chapter 17

Borno, Maiduguri

Aisha's wushe-wushe

Aidah's POV

Ya Salam, Maiduguri is incredibly cold today—Subhanallah! It's such a refreshing change. Today marks Aicha's exciting wushe wushe, which will take place beautifully at night after Maghreb, inshallah. Tomorrow is going to be even more special, with the wedding Fatiha and the enchanting k3latul (the traditional washing of the bride's hair), followed by the vibrant Kaulu (the traditional dressing and presentation of the bride). The delightful k3latul will happen in the morning, and the elegant Kaulu will follow in the afternoon, culminating in a wonderful dinner at night. It's going to be a whirlwind of joyous celebrations!

I'm currently sitting on the balcony where we're getting our henna done, though Aicha isn't joining us. She's dressed in a stunning traditional red outfit for the Kaulu, while a talented photographer captures amazing shots of her before the event begins. The atmosphere is filled with excitement as we prepare for the celebrations ahead!

The photographer(BigH) came and snapped the bride and her sisters and niece; Ya Ummi, Nadia, my niece, Aaliya and me.

"Aicha, you better be pregnant by Yassine and Aidah's wedding!" said Ya Ummi, which made us all burst into laughter.

"Come on, Ummi," Aicha said, laughing.

Everyone is running around in a frenzy, getting ready for the wushe-wushe, which is starting in less than an hour. We got our hair done earlier on the balcony, and now I'm dressed in a white and orange traditional outfit, a 'dongashau.' The event will take place in the house, inside a beautifully decorated grand marquee, creating a festive atmosphere for the celebration.

Nadia is currently having her hair done by a woman who lives in their house here in Maiduguri, and she's almost finished. "Ya Aidah, please pass me my water," Nadia said. I handed her the water, then stood up and quietly left the room.

The wushe-wushe started an hour ago, and everyone seems to be having a fantastic time. The usual activities are in full swing, and the bride is dressed in a stunning white outfit. It's a Kanuri wushe-wushe infused with a delightful twist of Chadian traditions, creating a vibrant and unique celebration.

The couple is now dancing to ganga-kura while the elders spray money on them. Meanwhile, I've been trying to take a decent picture for almost thirty minutes. I finally managed to snap one just before my phone died, but it didn't turn out great—my mouth was open as I was talking, and Yassine even photo-bombed it!

Wedding fatiha, K3latul and dinner

10;15am

Maryam- Leema, have you guys set the wedding date?

Me- I wanted to march but Ammi said wai yayi kusa da wayawa so they settled on JUNE inshallah Together with Yassine's.

Maryam- Oh okay.....i can't believe you're getting married in 6 months!

Me – Me too!!

Maryam - Allah ya kaimu dai kawai

Me- Ameen!

Maryam- How is Aisha's wedding? I can't believe I'm missing it

Me- it's fun! Although Maiduguri is soooo cold wallahi

Maryam- Eyyah...anyway, I saw Sauda Remawa post Sayyid's picture today. Is it his birthday?

Me- Yes fah, I haven't even wished him yet

Maryam – Bad fiancé. How old is he?

Me – He turned 29

Maryam- Mashallah. Wish him for me okay?

Me- sure xx

Maryam- Ciao! My man needs me

I woke up at nine o'clock but felt too lazy to get out of bed. After some time, I finally mustered the energy to get up and headed to take my bath. I came out after ten minutes, rubbed on some cream, and got dressed in an Ankara skirt and blouse. I tied my scarf and left my room for the main part of the house, where the k3latul is either taking place or about to start. Before leaving, I snapped a mirror selfie and had Yassine take a full picture of me in the corridor.

I met a lot of people on the way and soon grew tired of greeting them all. When I reached the living room, pictures were taken before we headed outside for the main event. The bride was dressed in a stunning red traditional outfit, the name of which I've forgotten! An elderly woman was set to carry the bride on her back and walk around the house once they announce that the knot has been tied.

The k3latul/kaulu event passed in a blur. Aicha Deribe is now officially Mrs. Faisal Bulama!

We're now at Mummy's side, getting ready for dinner with the bride. I'm already dressed in a beautiful blue lace outfit, having my makeup done by Jide. He just finished Aicha's makeup, and now she's snapping pictures with Henry in the living room. Everyone else is already done with their makeup, and I'm the last one to start.

Aicha is dressed in a stunning red fitted Iro and Buba, complete with matching headwear and jewelry. My makeup was finished in no time, but I didn't have a chance to snap any pictures. I quickly grabbed my clutch and headed outside to the car that would take us to the event venue.

Yassine, Mairam, Nadia, and I all piled into the same car, with Mairam driving. We arrived at the event venue in no time, as it wasn't far from our main house. After getting out of the car, we made our way to the entrance, arranged ourselves in pairs behind the couple, and danced into the hall.

We took their seats when they entered. The event started with an opening prayer by Aunty Maryam, Baba's sister. The bride's maid of honor was called to give a speech about Aicha. While Nadia and I were standing at a corner replying to Sayyid's message. I wished him earlier during the day, I also wished Ruqaiya too. Ya Aisha snapped a picture of me when I was talking to Sayyid.

Me- Happy birthday babe. I love you!

SR- Thank you baby am! I love you more.

SR- How are you?

Me- I'm just there! I can't wait for this wedding to be over

I saw a message from Kamilla and checked it ;

Kami Deribe- Look what I've found.

Below the message was a grid of pictures of me and her in our second year in university.

Me- Thank God for growth!! Wait! We don't even look that bad. I mean we were chicks since from day one

Kami Deribe – looool! I know right. Anyway, how's the wedding? I cannot believe I'm missing!!

Me- You are missing a lot kam!

Kami Deribe- I can't wait till you get back to Miami, missing you like a lot..

Me- I can't wait to be there too! I miss it there. Iman bye, ttyl

Kami Deribe- Alright , bye.

The dinner passed in a blur, and now we're all home, feeling exhausted. Tomorrow is the conveyance of the bride, as they'll be taking her to Abuja.

I'm so tired that I can hardly imagine how I'll manage on my own wedding day. Yassine and I are here in my room organizing everything; we're planning to leave at ten o'clock in the morning, inshallah.

I was hanging up the dress I had just removed when I heard my phone ringing. "Yassine, please pass me my phone," I told her, and she obliged.

I checked the caller ID and smiled. "Baby am," came his husky, sexy voice that melted my heart.

''Hey there, noi?''

"Jam, noi sare?" he asked in his sexy Fulani accent.

"Well, home is fine, Alhamdulillah. How's work?" I asked, sitting down at the edge of the bed.

"Work is hectic as usual," he sighed, clearly exhausted.

"You're not resting like you should," I said.

"God, baby, I miss you so much. I can't wait until you get back," he said, his voice husky and heart-melting.

"I miss you too, babe. I'll be back tomorrow, inshallah," I replied. I really do miss him, truly.

After we finished talking, I said goodnight and switched off the lights. I recited my dua, pulled up my duvet, and drifted off to sleep.
