Midnight Swan [CE]

7-month hiatus this time...oopsie. What better way to make a comeback than by joining a Kato contest? :P

For this contest, we were given a resource we had to integrate into our piece. The brief was simple, make a poster (movie, character, etc.) using the resource provided and adhere to the provided dimensions and style. The resource I received was a 3D render of a person in a toga.

Working with the featured resource proved to be a real challenge this time. Normally I don't construct the MC from scratch, so this was an interesting challenge. I ended up replacing the legs, head and torso. The arms I kept the same so as not to stray from the main task of the challenge. Hence, my main focus was ensuring the chest area and arms looked cohesive, coupled with the head swap. Spent a good bit of time drawing in the skin in that area. A headache that was. The arms of the 3d render were too hench, so tried my best to give them a more ballerina form, not necessarily feminine but a gymnastic physique.

The most enjoyable part for me was drawing in the hair, quite happy with the results tbh.

I also worked a lot on the lighting to give that magical moonlight effect to the ballerina.

As for the ribbon, I drew the vector myself on illustrator, moved it to PS, added gradient effect and some motion blur and that did the trick.

Overall, loved challenging myself with this piece. Hope you liked reading my thought process behind it :)
