Chapter Nineteen
~Chase's POV~
We continued walking until Fiona contacted us again. I also saw Rhys' disguise was falling apart.
"Then we can all be destroyed together! Yay!" I overheard Gortys say. Then, Jack interrupted and ruined the conversation.
"I'll call you back later," Rhys said and hung up.
"How are we going to get in the office now?" I sighed in frustration.
"Man, I thought a Handsome Jack fan like yourself would know I have a secret trap door in my office," Jack laughed at Rhys.
"Why didn't you say that earlier?!" I flip out on Jack.
"Princess, it's not something you just say out of the blue. I mean, come on, I have my secrets too," Jack grinned.
"But you knew we needed a way in!" I snapped back.
"Good point," Jack said.
"We could've used that information way before this point!" Rhys yelled.
"Isn't a trapdoor kinda cliche?" I ask with my arms crossed.
"Are you mocking my culture, Princess?" Jack asked.
"No and stop calling me that!" I yell.
"How do we get to it?" Rhys asked.
"We have to reach the prison block. Someone has to hold a lever so you can climb up. It's not as sexy as it sounds," Jack responded.
"Just contact Fiona and Sasha before I punch him out," I say and put a hand on my head. Rhys contacts Fiona and Sasha and tells them to meet us at the prison block. Jack disappears again.
"I don't have access!" Fiona said.
"I don't know. Just-just get arrested!" Rhys yelled back and hung up.
"Then, let's go," I stated. We were heading to the Prison block and we had to cross through the Hall of Heroes.
"Rhys. Chase. Are you there?" Vaughn's voice came form the earpiece.
"We can hear you, Vaughn," I responded.
"Good. Cassius saved me and now we're...we're eating drakefruit." Then, static interfered and we lost our connection with Vaughn.
"Damn," Rhys muttered. We walked down the stairs and stopped when someone yelled.
"Vasquez!" A voice yelled. Three accountants were standing in front of us and glaring at Rhys. He switched on his voice control.
"Talk or walk, ladies. I don't have time for both." He sauntered up to the group.
"You made me and my boys look like idiots with that ten million you stole. It's going to take years to finish the paper work," the accountant said.
"Better--hop to it." Rhys' voice changer glitched out in the middle of his sentence.
"Sorry, just ate a burrito," he said with his voice cracking.
"We're doomed...." I mutter.
"You don't mess with accountants. We always will outnumber you. Smoke him," The accountant nodded to another one and it looked like she was pulling out something.
"Don't tell me accountants carry guns," I sigh. Instead, she forms a gun with her hand and makes a clicking sound. Rhys looked at his hands and did the same. He made a firing noise and 'shot' the accountant. She faked spouting blood and fell on the floor.
"You've got to be kidding me right now. Is this normal?" I ask.
"For accountants, it is," Rhys answered.
"You know what, I'll sit right here until your done with your gun fight." I sat on the edge of a planter and watched the game unfold. Rhys took a man hostage as more accountants showed up. He used the accountant as a human shield.
"I can't believe grown men and women are doing this," I sigh.
"Bring it on!" Rhys shouted. He flipped a table over and used it as cover. One accountant pretended to throw a grenade.
"Batter up, bitches!" Rhys hit the pretend grenade with a piece of the table. The grenade blew up and took a handful of accountants with it. More kept showing up.
"Rhys, you need to think of something to make this battle over quicker. Pull out a machine gun or-or something!" I yell. Rhys' eyes glowed with an idea.
"Hope you're not allergic to lead!" Rhys slid down the handrail and shot more accountants. Once he reached the bottom, another accountant showed up and was wearing strange glasses.
"He's out of bullets! I've been counting!" He yelled.
"Of course you've been counting...." I pinch the bridge of my nose. Rhys tosses the guns and pulls out an imaginary knife. He flings it and it lands right in the accountant's head.
"How many accountants does Hyperion need?!" I yell when Rhys gets surrounded. I fly over the battle and stand in front of the elevator. Rhys pulls out my earlier suggestion and wins. He blows the top of his fingers as if smoke was rising from them.
"Great job. Now get your gunslinging ass over here!" I yell.
"You gotta admit that was pretty cool!" Rhys yells in excitement. A janitor shook his head in disapproval.
"I'm with you there, buddy," I mutter. We get in the elevator and Rhys shoots one more time. I pinch his arm to stop him.
"Owowowowowowow!!" He yells. I let go and lean on the side of the elevator. We reach the prison block and find Fiona being interrogated by a guard.
"It was bleeding!" Fiona yelled.
"No, you were just seeing things. The light makes it look like it was seeping blood," the guard argued. Rhys was fiddling with his voice control.
"Screw this thing!" He tossed it and mimicked Vasquez's voice.
"Oh! Hi, Rhys! Things are going great!" Gortys cheers.
"Nononono!! Gortys, this is Vasquez," I said.
"Did you just say Rhys?" The guard asked.
"I think she said "release," Rhys said to cover up Gortys' mistake.
"Release?" The guard questioned.
"Yeah, like "Hey, release me." How pathetic," Rhys muttered the last part.
"Right, except what she apparently said was," Oh! Hi release! Things are going great!" The guard mimicked Gortys' voice.
"Yeah...that's weird sentence," Rhys said. I nudged him in the stomach to get him back on topic.
"I'm here to interrogate this Pandoran scum," Rhys said.
"Mr. Vasquez, I'm the one questioning her," the guard said and leaned against the table.
"I'm dismissing you. Go get some lunch or something. I heard the macaroni is good," Rhys said.
"I do love macaroni..." The guard thanked Rhys and left.
"Nice job," Fiona said once the guard was gone. Rhys changed back into his normal self.
"So, what's the plan now?" She asks.
"There's a trapdoor that's located in Jack's office. We can use that to reach the beacon," I informed her.
"And it's somewhere down here," Rhys said. We walked to the back of the prison block and looked up.
"Oh, what wondrous thing we shall have to deal with," I said sarcastically as I stared at the death machine that was blocking our way to Jack's office.
"Why can't we just get a break?" Rhys asked.
"The only time we'll get a break is when this Vault business is over with,"Fiona said. While the two chatted, I saw a lever and pushed it up. Rhys noticed what I did.
"How did you do that?" He asked.
"This lever stops the machine, but once I release it, it goes back down." I let go and show them.
"Fiona, you hold the lever. Gortys, I'm going to need a boost," Rhys said.
"No problem!" Gortys cheered.
"It doesn't hurt to climb on something that's metal," Rhys commented as he got on top of Gortys' head.
"Oh no. It's excruciatingly painful. I'm just being a team player!" Gortys said.
I just hope this works," Fiona stated.
"What? Still don't tru-- are you moving?" Rhys asked Gortys. He legs were shaking.
"Not at all!" She replied. I went to the top and passed through the machine. I waited for Gortys to boost Rhys up. I saw Fiona push the lever up and the machine ceased.
"Now boost Rhys up, Gortys," I yelled slightly so they could hear me.
"Okay!" She launched Rhys up in the air really far. I was right where he stopped. I grabbed his hand and helped him to the ladder. He was muttering something that I couldn't make out.
"Stop talking to yourself and climb," I scolded him.
"Fine. Geez, you sound like a mother," Rhys said.
"Well, you're acting like a child," I fired back. Rhys went silent and received a call from August. He told August we had to change our plans. August just wants us to bring the beacon back.
"Yeah, working on it," Rhys said with a hint of sass and hung up. Finally, we reached the trapdoor.
