Chapter Twenty-Five
~Chase's POV~
"The whole thing was nuts." Vaughn began to tell the whole story as we headed back to base. We climbed over debris in our way and I didn't interrupt Vaughn as he filled Rhys and Fiona in on what hell we've been through.
"After Vallory beat the everliving shit out of me, Cassius was nice enough to take me back to his lab and fix me up. The second time that guy saved my ass. I really owe him. I also wouldn't have been able to fix Chase. When we found her, she was in bad shape. I was afraid she wasn't going to make it." Rhys glanced at me from the corner of his eye after Vaughn finished his sentence.
I smiled and laid a hand on his shoulder. He grabbed my hand and pulled it off of his shoulder. He held my hand and entwined our fingers together like ribbon. Vaughn continued and told how Vallory opened the vault and all hell broke loose.
"I thought both of you were dead," Rhys said. His grip on my hand tightened. I squeezed his hand to reassure him we were alright.
"I got close a few times, but Chase made sure to keep us both safe," Vaughn said and smiled at me.
"She's also the one who found you. A few days ago, she spotted three suspicious characters a few miles away from base. She was able to make out you and Fiona, but not him," he added as he pointed to the strange man with bound hands.
"I thought he would've killed us by now," Rhys said dramatically.
"I've been watching you for days, Rhys. There's no way I would've let him kill you or Fiona," I said as I stared into his eyes.
"Vaughn wanted to come with me, but he had to stay with the rest of the Hyperion refugees," I added. Rhys seemed shocked at my words. He snaps his head towards Vaughn.
"Look, don't take this the wrong way, but... they elected you leader?" I held in my laughter as Vaughn quickly responded.
"Hey, look man. I was just as surprised as you. They wouldn't even let me into the squash games back on Helios." Rhys suddenly had a guilty expression all over his face.
"Oh yeah, sorry about that. It's just they only have so many courts and-"
Vaughn snapped back and cut Rhys off. We soon reached the top of a small peak. Rhys and Fiona gasped at the sight before them.
"We made our base out of what's left of Helios," I informed them.
"Whoa," Rhys gasped in amazement. Vaughn looked over at his best friend with a smirk.
"Cool, right?" We headed down the small peak and were greeted by many former Hyperion workers. They bowed as we walked by.
"Okay?" Fiona raised an eyebrow at the sight of the everyone bowing.
"Wow, they really revere you," Rhys said with a chuckle.
"Not me, you," Vaughn corrected.
"They even have a statue of you," I said and pointed to the statue to our left.
"That's not me, that's Jack."
"They went ahead and labeled it Rhys," Vaughn pointed out. I kept my laughter in check as we passed more ex-Hyperion workers.
"Someone tried to alter the face to look like you, but... um... most of these guys are basically shitty at everything," Vaughn said. Rhys went on about how it was time he finally got respect. I also even told him about how he was considered the 'Great Liberator' who destroyed Helios.
"Alright, let's take advantage of my fame," Rhys said. I glare at him harshly.
"Rhys," I said with a tone full of warning.
"Alright, alright. Just a little bit," he said with a small grin. I groan in annoyance as we finally enter the base.
Vaughn gave Rhys some fruit while Fiona and I escorted our prisoner to the second floor. I overheard Rhys and Vaughn talking about something.
"Wow. My forehead isn't really that big... is it?" Vaughn was showing Rhys a picture someone drew of him.
"Chase, is my forehead that big?" He asked. I leaned out the broken window a little and examined the drawing. I compared it to the real Rhys and began to laugh. Rhys began to freak out when I began to laugh.
"We have a prisoner to interrogate!" Fiona shouts. I flinch at how loud she was. Vaughn and Rhys joined us upstairs after Fiona shouted.
"Fiona, you're bad cop, and I'll be good cop," Rhys said once he was upstairs. Fiona grimaced at him and narrowed her eyes.
"Shut. Your face," she growled.
"Ooooo... already in character. Nice." I mentally slap myself as the interrogation began. Rhys began to yell and Fiona also couldn't hold herself back. Once she asked him who he was, we got an answer.
"A truth seeker."
