Chapter 7: Reasons

Sorry for the...slight...angst everybody. It will all be fine ^_^ Also the pic is kind of what I imagine the hospital looks like. Enjoy!

Tamaki went with you to the hospital which was luckily just a short subway ride away. In one of her voicemails, you mom gave you the hospital's address even though you and her had been there multiple times. When you told that to Tamaki, he looked shocked.

"You mean this has happened to your sister b-before!?" He asked, his dark eyes blown wide. You two had just left the train station and you could already see the towering hospital building a few blocks away.

"Kyoko...she's never had the best health. Even when she was born I remember that she had to stay in the nicu for almost a week and half. But the truth is...we don't know what's wrong with her. The only thing mom and I know is that we can't afford all of her medical treatment. The government pays seventy percent of her expenses but thirty percent is still a lot!"

"Y/n...I'm so sorry. I-If I knew about this...I could've--"

"Tamaki! Don't you dare blame yourself! There's nothing either of us can really do...I'm already doing as much as I can as it is..."

Your voice broke off and you two approached the hospital in silence. But before you went through the doors, you have Tamaki a pained smile. "Thank you for coming with me though. I-It means a lot."

"O-Of course y/n."

With that you two went through the automatic doors and headed towards the help desk. "Hi do you know where Ms. L/n is. She's my mom...she's here with my little sister."

"Ah...Kyoko?" The woman asked, her eyes looking over at her computer screen.

"Yes."

"Your mom's in waiting room three, that's upstairs on the second floor."

"Do you know if Kyoko is a-alright?" You asked her, your voice cracking slightly. Without thinking, you reached down and clutched Tamaki's hand in yours. He didn't pull away. He was your anchor for now.

"I'm sorry I don't know." The woman said. "The doctors will know more."

That figures...they love keeping secrets, you thought.

"Ok thanks." You said, and with that you and Tamaki walked over to the elevators. Tamaki squeezed your hand gently, showing his support.

"Y/n...I-I have to ask," Tamaki started, as the elevator doors opened and you two walked in, "is Kyoko the reason you are going to U.A. H-High?"

Your heart sank. You didn't want Tamaki to think that your reasons for wanting to be a hero were selfish. The elevator reached the second floor but you stopped walking down the hallway and let go of Tamaki's hand. He needed to know just why you were at U.A. High, even if he judged you for it.

"T-Tamaki...you're right. I am at U.A. for Kyoko." you said. "And I know that heroes help people and save lives...and it might not be the best reason right now...but for now I just want to save my sister. If I become pro I'll make a lot of money which I'll use for her treatment and that might be selfish since I'm not really thinking about other people or citizens or whatever...but it's my priority now. I have to become a hero for my family!"

Your voice rang loudly throughout the hallway, but you didn't care. You just cared about what Tamaki thought.

"Y/n...I think that's amazing. You don't have to have a perfect reason to be a hero right now. We're all still learning and growing and helping your sister like that...well if that's not heroic then what is?" Tamaki said, his black eyes meeting yours and for a moment his nervous personality was replaced with someone so intense and serious that you felt like you were standing near the sun.

You looked away, a genuine smile pulling at your lips. "T-Thank you Tamaki. You really have a way with words."

"N-Not really!"

There's the old Tamaki!

You chuckled at him and breathed out. It was time. You and Tamaki walked over to waiting room three, both of you preparing yourselves for whatever was ahead. Your mom sat alone in one of the seats near the help desk, her eyes red and puffy. She didn't even seem to notice you walk up to her. You placed a gentle hand on her shoulder and her eyes widened in realization.

"M-Mom. I'm here." you told her quietly. Without hesitating she wrapped her arms around you and patted down your hair.

"Oh y/n. I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I feel like we were just here." she said.

"How is she?"

"She's fine! The doctors told me she's stable, but having visitors right now wouldn't be wise. Oh y/n...they're still not telling me anything. They don't know why this happening, they don't have the first idea!" your mom said, fire returning in her eyes. That was when she realized you weren't alone. "Who's this? Are you a U.A. student too."

"Y-Yes ma'am. I-I'm Ta...Tamaki Amajiki. I was training with y/n before."

"It's nice of you to come Amajiki. You didn't have to." your mom said, giving him a half-hearted smile.

"He's the reason I knew to come here. He heard my phone buzzing." you said, giving Tamaki a quick wink. Your mom nodded in understanding before Tamaki began to speak.

"I-I wanted to come t-too. What kind of friend would I be i-if I didn't?" he said, his fists clenching at his sides.

"That's true Amajiki. Thank you for caring for y/n. Do you want to sit? You too y/n." your mom asked, motioning to the two empty seats next to her. You felt blood rush to your cheeks at your mom's comment, and you wished that the hospital lighting wasn't so bright. But surprisingly, Tamaki didn't seem to mind or he just didn't take note of her comment.

"Y-Yes please." Tamaki said. You sat next to your mom and Tamaki sat next to you.

"If we end up waiting too long I'll be happy to drive you home Amajiki. Do your parents know where you are?"

"T-They're not expecting me until five...it's f-fine."

"Alright."

With that, you three sat in the bright waiting room in relative silence. The only sounds were of the bustling nurses who ignored you all. Soon you found yourself dozing off.

...

"Y/n...wake up. Y/n?"

Tamaki's soft voice pulled you from your little nap, and you wondered where you had gotten the pillow your head was leaning on. It was so comfy.

"What's going on?" you mumbled, tilting your head to the side. Your lips brushed against skin and you heard Tamaki gasp. That was when your eyes adjusted and you realized that you didn't have a pillow. Your head was resting comfortably on Tamaki's shoulder, but he made no move to try and shake you off despite the deep red blush on his cheeks.

You were so close to his face, his dark eyelashes looking more prominent than ever. Your face probably looked just as flushed as his, but like him you didn't move.

"You fell asleep on m-me...but I just wanted to t-tell you that your sister's a-awake. Your mom went into her room already."

Your head shot up immediately. "Kyoko! What room?"

"Two ten."

You practically flew out of your seat, your drowsiness wearing off completely. "Did you want to come?"

"I-If that's ok..."

"Yes!"

"Ok."

Down the hallway you two went, past the nurses, doctors, and other patients. You two reached Kyoko's room, and you strode in without hesitating. Kyoko needed to know that you were strong, and that you would continue to be strong for her.

She was still lying in the hospital bed, her face pale and her eyes drooping low. The bed seemed to swallow her whole.

Her large eyes moved towards you and she grinned.

"I lived moron."

"I'm glad!" You replied, taking a seat next to her bed.

"Who're you?" Kyoko asked Tamaki. He gave her a small smile and said he was your friend from U.A. High.

"U.A. huh? My sister's gonna kick your ass in the sports festival."

You burst out laughing, and your mother shushed Kyoko quickly. "Don't say that so coldly Kyoko." She scolded.

"What? It's true."

Your worries about Kyoko disappeared little by little as she continued to bicker with your mom. Everyone else at the hospital seemed to melt away, until it just felt like you, Tamaki, your mom, and Kyoko were the only people there.

Everything had gone back to normal. Or as normal as they could be for you.
