The Bear and His Crown
The flowers have been disappearing, people come and pull them up by their roots, never allowing them to grow back.
I cant allow this to continue, not only are they destroying our home, but they're taking our families, our friends. Due to this many are leaving, retreating to the mountains. A place humans wouldn't dare to venture carelessly. The cold and the snow will hide them, those who survive.
But I wont leave. if I am to die, I'm going to die in my home. Besides the best way to escape humans, is to do so when they are distracted, a bear attack is a fairly good distraction.
I make my way threw the brush of the wood, the settlement where the humans come from is in this direction. I don't exactly know what I'll do once I'm there, but knowing how humans treat wild animals, odds are it will play itself out. I just have to be what they call me...
A wild animal.
I continue pushing my way threw the thick bracket. Humans don't come this way, they consider it "too much of a hassle". Not that I'm complaining, up ahead is a clearing most of the animals in this territory have been at least once. It's the home of all the flowers in the wood, and definitely one worth seeing.
Peeking my head threw the brush, I attempt to see if there are any animals left. But there is nothing but silence, not even the birds remained. But there is something there, in the centre of the meadow.
Well, perhaps not something, but someone. That someone being, a human child. But this child doesn't smell of a human child, they smell of trees and sap. Not a sent you should be finding in this territory, but aside from that. This child shouldn't be here, this is a sanctuary. One humans are not suppose to enter.
Considering my choices, I rule out anyone that involves harming the child, I may be an animal, but I'm no monster. Will those possibilities out of the way My only other option would be to scare this child, which shouldn't be too hard for a bear that's three time the size of said child. Or most children in general.
If anything this will be the instigator for this whole fiasco. The perfect distraction.
Slowly and silently, I crept behind them, rising to my hind legs I cast a shadow upon the tiny human. But the reaction was unexpected, They didn't run, scream or cry. They looked right up at me and smiled. To say the least, I was incredibly taken aback.
Stumbling backwards, I fall over. Considering how big I am even I'm surprised about how long I was able to keep standing on my hind legs. But the child, I will never be able to tell if this child is the bravest person alive or the stupidest, but there they where right before my face, right as I open my eyes. Their face dusted with child like concern, the type of concern that shows children don't understand what's wrong but know something is wrong.
I roll over on to my side making sure it's the side the child is not on, and lay on my stomach, closing my eyes. I was tired, I want to sleep and forget about all the nonsense, and pain the humans are causing us. I want to go back to liking freely like I use to, not bound by the fear of getting caught, I want the young to know that feeling of being free and not having to fear humans. But that's nothing but a now unrealistic dream.
I could hear the child shuffling along the grass, as if they were searching for something. I don't know how long I had been lying there but in my daze I could feel a small bit of pressure on the top of my head. Startled my eyes snap open to see the same child right in front of my nose, attempting to place something upon my head. I let the child finish and take a step back before I rise to my feet.
Now standing, I make my way over to the small stream that runs through one side of the clearing, if you were to travel a bit further down you would find a watering hole where all the animals use to gather on hot summer days. The child followed closely behind me awaiting my reaction, I don't understand why she thinks she would get one from an animal, no less a predator. Again stupid or brave, I can not tell.
Looking in to the water I gazed at my reflection, what was in in was not what I was expecting. There resting upon my head lied a crow made of flowers. The flowers of the forest. I turned to gaze at the child, and there they stood smiling and giggling, as human children do when they're pleased, I couldn't help but grunt in somewhat of an approval.
The child being even bolder them before steps forward and begins to pat my muzzle, softly as if not to scare or harm me. The child was calm and so was I, I allow myself to relax, focusing on the sound of the trickling water running down the stream. At this point my original plan was long forgot. The comfort of my enemies child was more then I asked for, but it felt like something I craved. Not the approval of the humans nor the safety of his fellow animals. It was the feeling of not being afraid, it was a similar feeling to being by his mothers side, being protected and loved.
Allowed myself to lay down of the grass, my eyes close as the child continued to pet me, maybe this was a trap, maybe I would die because this child was nothing but a set up. But for the time being, I like to believe maybe not all humans are truly evil. Maybe I can give this one a chance.
