Star
For Star, you know how her character developed. Books 1 and 2 displayed that very well. She explained to you the important childhood events and how her mother taught her to use the magic that shaped her personality. Star learned to compress her emotions in order to properly use her magic.
It was not until she met Ike and her friends when she finally learned the difference between strong negative emotions and strong positive ones. She learned to open up more and the control over her magic required more than just learning to control her emotions. Despite her shy nature at first due to only wanting to save and protect her mother and father, she quickly learned that doing so alone was almost impossible.
With the help of her newly found friends, she learned valuable information about her emotions and saved her parents from certain destruction. Throughout books 1 and 2, Star became the character she is now in book 3.
Merric
As for Merric, his character development came from the mixture of how his magic works and the personality I imagined him developing from being Star's oldest during the war they were in. Star was taught to compress her emotions and so was Merric, which helped develop his tsun tsun nature. He grew up adoring his mother. She was his idol and he wanted to be as good as her with the magic. He grew very close with his mother and felt like he could tell her anything.
When the Demon Lord kills his mother and everyone he loved right before his eyes, this forces extreme emotional trauma upon him, forcing him to do drastic measures with his dark magic his mother told him never to do. When he meets his mother again in the past, he chooses to be harsh towards her showing his cold personality he has developed. He is harsh towards her because deep down he thinks she is the best mother in the world and does everything so perfectly. A strange way to view her that way, because at a young age he surpasses her in strength and still believes she is much stronger than him.
When young Merric loses his mother to the demon that has been chasing her since she was young, he grows cold to everyone he loves due to the fear of getting close with them and losing them again. He is prone to only showing his true feelings very vaguely and rarely. Only the ones who are really close to him know how he truly feels and sees right through his sarcastic words and steely eyes.
Lance
As for Lance, the younger son of Star I imagined as being silly because of the serious nature his brother and mother has. His brother Merric actually shaped Lance's personality, where Lance thought he had to be the silly one to keep his brother sane. Even though he is slightly afraid of his brother and did not fully understand him, he wanted to help him best he can.
During the time when they lose their parents in the war, all the pressure was getting to Merric and Lance took it upon himself to help his brother feel better, despite the fact Merric did not tell him much of what happened. Lance grew cold as well, but deep down he really wanted to be warm and loving like before. Being around his brother, who is extremely cold after losing their parents, he learns that maybe Merric is right and distancing themselves is what they should do. When Merric explains to Lance that they must hide themselves to save their mother, he decides that a cold personality is the best choice, knowing they cannot return when they complete their mission.
Lance grew up close to his father who trained him with the blade. He remembers laughing constantly with his father while picking on his brother, then getting him to laugh afterwards.
Ike
Ike is a great character. He's one of my faves from the fire emblem series. That is why I added him here!
Ike, born in Gallia, and the son to the owner of the Greil Mercenaries who helped save the runaway princess of Crimea in the war between Crimea and Daein. He used to be a weak fighter in his father's mercenary band. He was stubborn and only wanted to best his father. He wanted his father to be proud of him.
He learns to be a strong and kind mercenary after his father's death and his main purpose turns to search for his father's killer and best him in battle. A legendary fight between both blessed blades, Alondite vs. Ragnell, the blades of Begnion, neighboring Kingdom to Daein, Crimea and Gallia. After the war, Ike is labelled the hero and is never to be seen again, until the sequel where his surprise entrance saves Crimea once again.
Myst
Myst, well, she is just the sweet little sister of the oldest son to a man who runs a mercenary company. She grows very attached to her brother when the war takes both of her parents. She grows wishing to help her brother the best she can with healing magic and other abilities.
Greil [Papa]
And then there is Papa, Greil, Mercenary commander. I really found his story interesting in the fire emblem series. In the first game, he is a mystery when his death happens and slowly throughout the game you learn more about him, Ike's mother and the childhood of both Ike and Myst. He is the proud father of a son who at first was weak and could not best him in a sparring match. His death matured Ike and he took over the company, not wanting to be a leader.
If you want me to update with more specific characters, please let me know in the comments! Hope you enjoyed the character development breakdown!
