Chapter 56
Finn's POV
Pregnant.
The word slams into me like a freight train. I didn't know. She never told me. Why didn't she tell me? Was she going to? Was she scared? Confused? Questions whirl, each one more painful than the last. She was carrying our child, and now... I can't even process it.
I feel my legs give out beneath me, and I collapse back into the chair, my head spinning. I didn't know. I didn't fucking know. The weight of it all crashes over me like a tidal wave. The fear, the grief, the overwhelming sense of loss—not just for Lily, but for the child I never even knew existed.
As I stand there, trying to process everything, it suddenly clicks into place. Everything makes sense now. The way she'd been distant last week, how she'd seemed off but brushed it off when I asked. She must have just found out... and didn't know how to tell me.
God, why didn't I see it? Why didn't I push her to talk to me?
The realization is like a sucker punch to the gut, and my legs finally give out beneath me. But before I hit the floor, Lily's mom is there, her arms around me, holding me firm.
"I've got you," she whispers, her voice cracking with grief but steady, grounding me in the moment before turning back to the doctor.
"Just tell us she's going to be okay."
The doctor nods solemnly. "We're doing everything we can. She's stable for now, but the next 24 hours are critical. We need to monitor her closely for any signs of complications."
He hesitates, and I can see the words he's not saying. "Though...," he starts, looking unsure.
"Though WHAT?" I yell, my patience gone, my fear turning to anger. "Just fucking say it."
The doctor clears his throat, his face turning serious.
"Her body's shut down and placed her in a coma. The trauma from the accident and the surgery was too much for it to handle. We don't know when she'll wake up. Right now, we need to give her time and hope for the best."
The room falls into a heavy silence, his words settling like a heavy stone in my gut. Kam and Jen's sobs turn to quiet whimpers, their pain filling the too-bright, too-empty space.
My legs feel weak again, but I force myself to stay upright, gripping the back of a chair. My girl is in a coma. The thought slices through me, leaving me reeling, lost.
Shawn rubs Kam's back, his face a mask of pain as he tries to comfort her.
"It's going to be okay," he murmurs, but even he sounds like he's trying to convince himself.
My whole body feeling like it's been weighed down with lead. I don't know how to feel, what to think. All I know is that I need to see her, to hold her hand, to tell her I'm here. That I'm not going anywhere. That I'll be here when she wakes up.
If she wakes up.
I push the thought away, refusing to entertain it. She has to wake up. She has to. Because I can't lose her. Not now. Not after everything. Not after this.
"How long?" I ask, my voice barely more than a whisper. "How long will she be like this?"
The doctor shakes his head, a look of regret on his face.
"It's impossible to say. It could be days, weeks, or even longer. We just have to wait and see."
My heart sinks. All I can do now is hope and pray that Lily is strong enough to fight her way back to me.
******
Hours pass, but it feels like a lifetime. I sit by Lily's bedside in the ICU, the rhythmic beeping of the machines the only sound in the otherwise quiet room. The sterile smell of antiseptic burns my nose, and the dim lighting casts long shadows on the walls. I stare at Lily, willing her to wake up, to open her eyes, to give me any sign that she's still here with me.
She looks so fragile.
Her face is pale, almost ghostly, and the bruises on her skin stand out in stark contrast. Tubes and wires are attached to her, machines monitoring her every breath, every heartbeat. I reach out, my hand trembling, and gently take hers in mine. Her skin is cold, but I can still feel the faint pulse beneath my fingertips.
"I'm here, Lily," I whisper, my voice rough from exhaustion and emotion. "I'm not going anywhere. I need you to come back to me, okay? Always and forever."
The words feel empty, echoing in the room like a desperate plea. I lean back in the chair, my head in my hands, trying to hold it together.
But the truth is, I'm falling apart. I can't stop thinking about the baby—the baby I didn't even know existed until it was too late. A child we lost before we could even love it. The weight of that realization is crushing, and it makes it hard to breathe.
I glance at the door when I hear it creak open. Kam and Jen walk in, their eyes swollen from crying. Shawn and Kai trail behind them, looking equally worn down by the weight of everything that's happened. Shawn approaches the bed, and his gaze softens as he looks at Lily.
"Come on, little sis," he whispers, "wake up now, and I'll show you all the embarrassing pictures of Finn when he was a kid. You know, the ones of him in that tiara and tutu."
A small, choked laugh escapes from Kam, breaking the tension. Jen's lips twitch, and even Kai lets out a soft chuckle.
