ミ★ Chapter 5 ★彡
(Alyphs' POV)
I'm working on the brand-new robot body that Hapstablook asked for a few days ago. He's a ghost, so he can possess it. But in all honesty, I haven't been able to start doing it. All I have is a sketch of how it will look, and it's got no colors.
Hapstablook... His brother is lucky to have him in his life. He's a loyal friend and a kind brother, always willing to lend a helping hand.
I start sketching the colors I might use on the left side of the paper. I list some items I'll need.
-Steel
-Aluminum
-plexiglass
-plastic
-Copper
-Rubber
-Silicon
-lead
I sigh and drop my pencil. It hits the table with a soft 'clink'.
I hadn't slept well last night. I was only awake because Asgore brought some tea back with him from the lab when he visited last time. I sit back in my chair and take a sip of the warm tea, feeling a bit of stress drain away.
I get the cup and drink the rest in one go. I set it down and put a picture of me and Hapstablook together in front of me. I take a moment to admire the photo, feeling a sense of calm wash over me as I take in the memories of our time together.
I stared at it for a few seconds before setting it down and getting back to work. Ah, the power of nostalgia - it can make you feel better in an instant and get you motivated to tackle any task.
I start drawing the schematic but get stuck when a thought crosses my mind: How do I power the robot?
A loud 'thwam' followed the door closing, and I quickly turned to the sound, my heart pounding. All I can think is 'please don't be Hapstablook, please don't be hapstablook—'
Oh crud.
"Alphys! Al! My darling bud! How's the mech coming along?" Hapstablook floats into the room, a wide smile on his face and excitement in his eyes. The last thing I wanted to do today was disappoint him.
I position myself to hide the half finished plans and hoped he wouldn't see them. Gosh, I'd procrastinated far too long already.
"It's all going great! Based on my calculations, it should be finished in no time!" I hoped he wouldn't catch on that I was lying. I could work overtime for the next week or so, get it done on time, maybe.
"Awesome!" He claps his hands quickly, smiling at me. He still hadn't noticed the unfinished plans behind me. "I was thinking, maybe we could add some pops of pink to the robot, wouldn't that be cool?"
"Mhmm!" I felt really stressed suddenly. Sure, it was a lot of work, and sure, I hadn't slept much lately, but I was great at getting stuff done! I didn't get stressed or overwhelmed.
Hapstablook, eyes filled with curiosity, started getting closer and closer, a few more steps and he'd see what was behind me. 'Quick, come up with an excuse!'
"You can't see it now! It's gotta be a surprise!" I blurted, hoping he'd turn around.
"Come on Alphys, I wanna know how you make robots!" Hapsta steps closer. No no no-
"N-not this one! It's- It's a surprise, really!" An obvious stammer filled my voice now, and I could feel tears pricking at my eyes.
I just didn't want to make him sad. I bit my lip, hoping to prevent myself from completely breaking down in front of him.
"Alphys? Everything alright?" He asks suddenly, ghostly eyebrows furrowing.
"Yep! I'm good!" I say maybe a bit too fast. I can feel my breathing picking up. 'Now is not the time to panic!'
Hapstablook rolls his eyes, clearly catching on to my lies now. I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I force a smile, hoping Hapstablook won't notice the tears welling up in my eyes.
"Alphys, I know you. Something's wrong. What is it darling?"
I look towards my feet, wringing my hands and hesitating to speak. "Nothings wrong, Hapsta. Everything's fine, really." I said quietly after a second.
"If you're worrying about the robot, don't. I'm sure it'll be great, you're an amazing scientist!" And honestly, I just wanted the suit to be done to that I could give you a proper hug. Take your time, Alphys. There's no rush."
I looked up from the floor, and gave Hapstablook a small smile. How he knew that I needed those words right now, I'll never know. When I finally spoke my words were barely above a mumble.
"Thank you."
'2 days left.'
