02. Don't Be A Stranger
TWO DON'T BE A STRANGER
"This is the year, I can feel it," Heloise exclaimed as the two girls boarded the Hogwarts Express ahead of their sixth year at the WIzarding school. "Something amazing is gonna happen, like a great romance or something!"
"I think you've been watching too much Romeo and Juliet," Eurydice chided with a laugh as her and her best friend took their seats in anticipation of the train leaving. They were a little early, they always were since Heloise was such a freak about never wanting to be late for anything, but it kept Eurydice in check so she didn't mind it all that much.
"I just think Claire Danes is pretty!" Heloise exclaimed with a laugh as she laid back against the seat, "Where's your boy? He usually comes to say hi before going off with Ron and Hermione."
Eurydice laughed outwardly at that, "Oh, please! He's not my boy, he's hardly even spoken to me since we left for the summer holidays. I think I got one letter from him, that's it! I royally screwed up last year and now I've ruined one of the only two friendships I've got!"
"You freak out so much over nothing," Heloise scoffed, "Is a kiss really that big of a deal? We kiss all the time."
"It's different we're girls and you know I'm not interested," the girl teased as she moved to sit next to her best friend instead of across from her, leaning her head on the blonde's shoulder while the other began to play with her dark locks. "Besides, it wasn't even like a little peck or anything, it was a kiss. A great one at that, or at least, I thought. It made me feel so alive until he pulled the friends bullshit. I mean, I obviously respect the decision, but Jesus I didn't think it was going to be so hard."
"We need to stop talking about boys, we have better things to worry about than the likes of Potter," Heloise scoffed, "Have you heard anything about the new D.A.D.A professor? After Umbridge's disappearance, they haven't uttered a word about her replacement. I swear, we get a new professor for that blasted class every year. Ridiculous! Just a little bit of consistency is all I ask for!"
Eurydice scoffed, "You're ridiculous. We'll probably find out at dinner tonight. God, I missed the food, I can't wait to eat."
"You always say that and then you have one piece of bread and head up to the dormitory," Heloise shook her head, pushing the girl off of her playfully while the two chatted. There was a knock on the door of the train compartment and it slid open while Luna Lovegood stuck her head in. Eurydice didn't know the girl well and it was commonly known that she was, well... a little odd, but Eurydice never saw that as a reason to dislike someone. So, she didn't really have any problems with Luna.
"Quibbler?" the light-blonde-haired girl offered with a small smile as she held a stack of magazines. Eurydice nodded.
"Yes, please!" the dark-haired girl exclaimed as she stood up and grabbed one of the magazines, "How was your summer, Luna?"
The girl smiled like no one had asked her that yet, handing over the magazine before saying, "Oh, it was lovely. Lots of adventures to open my mind's eye, how was yours?"
"Probably not as interesting, but just as good," Eurydice said with a smile as the girl bid her goodbyes and carried onto the rest of the compartments. When the raven-haired girl closed the door and leaned against it, she looked up to meet Heloise who was looking at her like she was crazy. "What! I love Luna, she's an angel. Don't be so judgy!"
"I'm not judging!" Heloise defended herself, although her raised eyebrow and perplexed expression had made it clear enough, "I feel like we can accept the fact that she's a little weird. That's common knowledge!"
Eurydice just rolled her eyes, a small smile playing across her features, "That doesn't mean she isn't deserving of kindness."
The teenager hummed to herself as she flipped through the magazine. She usually brought her own reading for the train, but it would probably be a nice break for when she needed to take a step back from whatever she was reading. With a content look on her face, she closed the magazine and placed it onto the seat next to her, opting to grab her own book out of the small bag she always brought on the train with her. After a moment of quiet silence in which Heloise had pulled out her own book, the blonde huffed loud enough to get her friend's attention.
"What are you on about now?" the girl asked with a chastising laugh as she looked over at her best friend who was clearly trying to catch her eye.
"I just think you should go say hi to Harry," Heloise spoke matter-of-factly. "I mean, you'll never know if you don't try."
"Try what? Being civil?" Eurydice chuckled to herself as she brought her eyes back down to her book, fully intending to read, but her mind refused to pick up the words on the pages. Harry had been weirdly quiet over the summer and from what she remembered they weren't on bad terms. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to go say hello and ask how his summer was.
"I'll buy you a chocolate frog if you do it," the blonde exclaimed after a moment, staring at her best friend with her eyebrows raised expectantly. She nodded towards the door and Eurydice sighed, placing her bookmark in the split between the pages before slamming it shut and placing it on top of where the magazine rested.
Standing up, she brushed off the clothes she was wearing -- having not changed into her robes yet. She just had her sweater on with the button up underneath, but no tie and with jeans instead of her skirt. She didn't mind skirts, but she wasn't going to sit in one for hours on end if she didn't have to. With a groan, she slid open the door to the train compartment, glaring at her best friend as she went. Heloise, of course, flashed a smile and a thumbs-up before the door slid shut. As soon as she stepped out, she saw Ginny Weasley standing with Dean Thomas as the two were heading to their compartment.
"Ah, Ginny!" she called out to grab the ginger's attention. Ginny was the year below them, but the two got along pretty well. It helped that they never brought up the fact that they both had utterly hopeless crushes on Harry. Still, neither of them seemed to be the jealous type. After all, it wasn't like Harry belonged to either of them. She might even consider Ginny a friend. "Do you know which compartment Harry's in? I meant to say hello, but I didn't get a chance to catch him on the platform."
"Ah, yeah, just down at the end," Ginny pointed with a smile, "Did you cut your hair? I could have sworn it was longer last year?"
"Ah, yes, it's a long story involving a hex my older brother cast that I got in the way of," Eurydice brushed off with a laugh, "Long story short, half my hair was burned off."
Ginny laughed at this as the girls walked past each other, "Well, it looks good. The shoulder-length suits you."
"Thanks," Eurydice smiled, giving the girl a side-armed hug, "It's good to see you, I hope you had a good summer."
"Good to see you, too," the redhead returned the sentiment, "and I hope your summer was good as well, hex aside. See you at school."
"Yeah, see you," the girl called as she took off down the hall to where Ginny said Harry was. Part of her was nervous considering her and Harry hadn't talked much over the summer, but then again, this was Harry. They had been friends since their third year and acquaintances long before that, saying hello was nothing. Easy, even."
As she got to the last train compartment, she knocked on the door, waiting until it slid open to reveal Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Eurydice smiled at Hermione first who got up and pulled her into a hug before she could even say anything.
"Oh, Eurydice! I missed you!" Hermione exclaimed, "I swear, I've been needing another girl around, these two are driving me crazy. Are you joining us? Is Heloise around?"
"Oh, no, sorry, I've got my own compartment just down the way," she explained, "I just wanted to say hi to everyone before we got to school. Hey, Ron, I caught Ginny on the way. And uh, hey Harry."
There, she had done it. She had accomplished what she was there to do and now she could get out of there. Then, Harry smiled at her and she melted. She needed to get the hell back to her compartment.
"Hey, Di, sorry I didn't send much over the summer," Harry said with a smile, "I like your story about the hex, though, your hair looks nice."
"Uh, yeah, thanks," she coughed out, trying to seem chill and casual, but it most certainly was not working. "Uh, I should be getting back now, but I'll see you around. Uh, don't be a stranger."
They bid her goodbye and she began to walk back down the hallway, muttering to herself, "Don't be a stranger? Fucking stupid, ugh."
"So, how'd it go?" Heloise asked, throwing a chocolate frog at the girl as soon as she sat down.
"I hate you," was all Eurydice offered, but the girl just laughed at her. This year was going to be torture.
