The day of my thirteenth birthday started like any other. I woke up, bathed, ate my breakfast and did some chores for the nuns. Right after I finished, Aine walked in and said, "Happy Birthday Ashlyn!"

I grinned and walked towards her saying,"Thanks, did you get me anything?"

"It's a surprise, you have to follow me to find out what it is!" she replied.

"Well let's go already!" I exclaimed, as giddy as a three year old.

We went out through the orphanage's front door and crossed the street. We turned right into a smaller street and continued walking. After what seemed like forever, though it was actually only five minutes, we turned left into an alley.

"What are we doing here Aine?" I ask.

Aine held a finger to her lips and said, "Quiet, she's sleeping." I looked and saw that she was referring to a tiny black kitten asleep in a cardboard box.

"Oh, wow! She's adorable, Aine!" I exclaimed.

Aine nodded and said,"You can keep her if you want, I already talked to the nuns. They said you could keep her if you'll take care of her and pay for the food by doing extra chores. Just to be sure, I asked around if anyone owned her, no one does."

I jumped with joy then gently put the kitten in my arms, it yawned and looked at me with big blue eyes. Aine asked, "Am I the best gift giver or what? What are you gonna name her?"

I laughed and after some thought, said,"I think I'll name her Luna."

We were exiting the alley when I noticed a guy in a black mask behind us. I lean towards Aine and whisper, "Someone's following us, he might be a criminal." Aine raised her eyebrow and her face made an expression I didn't recognize. She suddenly turned around so fast that it sent her long, straight, flaming red hair whipping.

The man took one look at her black eyes and ran away as fast as he could. I looked at Aine and asked,"Why was he scared of you?"

She shrugged and said,"Maybe he thought I was someone else."

I looked back at the direction he ran off to. I couldn't think of a better explanation so I just muttered as we continued walking, "Weird."
