The funeral and the secret

We went to the funeral after eating some waffles WITHOUT chocolate syrup. We were seated in the second row. All of the rebels who weren't in the infirmary attended. The ones seated in the front, according to Aine, were the family and friends of the ones who died. Cynth went in front, where the three caskets were and placed a bouquet on each. She started her speech, "Today we have gathered to honour these three fallen heroes. Lark Miller was a sweet young woman of only twenty-one, a great warrior, and an even better friend. Everybody who had met her loved her. She will sadly never fulfill her dream of being a singer known throughout Theri. Jonathan Staffi was a brave one, though he was a scarred and worn old fellow. He fought for his kingdom to make his children proud, and I'm sure they are. He will join his wife in the stars at long last. Last but not least is Phillippa Mystique-"

Cynth was interrupted by the hysterical sobbing of the woman in front of me who looked to be around twenty. She managed to say in between sobs, "No! Not my-not my Pip! Not my little Pip! It should've-it should've been me!"

A strict-looking woman who looked to be in her thirties who had her hair in a tight bun stepped forward with the intent of shushing the woman but Cynth motioned for her to go back. I had really started to feel that we were in a war. How many people died because of that vile wolf king? And how many more will die? I asked Aine in a whisper, "Is that the older deputy commander?"

She nodded and whispered, "Miliscent." Cynth said to the woman in front, "It's alright Hex, your little sister wouldn't want you to blame yourself for her death. She died bravely, so that the seven kingdoms would be one step closer to being freed. She is one of the bravest witches I've ever known, I'm sure such a spirit like hers will be granted a place in the stars. Philippa was only seventeen but her wisdom and heart far exceeded her age."

Cynth motioned for the caskets to be set on fire and they were. Those in the front row had solemn faces, some even had tears running down their cheeks. I heard the lanky man beside Hex who looked seventeen or eighteen say, "I'm sorry I never told you I loved you, Pippa. Wait for me."

"She loved you too, Thomas. I know it." Hex replied and placed her hand on his shoulder comfortingly.

I hadn't known any of them, but I wish I had. I felt sad and a bit empty. I couldn't imagine how Hex, Thomas, Lark's friends and Jonathan's children felt. They all seemed like wonderful, caring and brave people. I hope and will never stop hoping that their souls will be at peace, though I somehow knew they wouldn't until we took down Channe.

We all stood up and bowed our heads in respect for a final time as Cynth had gestured before leaving. As I walked with Aine towards the kitchen to look for Luna, I told her about everything I saw in my dream. She stopped in her tracks when I mentioned the symbol. She looked at me dead in the eyes and said, "Forget Luna, we need to bring you to Cynth right away!"

We ran all the way to her office and Aine barged right in. Cynth was discussing something with Astoria and Miliscent. Aine burst out, "I'm terribly sorry Commander, but Ashlyn has something very important to report."

Cynth dismissed the deputy commanders and motioned to the chairs in front of her. We sat down and I start to tell her about my dream. Her eyes grew wide when I described the symbol but she let me finish. Once I had finished she took a deep breath and asked, "Could you draw the symbol on this paper?"

I did as I was asked:

"What is it?" I asked.

"That is the royal insignia of the first kingdom, Concordia," Cynth replies.

Aine stares at it as Cynth takes something from a drawer in her desk. She showed me a picture of a man. He looked exactly like the one I saw in my dream, except he wasn't smiling. She asked me in the most serious tone, "Was this the man you saw smiling down at you?"

I nodded. Aine fell to her knees. "What? Why are you on your knees? What does it mean?" I questioned.

"It means, Ashlyn, that you are my cousin," Cynth explains.

"What? How could that be? You must be mistaken!" I exclaim.

"There has been no mistake. That man you saw in your dream was Channe, the evil wolf king. In other words, my uncle. He does not smile to anybody. The cloak you wore when you were three years old had the royal insignia, only royalty are given that at birth. I don't know how I never noticed that you have his exact same blue eyes," she replies.

"Wait, so what does that make me? Like a duchess or something?" I ask.

Aine arches an eyebrow and says, "Really? That's what you're worried about right now?"

Cynth chuckles and says, "It's alright. Your father was a prince, that would make you a princess and second in line for the throne. If I die without having children, you will be the rightful queen."

My eyes grow wide and I plead, "Can you please not die? I wouldn't know how!"

Both of them laugh and Cynth answers, "Don't worry, I don't plan to die anytime soon."

I thought of something, "Wait a minute- since he blocked Wilde, that means that he didn't want me to find out I was his daughter. Why? Would this give us some sort of advantage?"

Cynth nods and says, "In your mother's prophecy, only one who came from Channe would be able to kill him, and you would light the way. You have. I do not understand why she did not just tell us you were meant to kill him."

"Aren't you upset at all that he's my father? He's so-so despicable! Wouldn't I be evil too?" I ask.

A small smile appears on her face and she chuckled, "Ashlyn, just because you came from him, doesn't mean you are him. I'm related to him too, remember? Besides, you haven't even met him! You are a wonderful, brave and sweet young girl. You are nothing like him. I am glad to have you as a cousin."
