My Brother Died

Hermia

Friday mornings are usually the worst for me because the most uninteresting subject in the world is my first class.

I glanced through my schedule and sighed.

"Fuck History. "

I threw a few books into my backpack and closed my locker once I was done.

"Hey, Hermia. "

I turned around in an attempt to locate the voice and then I discovered it was Alex.

Oh, I never showed up at the date. I felt a bit guilty. Poor guy must've been stood up all night expecting me.

Obverse to my expectations, he was grinning at me.

"Hey. Sorry man. " I apologized sincerely. "I never showed up. "

His eyebrows quirked then he chuckled. "Oh that. It's fine. Have you seen Sally around? "

I was taken aback. "Sa-lly? Well, we haven't talked since morning. Why? "

I could swear on my life I caught him blush just now even as he averted my gaze.

"Wait. " I leaned in and watched his every reactions. "Did you guys do something? "

Alex's eyes widened confirming my suspicion. They had something going on.

"Well, Hermia. I really need to talk to her. I haven't seen her since morning. Did she tell you anything? "

I raised my eyebrows. "About?"

"Why she's avoiding me, " he replied, a note of sadness in his voice.

"Nope but I'll see if I could get something out of her. "

We did the bro-hug thing and he walked away to his locker.

I was going to class when I stopped to think of what might be going on. I ditched the date and expected him to be upset or even confront me but he's asking of Sally happily. The same Sally I had a fight with over the weekends and hadn't made it up to?

"What the heck is going on between them? "

-

"Good day class! " the History teacher announced whilst stepping out of the class.

I rolled my eyes. It wasn't like I'm a fan of her class and I don't still understand why History is compulsory because it's boring!

I plucked my pods in my ears and packed my notes into my backpack. I didn't bother about the homework on the board whatever.

The new agenda I had was to find Sally wherever she was and talk to her.

Hermia: Hey Sally. Can we talk?
10:05 am

Hermia: Are you in school?
10:07 am

Hermia: Can we talk? Please?
10:08 am

I dropped my phone in my pocket and then entered my next class. Literature.

Haven settles down, I glanced through my messages to see that she viewed my messages but didn't reply. Is she still upset about what I said?

Hermia: Still upset?
10:15 am

Her last seen was five minutes ago. I sighed and decided to listen to the teachings.

Occasionally, I discreetly glanced at my phone from under the desk.

"Mrs Jones? "

I raised my gaze to meet Mrs. Ally's.

"Would you please answer the question? "

I looked around to see if it was on the board. "What question?"

"The poem 'Bat'. Can you explain how irony is used? "

I groaned and rolled my eyes. She had to find me of all people to ask that question.

I was about to say something when my phone buzzed.

I had to glance at it to see why and then I was surprised to see it's Sally's call.

"I repeat. In the poem, can you explain-"

"Shit. " I muttered then looked up at the teacher. "Sorry. I gotta go. "

I caught the dropping of her jaw but didn't wait for her approval before storming out of the class in hope Sally doesn't hang up before I get out.

"Don't hang up. Don't hang up. " I repeated over and over and sighed when I got to the hallway when she didn't.

My finger fiddled on the 'pickup' icon.

"Sally! Where the heck are you! " I yelled, panting heavily as a result of the mini sprint.

I collapsed against the wall and waited for her to talk but I heard nothing.

"Hey, say something. I'm sorry for the last time okay? And I'm super worried. For the first time you never showed up at school and left no message as well. Alex was asking of you-"

I heard a sharp intake of breath. "My brother died. " she said as quickly as ever.

My jaw dropped in disbelief and horror filled my thoughts.

"W-What? " I muttered sliding down the wall to the cold floor.

I could hear her mom's sobbing underground lamenting why Joseph left them so soon.

"Sally? Is this. . .?"

"Yes. It happened last night and. . . We are with the police right now. "

"Police. . . " I slid down to the floor. "Is everything okay? "

"It was an accident. Hermia, I. . . " her voice sounded croaked. "I'll send an address. Can you please come? This might be the last time we talk. Please?"

My chest tightened oddly. "Don't say that, Sally. You're my best friend you know that? " I rambled in panic.

"Yea, " her voice sounded distant.

I had no idea what to say to calm her down except- "Everything will be fine. "

"I wish. " and the next I heard is sobs. "Please come. "

The call ended and I sat there on the cold hallway floor in shock. I never expected this.

My phone pinged as a notification just came. I clicked on it and saw it's the address she sent.

A!N: I'm sure no one expected this. Sorry guys, but this is important.

R. I. P Joseph

Do you think of a reason Alex was eagerly asking of Sally?

And who do you think killed Sally's brother.

Oh my, you'd be literally shocked.

Quick reminder: it costs nothing to hit the star at that edge ❤
