he put me back on the floor I looked around the kitchen I could see that he was making pancakes and that there was a cake in the oven.

"Matt, since when are you up?"

"You don't wanna know and don't worry about it."

"Matty, you didn't have to-"

"Shut up. I said to not worry about it."  He interrupted me.

"Ugh, okay. Just don't forget about the pancakes because I'm sure you would blame it on me distracting you again." I said jokingly creating a big smile on his face.

"By the way, don't forget to run straight home after school. We're leaving from here at 5 p.m.." Matt reminded me while he served me my heart-shaped pancakes.

"Yeah, don't worry, I'll be here early."

----------

I came home at 4 p.m., so I had enough time to get ready. Matt was already there. He was lying on the couch, reading a psychology book.

"Can you give me at least some hints, so that I can decide what to wear?" I asked him.

"Wear something nice but comfortable."

"That didn't help."

"Okay then...wear a dress. Happy?"

"Better. What kind of shoes? Can I wear heels or are we gonna walk?"

"We are gonna walk only for a bit. Most of the time we're gonna be sitting. So I don't know what you prefer."

"Okay, thanks," I said and went to find something to wear.

I picked out a tight black dress, that had a cutout on the back and boots on a small heel.

I have wavy hair, but since it was a bit crazy, I decided to curl it a bit and put on a black bow in it.

I added a bit more mascara and then, also put on my favourite red lipstick.

"Wow. You look...stunning." Matt said when I walked out of my room.

"You look pretty handsome too." I complimented him and his cheeks flushed a little. He looked so hot. He was wearing his black tailored trousers and a white button-up shirt.

I put on the cardigan from Matt, took my bag, and we were on our way.

On the tube on the central line, I already had my suspicion where we were going and it was confirmed when we got off at Notting Hill Gate.

We walked around our favourite parts of Notting Hill until we reached my favourite Italian restaurant.

We had a reservation at my favourite table next to the window.

I, of course, had a hard time deciding whether to order pasta or pizza so Matt ordered both so that we could share.

"You make a beautiful couple. Are guys celebrating an anniversary?" Said an elderly waiter who brought us our champagne.

"Actually, it's her birthday that we're celebrating." Matt answered without denying the 'couple' allegations.

"Oh, well, happy birthday, my dear." The waiter said, and I thanked him and gave him an appreciative smile.

"How long have you been a couple if you don't mind me asking?"

"Soon it's gonna be 3 happy years," Matt said and I was trying not to laugh.

"Beautiful. Well, I wish you all the best. I can tell that this is a match made in heaven. I hope you'll invite me to the wedding." The waiter said with a cheeky smile, and we all started laughing.

"We sure will," I confirmed.

We couldn't stop laughing and joking about it, even when the waiter left.

It didn't take long before our food was served too.

At first, I ate the ravioli and Matt the pizza, and then we exchanged our plates.

"Honey, I think we should consider this place for our engagement party." I teased after we finished our meals.

"You're right, darling. I think it would be perfect."

After we came home, Matt instructed me to sit down on the couch and wait. So I did.

After a while, Matt started walking towards me with my birthday cake while singing Happy Birthday to me.

When he placed it on the table, he kissed me on the cheek and sat next to me. "Make a wish."

So many things to wish for. But then I decided on a neutral and universal wish.

I want us to be happy.

I blew out the candles, and Matt took some pictures of me.

Then he handed me a knife to cut it.

Before we started to eat the cake I suggested: "Do you wanna watch something?"

"Of course," Matt said and went to find his laptop.

We decided to watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

"Thank you for today. And yesterday. And, well, actually for every day." I said after the movie ended.

"You're welcome," Matt said. We couldn't stop staring into each other's eyes. So many things to be said.

Matt gently cleared off a strand of my hair that fell into my eye. However, he didn't pull back his hand and rested it on my cheek.

I couldn't resist him anymore. I grabbed his head into my hand and pulled him in for a kiss. He immediately reacted with more kisses and he buried his hands in my hair.

We paused to catch our breaths but we both started laughing when we looked at each other. He had red stains from my lipstick all over his face and mine was completely smudged.

I helped him to get it off with a napkin.

"Okay, uhm, I guess I'm gonna take the make-up off and change and I'll come back," I said, took my pyjamas from my room and disappeared into the bathroom. I took a shower too, and it all took me a bit more than I expected.

When I walked out of there, I could see that Matt already fell asleep on the couch.

I didn't want to wake him up but he told me to do so multiple times because his back was always killing him the next day.

"Matty. Hey. Wake up, Matty." I said and he started to murmur in protest. "You need to go to bed," I explained and that helped to wake him up a bit. I was holding him, and walking him to his bedroom since he was still so asleep that he could barely walk. When he finally laid down, I covered him with his comforter.

"Liz" Matt said so quietly that I could barely hear him, so I leaned down closer to him.

"Can you...stay here?" He asked.

"You want me to sleep here?" I asked.

"Please." Matt confirmed, and I couldn't say 'no'. With zero hesitation, I walked to the other side of the bed and lay down next to him.