"She's strong, Finn," Jen says quietly walking over to me, trying to sound hopeful, but I can hear the tremor in her voice. "She'll wake up. She just needs time."
I nod, swallowing hard, trying to push back the despair threatening to swallow me whole.
"I know," I whisper, squeezing Lily's hand a little tighter. "I just... I wish I could do something. Anything."
Lily's mom and sister come in a few minutes later, their faces drawn and tired. They've been back and forth with the doctors. I can see the strain in their eyes – the exhaustion.
Her sister stands beside her, silent tears streaming down her face. She doesn't say anything, just watches Lily with a look of such deep sorrow that it twists something inside me. I know that look. It's the look of someone who feels utterly helpless, who would do anything to change what's happening but can't.
I look back at Lily, my eyes stinging with tears that I refuse to let fall.
"You promised me forever," I say softly, my voice cracking. "And I'm going to hold you to that, Lily. You're not leaving me. Not now. Not ever."
The room falls silent again, and we all stand there, watching, waiting, hoping. The minutes tick by, each one feeling like an eternity. I don't know how long we stand there, or when the others finally leave to give us some space, but eventually, it's just me and Lily again.
I lean closer, pressing my forehead to our joined hands, closing my eyes against the onslaught of emotions threatening to overwhelm me.
"I love you," I whisper, my voice raw. "Please, come back to me."
I stand up from Lily's bedside, feeling like I'm moving through molasses. My legs are stiff, my muscles sore from sitting in the same position for so long.
I press a soft kiss to her forehead, brushing a stray hair away from her face. "I'll be back," I whisper to her. "I'm not going anywhere."
I turn to leave the room, but I hesitate at the door, looking back at her one last time. Her chest rises and falls steadily now, a small miracle after everything she's been through. I take a deep breath, trying to gather my strength, when I hear a soft voice behind me.
"Finn."
I turn to see Lily's mom standing just outside the doorway, her face lined with exhaustion but her eyes warm. She's been through so much— the fear of losing her daughter, must be overwhelming. Yet, somehow, she still manages to keep herself composed.
"Mrs. Garcia ... I mean Elena " I say, my voice strained. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
She steps forward, placing a gentle hand on my arm.
"It's okay, Finn," she says softly. "I've been here for a while, just watching. I wanted to talk to you."
I nod, swallowing hard. "Of course," I reply, my heart heavy. "What is it?"
She takes a deep breath, her eyes flickering to Lily's sleeping form.
"I want you to know how much Lily loves you," she begins, her voice thick with emotion. "She talked about you all the time. Before the accident, she told me she finally found what she's been looking for—her epic love."
I feel a lump form in my throat, and I try to swallow it down, but it's no use. Tears prick at my eyes, but I blink them away, focusing on her words.
"Her epic love?" I ask softly, my voice barely above a whisper.
Mrs. Garcia nods, a small smile touching her lips despite the sadness in her eyes.
"Ever since she was a little girl, Lily dreamed of finding the kind of love her father and I had. She wanted something big, something all-consuming, something that would make her feel alive. I was always worried she'd set her expectations too high, that she'd never find someone who could live up to that."
She pauses, looking at me with a softness that cuts right through me. "But then she met you, and everything changed. She told me you were her epic love, Finn. The one she'd been waiting for."
My breath catches in my throat, and I feel my heart twist in my chest.
"I love her so much," I say, my voice breaking. "I just want her to be okay. I just want her back."
Elena squeezes my arm gently, her eyes full of understanding.
"I know you do, Finn. And I see it. The way you've been here, day in and day out, never giving up on her. You've given her something so precious, something I wasn't sure she'd ever find. You've given her that epic love she always dreamed of."
Tears spill over, and I don't bother wiping them away. I'm too tired, too broken to hold them back any longer.
"I'm scared," I admit, my voice barely a whisper. "I'm so scared I'm going to lose her."
She nods, her own eyes glistening with tears.
"I know. But you've given her something to fight for. And I believe, with all my heart, that she's going to come back to you. Because she's your epic love, too."
I take a deep breath and nod, steeling myself, and step into the hallway leaning against the cold wall.
I run a hand through my hair, my thoughts a tangled mess of worry and what-ifs. The past few hours have felt like a lifetime. I close my eyes, trying to steady my breathing, when I hear soft footsteps approaching.
I look up to see Kam standing there, her face drawn with exhaustion but her eyes steady. She gives me a small, tired smile and comes to stand next to me, leaning against the wall.
"Hi," she says softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey," I reply, my voice rough. We stand there in silence for a few moments, the weight of everything hanging heavy in the air. I finally break the silence, my voice filled with a mix of frustration and confusion.
