Foxpaw's Hero

Foxpaw's hero: Foxpaw speaks

Foxpaw: When the storm rolled around and flooded camp, I was horrified. My best friend, Frozenpaw, assured me that I was going to be okay, but when Winter Skies brought news of death, I couldn't take it. I wished I'd never run away from my kittypet home.

Redpaw, my sister, agreed. We should have never joined GreenClan. But we left camp with the rest of the clan, nonetheless, and went with them to find shelter. The rain beat down so hard that it hurt. I was tired and aching by the time we arrived at the MudClan camp, soaked in water. The storm didn't seemed to bother Frozenpaw at all. I admired her courage, feeling hot under my fur despite how cold the air was.

"What is this?" Dragonstar growled, his fur bristling.

"We need shelter. Our camp has flooded.. Help us, Dragonstar, please." Stormstar pleaded, his long grey fur clinging to his body. I was glad that my fur was short, or else I would hate the rain too.

Dragonstar's gaze softened. "Come in."

MudClan cats glared at the newcomers with fear in their eyes. Winter Skies rushed forward, nearly knocking Tigerstripe over as he hurried to a ledge jutting off the cave wall. The cave behind the waterfall was cold and damp, and like Winter, most cats had found an overhanging ledge to sit on. Only GreenClan, Tigerstripe, and Dragonstar remained on the ground.

I followed Frozenpaw through the cave, my heart hammering in my chest. She jumped up on a ledge where her father, Olivefur, was sitting with his tail curled around his forepaws. I wasn't sure if I should have joined them, but I settled myself down next to Frozenpaw anyway.

"This storm is terrible." Came Honeydrop's voice, and a moment later she appeared on the ledge next to me. Olivefur's eyes gleamed with pride when he saw the gold and white cat.

"I know! I hope Thornpaw's okay." Frozenpaw said. I pressed closer to her wet fur, feeling safer when she was beside me.

"I'm sure he's fine." Olivefur said dismissively. "StarClan wouldn't allow their moon cat to die."

"The mooncave is underground." I pointed out. "I our camp flooded, theirs surely did too."

Honeydrop looked worried. "Why didn't StarClan warn me of this?" She muttered, scraping her claws against the stone.

"They warned Winter Skies." Frozenpaw pointed out. Honeydrop shook her head just as a crack of thunder split the sky. I had to stop myself from crying out. I was terrified of storms.

Water had begun to form in the bottom of the cave. It was now deserted, every cat had found somewhere to get out of the water. A flash of lightning lit up the camp, revealing the outline of several cats wading into the camp.

"No!" Came a howl from Dragonstar, spotting the intruders. Both clans erupted into panic as the dark shapes of the intruders suddenly began to launch themselves onto the clan cats. Instantly, every cat was battling, attempting to stay on the small ledges where they had found shelter.

A cat threw itself on me, clinging me to the ground in a heartbeat. Before I could even fight back, razor sharp claws had dug into my ear, tearing it. I yowled in pain, my back claws meeting flesh as I kicked out desperately.

Another pair of claws suddenly dug into my flank. I flinched away, looking up, and came face to face with a huge golden cat. Snakestar! I barely had time to react before the rogue had swiped at me with a massive forepaw, sending me plummeting into the gathering water below.

The rainwater enveloped me instantly. It was shallow enough that I felt the stone scraping into my back. Before I could get my head to the surface, a cat had me pinned down, holding me under the water. I kicked frantically, trying to escape so that I could breath. The cat just laughed, claws raking my sides.

With a furious battle cry, Frozenpaw came flying into the cat, throwing him off of me. I gasped for air as I climbed my way out of the water. Frozenpaw had her teeth in my attacker's throat, sending him screeching to the exit in a heartbeat.

I stared at the ferocious she-cat that had just saved my life. My hero. I thought to myself, seeing the last of the attacking rogues being chased out of the cave.

"Is anyone hurt?" Came Stormstar's voice. The grey leader wound his way through the injured cats, while Winter, Baypaw, and Honeydrop rushed over to a dark clump of fur hanging halfway into the water.

"Darksky!" Gasped Winter Skies, and a moment later Honeydrop let out a cry of distress.

"No! He can't be dead!" The GreenClan medicine cat cried, her feet trembling. My heart ached, seeing the poor cat so upset. I hadn't been very close to Darksky, though it broke my heart to see him dead.

Dragonstar didn't look hurt at all. The MudClan leader stared emotionlessly, then commanded Red Eyes and Eagletail to bury the GreenClan deputy.

"What about sitting vigil?" Winter Skies asked, glaring at his leader.

Dragonstar hissed. "There's no time for that! Our camp is flooded and our warriors are injured. Is any other cat dead?" He asked as Red and Eagletail dragged Darksky's body to the burial cave, a cave that was connected to the camp with a small tunnel.

Suddenly Frozenpaw appeared beside me. "Foxpaw." She whispered. "Little Fox is dying."

"What?" I gasped, turning to see the elder. I noticed Honeydrop crouched over her, trying to persuade her to eat some poppy seeds.

"Little Fox is dead, too." She announced to Dragonstar, the pain of loss clear in her voice.

"So is Bopper!" Olivefur gasped. "Bopper, no!" The black and white cat crouched beside his old friend, whimpering loudly.

"Oh, StarClan!" Redpaw cried. "How could they take so much from us at once?"

I padded over to my sister, nuzzling her fur with my muzzle in an attempt to comfort her. She looked at me gratefully, sighing. "I can't believe all of this is really happening. I want to go home."

I nodded, remembering the dry, warm twoleg nest that Redpaw and I used to live in. Joining the clan had seemed so much better back then. Now we were here, trapped, as the storm continued, flashes of lightning lighting the cave with golden light.
