many happy returns

Meet me in Music Room 3 at 4:00. Don't be late. -Kyoya

Tamaki glanced down at his phone. It was 3:45, he still had fifteen minutes to kill before meeting Kyoya in Music Room 3... for whatever reason. There were no club activities today and no new plans in the works. He had no idea why he had to stay, especially on his birthday, when he should be allowed to go home.

'It's not like anyone remembers, though,' he thought, a little sadly. 'Not even Kyoya. Though, to be fair, Kyoya never celebrated his own birthday, and neither did his family, so it's probably not a big deal to him.'

But it was for Tamaki. He remembered birthdays spent with his mom in France, going for picnics and looking at different music halls, buying Tamaki his first piano, celebrating just the two of them in their little home.

He smiled a little and looked up at the sky. 'I wonder if Mom remembers all those birthday celebrations,' he thought wistfully.

His phone beeped in his pocket. He pulled it out and slid his finger across the screen to check the message.

It's 4:00... Start making your way over from the hedge maze. See you in two minutes. -Kyoya

Tamaki glanced up sharply. How did Kyoya know where he was? Sometimes, Kyoya's knowledge of everything that happened unnerved even him. It was a little disconcerting.

He looked at one of the hall windows in time to see Kyoya flash a smile at him before disappearing.

"That's cheating!" Tamaki called, laughing.

"No, it isn't. It's called playing to your advantage," Kyoya called back. "Come on!"

Tamaki broke into a run, letting his feet carry him up the familiar route to Music Room 3. When he arrived at the doors, he threw them open, but instead of the usual roses, confetti flew out at him and he heard six familiar voices yell "Surprise!"

Tamaki stared in shock at the room. There was a banner saying 'Happy Birthday, Boss!' with everyone'smessages and signature on it, balloons all over, confetti settling in his hair, and all his friends standing there smiling at him.

"Happy birthday," Kyoya said quietly, stepping up to him.

Tamaki moved his mouth, but no sound came out, like a fish out of water. Kyoya laughed softly.

"You thought I'd forgotten, didn't you?" he said, amused.

"Yeah, I thought everyone had," Tamaki said, shaking his head in disbelief.

Honey jumped on him and hugged him. "Don't be silly, Tama-chan, we could never forget your birthday!"

"Yeah. Happy birthday."

"Yeah, Boss!"

"We'd never forget!"

"Senpai, come on. Have a little faith please."

"Tamaki, honestly. Does it really sound like me to forget?"

Tamaki could only laugh in happy appreciation as his friends gathered around him, the room festive and cheery, and the love in their gesture overwhelming.

"Who planned all this?" he asked wonderingly, and everyone looked at Kyoya.

He shrugged casually. "Guilty as charged," he said as he pushed up his glasses.

Tamaki wrapped him up in a hug and whispered in his ear. "Thanks, I never expected all this. I love you," he said almost inaudibly. Kyoya hugged him back lovingly.

"I'd never forget your birthday, Tamaki. Not yours," he whispered back and stepped away.

"Time for cake!" Honey cheered. Tamaki laughed and Honey dragged him over to a table, where there was, in fact, a cake waiting for them.

Kyoya stood behind Tamaki and whispered in his ear.

"Happy birthday, Tamaki. Oh, and happy anniversary."

Tamaki's eyes widened in surprise. He'd totally forgotten! Kyoya had asked him to be his boyfriend exactly two years ago today. He suddenly felt horrible for forgetting, but Kyoya didn't seem to mind.

"To many more," Kyoya said as he slipped into the seat beside him, eyes sparkling happily.

That, Tamaki decided, was the best birthday present of all.