"Did you know?" I ask, my eyes fixed on the floor. "About the pregnancy?"
Kam takes a deep breath, her shoulders slumping slightly. "Yeah," she admits, her voice soft but steady.
"Jen and I both knew. We were there when she found out. She was so scared, Finn. She didn't know how to tell you and wasn't even sure what she was going to do."
I feel a sting in my chest, a mixture of pain and betrayal. "Why didn't she tell me?" I ask, my voice breaking. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"She begged us not to," Kam says, her eyes filling with tears. "She wanted to tell you herself, but she needed time to figure things out. She was going to tell you, Finn. She just... she didn't get the chance."
I swallow hard, trying to push back the tears that are threatening to spill over. I want to be angry, but all I feel is an overwhelming sadness. Sadness for what we've lost, for what could have been.
"I should've known," I whisper, more to myself than to Kam. "I should've been there for her."
Kam reaches out, placing a comforting hand on my arm.
"You couldn't have known, Finn. Lily was just... she was trying to protect you. She didn't want to worry you until she knew what she wanted to do."
I nod, feeling a tear slip down my cheek. I quickly wipe it away, but Kam sees. "It's okay to be upset," she says gently. "It's okay to feel everything you're feeling. We all are. This has been hard on everyone, but especially on you."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "Thank you," I murmur, my voice barely a whisper.

Two Weeks Later
The hospital walls are all too familiar now, a blur of white paint and muted lighting that has become the backdrop of my existence. Every day feels like an endless repeat of the last, waiting for a sign, a miracle, anything to pull Lily back to me.
I'm sitting in the chair by Lily's bedside, my fingers entwined with hers, when I hear the knock on the door. I look up, startled, to see two police officers standing there, their faces serious. My heart kicks up a notch.
"Finn Brookes?" one of them asks, his voice steady but with an edge of urgency.
I nod, slowly untangling my hand from Lily's. "Yeah, that's me."
The officer steps into the room, glancing at Lily's mom, Elena, who's sitting quietly in the corner, her eyes swollen from lack of sleep. "We need you to come with us to the station," he says, his tone leaving no room for argument. "We believe we've found the driver responsible for the hit-and-run."
For a moment, I just stare at him, the words not fully sinking in. Then, like a dam breaking, everything rushes back: the blood on the pavement, Lily's motionless body on the floor, her head cradled in my arms and her body so cold.
I swallow hard, trying to keep my composure.
"Are you sure?" I manage to ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
The officer nods. "We have him in custody, but we need your help to confirm a few things. Can you come with us?"
I glance back at Lily, her face peaceful in her sleep, and then at Elena, who nods encouragingly. "Go, Finn," she says softly. "Find out who did this."
I stand, my legs feeling like lead, and follow the officers out of the room. As we walk, my mind drifts to Rachel. She's been working with the police, digging through her online forums, tracing every lead. It was her anger, her impulsive rant to some stranger on the internet that inadvertently set this all in motion.
She had no idea the guy she was venting to would take her words literally, that he'd hurt Lily just to get closer to Rachel. She's been torn apart by guilt, using every scrap of information we could find to help the police track him down.
When we reach the station, Shawn already there, his face set in a grim line.
"You okay," he asks quietly, his hand gripping my shoulder. I nod, my jaw tight, needing this to end. Kam stands next to him; she knows she has to give her statement. Jen couldn't stomach facing the suspect but Kam on the other hand is ready.
The officers lead us into a room with a one-way mirror. Behind it, the man who nearly destroyed my life sits, looking smug, like he's proud of what he's done. Rage flares inside me, hot and uncontrollable. I break free from Shawn's grip and burst into the room.
"You son of a bitch!" I yell, my fist slamming into his jaw. He doesn't even flinch.
Instead, he grins, his eyes cold. "I did it for Rachel," he says, eerily calm. "She wanted that slut out of the way."
His words make me see red. I swing again, feeling the crunch of bone against my knuckles and smirk, but the police pull me back before I can do more damage.
"Enough, Finn!" one officer shouts, holding me back. "Do it again, and we'll have to arrest you."
I'm panting, my body trembling with rage and frustration.
Another officer steps in, his voice low and steady. "We'll make sure he pays for what he's done. Just take a breath."
I nod, taking a shaky breath, my gaze still locked on the man who shattered my world.
He took my unborn child from me and has my girl fighting for her life every fucking day.
All I know is, he better be locked up for a long time, before I do something I know I will not regret.
