What if Desti went to a different kind of summer camp?

It had been that tall mushrooms idea to send her here. To Whispering Rock Summer Camp to try and make some friends. It looked unassuming from the outside but as she got past the gate she saw a similar sign with a new word added.

"Whispering Rock PSYCHIC Summer Camp?" She asked looking at the sign a bit too attentively before she felt a presence behind her. She turned around pulling out nothing since the rule was no outside weapons but something still fired knocking a kid off his feet.

"Ow, when did you learn PSI-Blast? You have no training?!" The kid whined sitting up.

"And how do you know that?" She asked angrily.

"Never seen you at camp before now." He said glowering at her. She took a minute to think.

"I mean that makes sense." She admitted before walking to the gathering area where the councilors were doing initial meet and greets. There were three people there though she swears she saw at least a fourth a few seconds earlier. She shrugged it off as she met Mr. Sasha Nein, Ms. Milla Vodello, and Mr. Coach Oleander.

"You must be Desti." Milla said with a warm smile that made her feel at ease. "Welcome to Camp Whispering Rock we hope you enjoy your time with us."

"Thanks Ms. Vodello." Desti said as she moved on feeling what felt like someone trying to poke around in her head but not getting very far. She looked around and saw a guy at about twice her height look away from her.

'Wonder what's his deal?' She thought to herself before feeling her mind being poked again.

"Yes?" She ask turning to look at the boy who jumped a bit but looked uneasy.

"I've never seen someone like you before, where are you from?" The boy managed out rubbing the back of his neck. She felt less annoyed than she had been if only because he probably didn't get out much.

"I originally come from the Inkopolis area, though as of now I'm from the Mushroom Kingdom." She admitted rubbing the back of her neck feeling weird saying that to him.

"I've heard of the mushroom kingdom, inkopolis? Not so much. Is it across the ocean?" He asked a bit of hesitation in his voice.

"Yeah..." she replied confused.

"That's probably why... though hopefully if all goes well this summer I'll be able to tour the world like my brother." He said a twinge of jealousy hitting his voice.

"What you guys weren't cursed to die in water were you?" She says offhandedly but saw the boy flinch. "Oh, I'm sorry I shouldn't've said that..."she said trying to backpedal. 'Good going, now you've probably made him hate you.' She chastised herself.

"It's ok you didn't know... I should probably introduce myself, I'm Dion, Dion Aquato." He said extending a hand to her. She looked at her and took his hand to shake. "You can call me Desti... I don't have a last name... officially." She muttered the last part.

"Well Desti, welcome to camp." He said with a smile that caught her breath.

'I think I just fell in love...' she thought to herself.

'Welcome to the club.' She heard in her head as she caught a glimpse of a younger girl smiling knowingly at her. 'I think it's a feature of the park.' The girl thought walking off.

Dion gently poked her mind snapping her back to the awkward pause between them. "You know you could clear your throat." She snarked gently with a small smirk.

"Sorry my parents taught me to not do that when talking to girls. They say it was rude." He admitted rubbing his neck again. She giggled.

"It's ok, every family is different. You said your brother came to this camp? For what?" She said having remembered what he told her.

"Did you not read the pamphlet?" He asked a bit surprised.

"No? I didn't even know there was one." She said feeling like this camp was going to be a pyramid scheme of some kind.

"Well this is a camp to help train the newest recruits into a secret government group of psychics." He summarized. "My brother suck into here last year and in less than 48 hours became an agent." He said a bit proud.

"Ok now that's impressive hussle. How old was he?" She asked expecting at least maybe not too young.

"Ten." He admitted "he was always a stubborn one." He chuckled as her jaw dropped.

"How?!" She asked aghast at the prospects of how that would work.

"Well we're a family of psychic circus performers." He said looking to the side feeling uncool saying that.

"Dude, what abilities can you do?" She asked a glint of wonder in her eyes.

"In acrobatics or psychic?" He asked shocked someone didn't care about his background.

"Both?" She asked shrugging.

"Ok... I can show you if you follow me." He said wanting to take her hand but settled on her following him.

Both felt the hurt that that caused.
