Chapter 10- The Right Arm
Jumping into Bertha, we spent the next few hours on the road. My back was begging to stiffen and I had pins and needles in my legs. But that wasn't all. Everyone was ignoring me like the plague and I couldn't handle it. It felt like I was all alone, and that's the one thing I hated and feared most.
"Looks like we walk from here." Jorge spoke. Looking out the front window, I seen we came to a bridge with abandoned cars that blocked the road. I watched everyone as they got out of the truck, before I followed. But as we crossed the bridge, I had the feeling we were being watched. It was unsettling and it honestly bugged me.
As everyone looked threw the abandoned cars, I looked down at the dried up lake. Hearing the sound of rumbling, I looked up to the cliff opposite to the bride. It was then that I heard gun fire coming somewhere beside me.
"Damn!"
"Quick! Get down!"
"Take cover!"
"Whoa!" I heard all the others cry, as we all rushed for cover.
"Hey, is everyone okay out there?" I heard Thomas call out. Checking myself I seen I didn't get shot this time. Knowing I was fine, I hoped everyone else was ok. And my panic was washed away when everyone replied that they are.
"Anyone know where those bloody shots came from?" I heard Newt call out in question. Taking a deep breath, I went to look over the bonit of the car, but was stopped when a shot fired. Trying to think of something, I came up empty handed.
"Everybody!" Jorge called out. "Get ready to sprint back to the truck! And hold your ears!" He called out. Looking around I tried to see if I could try and see anyone, as I prepared to make a runner.
"Now!" I heard a unfamiliar female voice call out. "I said drop it!" Turning back to where I heard the voices, I seen everyone standing up with their hand held in the air. They were being threatened by two girls who pointed their guns at them. "You! Get here now!" The girl spotted me. Not wanting to be shot at again, I raised my arms and made my way over. Both the girls looked over us, till she stopped on Aris. "Aris?" She spoke, before pulling her scarf off her face.
"Oh, my God. Harriet?" Aris gasped.
"My God. What the hell are you doing here?" The girl Harriet asked, rushing over to hug Aris.
"Sonya." Aris turned to the other girl.
"Aris, you're lucky we didn't shoot your dumb ass." The other girl, Sonya smiled also hugging Aris.
"Uh... What's happening?" Mihno asked.
"Care to explain Aris?" I asked.
"We were in the maze together." Aris answered, a smile on his face. After trying to progress everything, I realised other people were beginning to appear. They all seemed to be caring heavy artillery. Following the girls threw the bridge, we came in contact with more people and working vehicles.
"We're taking them to base." Harriet spoke to one of the men. As she lead us to a vehicle. They all started talking, but I wasn't really paying attention to them. My mind went else where.
Glancing towards Mihno, I seen he was paying attention to the conversation. Even when we drove for an hour or so, to the Right Arm camp, they all talked like everything was fine. But it was like I didn't exist. 'They must be really mad at me. I don't blame them though. But if only I could explain myself.'
By the time we got to the camp, we were taken to see Vince, who I presumed to be the boss. For he was the one who decides if we can stay or not. Being lead threw the camp by Harriet and Sonya, we went looking for Vince.
"Who are they?" A man asked, as he appeared in front of us.
"They're Immunes." Harriet replied. "Caught them coming up the mountain."
"Did you check 'em?" The man asked. 'I take it this guy's Vince?'
"I know this guy, Aris. I trust him." Harriet pointed to Aris.
"Well I don't. Check 'em." Vince spoke. Looking among the group, I noticed Brenda seeing and groaning in front of me.
"Hey, boss..." A guy spoke before Teresa, looking at Brenda just before she collapsed forward.
"Brenda!" Jorge cried. Rushing to her side, Jorge help her close to his chest while I went to observe her.
"I'm sorry." Brenda kept saying. Looking down on her leg, I noticed it was bandaged. I went to go look at it, but Vince beat me to it. When he moved there bandaged, it revealed a night mark that had a very familiar spreading 'virus'.
"Oh shit!" He gasped, pulling away and taking out his gun. "Crank! We got a Crank!" He pointed the gun towards Brenda.
"No!!"
"Wait, wait!" Everyone panicked. Moving to the opposite side of Brenda, I tried to shield her from anyone who would try to shoot her.
"This just happened. She's not dangerous yet." Thomas spoke, trying to calm the situation.
"You should have brought her here." Vince spoke.
"I know." Thomas said.
"We let Cranks in here now, the safe haven doesn't last a week!" Vince yelled out. "Step back!" He demanded.
"Stop yelling!!" I screamed over the top of everyone. "Listen to yourself. Your all worrying over a problem that can be fixed. So theirs no need to yell over each other."
"Yea. I can put her out of her misery." Vince got ready to shoot Brenda, but I wouldn't move.
"Vince, that's enough!" A woman cried out.
"She's infected, Doc." Vince spoke, his voice filled with fear. "There's nothing we can do for her."
"No but they can." The woman smiled, looking at Thomas and I. "Hello Thomas, Taylor."
"What?" Vince looked at the woman then at Thomas.
"You know us?" Thomas asked.
"Interesting. It makes sense they'd put youse in the maze." The woman spoke, making her way past me to Brenda. "Though I must admit... I was worried they'd kill youse after what youse did."
"What we did?" I turned around and looked down on her.
"The first time we spoke, you said you couldn't take it anymore, watching your friends die, one by one. The last time we spoke. You gave me the coordinates of every WICKED compound, trial and lab." She replied.
"They were our source." Vince said.
"We couldn't have pulled all this off without youse." She smiled. "Take her to the tent." She looked down at Brenda. "And get these guys some warm clothes." She order the people around us. "Thomas. Come on." She said. Watching as Thomas followed her, I stayed behind with the others. I didn't know what I was to do.
