Revival
"Just tell me why you're grinning like a Cheshire Cat," Frank asked me.
"In time, Frank, in time. Is Bogey back yet? We have to go somewhere."
"Him and Tex should be returning any minute. He sent a message that he was on his way back and that they did everything we asked. I sure hope the cops don't stop them. I'd like to see Bogey explain the fact that the only person in his car is a robot bartender."
"Well, let's go up and meet them," I turned to Jackie, "if I could ask you for favor, I'd really appreciate it if you stay here till we get back and make sure no one messes with the lab. I'll also need to keep Tex for a while if that's all right."
She smiled, "No problem, Chief. And as for you," she put her arm on Frank's shoulder, "we need to have a nice long conversation when you get back."
I think I saw Frank blush. He just nodded. We went upstairs to the parking lot and waited for Bogey.
Bogey pulled up about five minutes later and before Tex could exit, we had him back in the backseat sitting between Frank and I. I pulled out the sheet of paper that Yurgo gave me with the address on it.
"Bogey, we're gonna need to go to 2315 Delmar St., I believe that's in Ventura proper."
"It is indeed, Sean. We will arrive at the destination in approximately 10 minutes. May I ask why we're going there?"
"Well, Bogey, that's the address that Yurgo gave me. The one where he has an item that I really want...that he offered me in exchange for my help."
"How intriguing," Bogey commented.
Frank butt in, "I didn't know you could be intrigued."
"Neither did I, Frank. It is the most stimulating sensation. I'm very happy that you and Sean are here. The bartender Tex is not very outgoing. He is specifically a service machine, and does not engage in any type of banter with other AIs, only with bar patrons and even those conversations are apparently very rote."
"I was going to ask you what you two talked about, but apparently not much. Did everything go smoothly at the warehouse?"
"Oh yes, quite smoothly. Tex may not be garrulous, but he is very strong and efficient in what he does. He deposited the bodies, after tying them up, on the floor of the warehouse. He made the phone call to the police and put the gun back in Bannister 's pocket. We departed soon thereafter."
"They're certainly going to be in for a surprise," Frank said, "the four of them are going to wake up without a clue. And as for Preston, he's effectively going to be a toddler. Those are going to be some surprised cops that show up."
"I imagine so," I said, They'll get what they deserve and Miles will have the opportunity to literally become an entirely new person. I should feel a little bit guilty, but as my mama always said, Good riddance to bad rubbish."
Buggy interrupted, "We have arrived at our destination. It is that large industrial building with the blue door."
"Thank you, Bogey, Frank, Tex, come with me, we have things to do."
We got out of the car and walked to the blue door. I fished through my pockets for the key which Yurgo had given me with the note. I found it still in the envelope he'd handed me. I took it out and inserted it into the lock. It fit perfectly. I turned it, unlocking the door. The door opened and we walked in.
There was a long corridor with several doorways on either side. As we walked in the hall, we checked each of the rooms, they were all empty. The only door that was closed was the one facing us at the end of the hall. When we reached it, I paused.
I took a deep breath and turned the knob. I stepped in. Frank's eyes widened and his jaw dropped. Even though I knew what to expect, I couldn't help but be surprised.
There, laying on a gurney, with a hydration drip in her arm and various monitoring wires taped to her body was an attractive woman with dark hair. She was approximately forty years old. There was a robo-nurse standing behind her.
"Who in the bloody hell is that?" Frank asked.
"I have absolutely no idea Frank, I've never seen her before in my life."
"And yet," Frank said suspiciously, "you don't really seem to be surprised that she's here."
"No Frank, I'm not." I stepped up to the unconscious woman and checked the monitoring equipment. She seemed healthy. I addressed the robot, "What is her status?"
The nurse turn toward me, "The patient is in fine health, she is presently under sedation."
"That's great, thank you."
Frank grabbed my shoulder, "What the hell is going on? What's wrong with her?"
"The same thing that's presently wrong with Miles. She must've crossed Yurgo, she's been erased."
"You mean to tell me that Yurgo took this poor woman and emptied her brain, because she crossed him in someway?"
"That's exactly right," I said, "I'm not sure what she did to piss him off, but she must've done a pretty good job of it, poor thing. These are pretty horrible people we've been forced to deal with. But at least Yurgo kept his word to me."
"Please tell me what's going on," Frank pleaded, "This is just too weird for me."
"Pork-sex-electron, Frank."
"What?"
"Pork-sex-electron, Frank. What is pork?"
Frankly was confused, "It's pigmeat, I guess."
"Right, pig. What is sex?"
"Making love?"
"If I ask you what sex you are, what do you say?"
"Male...and electron?"
"What kind of a particle is an electron Frank?" I asked.
Frank thought for a second, "It's an ion."
"Right," I said smiling, " and now put them all together and what have you got?"
"Let's see, pig – male – ion ...pig-male-ion,..oh my God, Pygmalion?" Frank blurted out.
"Now you got it, Pygmalion. The king of Cyprus who loved a statue of Aphrodite so much that he brought it to life. This," I said motioning to the girl, "is my statue, the shell that Yurgo promised me, and I am going to bring her back to life with Claire's memories."
