Chapter 2
Ethan parked the car and we both got out. The building where the meeting was to be held was the same pack meetings were held in, but we had never had to go to the top floor where there were rooms in which the Alpha met with his pack members when needed.
The building itself was an impressive and admittedly intimidating large structure, painted in a pearl white and looking a bit like it had been transported straight from Ancient Greece with all the tall pillars.
We went through the front door, smiling at the receptionist who was speaking on the phone with someone and waved us through to the elevators even though we had been headed there anyway. Ethan gripped my hand tightly as we made it onto the elevator, the quick ride doing nothing to help the queasy feeling in my stomach.
He held me back as the doors opened by his grip on my hand, leaning in to press a deep kiss to the side of my head. I forced myself to smile at him and he sighed lightly as he pulled away.
"It's going to be just fine, stop worrying Theen." Ethan said.
I tried to be reassured by his words but I knew neither of us could guarantee anything. Perhaps we had made a mistake deciding to get married now, we could have waited a few more years.
I wanted to pull Ethan back but it was too late now, we already had a meeting scheduled and if the Alpha was here before us, then he would have already caught our scent and would know we were here. If he wasn't here yet, then when he arrived he would be able to tell from our lingering scents that we had indeed come and then left before meeting with him, which would probably be seen as disrespect.
We found room 319 near the end of the hall straight down from the elevator. No one seemed to be inside though.
"Should we go in and wait?" I asked, glancing at my watch to see we had arrived ten minutes before we were supposed to. It was only polite though to get there ahead of time so there was no chance of making Alphas wait for you, considering how busy they were.
"Let's just wait here, I don't know if that'll be offensive." Ethan said and I nodded in agreement.
We leaned against the wall in wait, Ethan looking as though he wanted to say something but couldn't considering there were wolves in the building and they had such good hearing, that they would hear everything we said. I was secretly glad he couldn't speak, it gave me the chance to try to get my heartbeat under control.
The elevator doors opened and all my efforts went to waste as I caught sight of Alpha Russel. He was a tall man, taller than Ethan who was 6' by at least a couple inches, and had much more muscle to him. He had broad shoulders and a confident, imposing walk that made him look even bigger, so much so that I was surprised he got out of the elevator doors with ease.
Alpha Russel had caramel coloured hair with just a few streaks of grey in it, aqua coloured eyes and a strong jaw. As a student I had worked part time at a library and the head librarian had arguably been in love with the Alpha, she had practically melted into a puddle with glasses when he had come in with his two children.
He flashed us his white teeth in a smile as he walked towards us. Although logically I knew their fangs only came out when they were switched to their wolf form, his teeth looked to be much sharper than a regular human's to me.
"Alpha Russel." We both greeted simultaneously, bowing our heads down with our necks bared in submission.
"Mr.Kim, Ms.Clarke." The Alpha greeted back allowing us to straighten up out of our uncomfortable bows.
Ethan held the door open and the Alpha went through first. I followed him in, widening my eyes at Ethan as I went through, feeling him follow close behind me.
A large desk was sat with three chairs placed behind it facing the door and two facing the desk in front of it. We took the two chairs as Alpha Russel gestured for us to sit in them, seating himself in the middle chair across from us.
The door opened and my heartrate skyrocketed. Alpha Russel looking like he was suppressing an amused smile having surely heard the spike.
Ethan and I stood again, bowing our heads as another Alpha just as large as Alpha Russel came in. The woman looked to have just as much muscle as Alpha Russel, but was perhaps an inch or two shorter. She had dark skin and her head was shaved clean.
"Alpha Edrei." We greeted politely, the Alpha walked passed us, greeting Alpha Russel before she addressed us.
"Rise." She said shortly, and we looked up to see her looking us over with a passive expression. I dropped into my seat feeling boneless with relief. If the Alpha had smelt that we were mates to any of her pack members, then she would not be looking at us so passively. She probably would be sniffing one of us right now, the other being held back by Alpha Russel.
"Alpha Onyx said he would be late and that we should start without him." Alpha Edrei said as she took a seat next to Alpha Russel.
"We'll get started then. I'm curious, why the early marriage? You two are still young." Alpha Russel asked.
Truly it was because we had wanted to move in together and Ethan's parents were a bit old fashioned so they wanted us to be married first. We were also both romantics a little obsessed with the idea of marriage.
"It's because of my parents, they're old fashioned and want for us to be married if we are going to be living together." Ethan explained, somehow managing to smile when in the presence of two people who looked like they could snap us like twigs.
"It's nice to see children who obey their parents." Alpha Russel said with a smile although his words were biting. Werewolves were always harping on about how us humans don't have enough of a bond with our pack or family, saying that we were unable to love as deeply as they did.
"Where will you be living after marriage?" He asked.
"We're looking for an apartment right now, we've pooled our savings so that we can put a down payment as soon as we find something, Alpha" I said.
"You haven't found anything yet?" Alpha Edrei interjected and we shook our heads.
"Will you continue living within this territory?" The Alpha asked.
"Yeah, we want to stay close to our families." I said.
"If you get approval, when will the wedding be?" Alpha Russel asked.
"We were hoping to have it in the winter, it depends on how long searching for a place takes us." Ethan answered.
"I've always liked wedding ceremonies held during the holiday meeting." Alpha Russel said and I forced a smile at that.
All pack members had to get married before the entire pack at one of the meetings. Werewolves didn't really believe in marriage, for them the mating bond signified commitment, but humans who wished to marry had to hold their wedding where the whole pack could attend. There was about four meetings a year so the couple could choose to be wed at any of those. Ethan and I were planning to have a little ceremony at home first with just our families, and then at the meeting as mandated.
"Alpha Onyx is on his way up." Alpha Russel informed us, folding his hands on the table and looking serenely towards the door as I fought not to fidget as my nerves built up again.
I swallowed nervously as I heard the elevator doors open, Ethan catching my eye and giving me a reassuring smile that I tried to return, wiping my clammy hands on the material of my dress.
The door opened behind us and Ethan and I stood again, turning to face the door and bowing our heads.
"Mine." A deep voice growled and I glanced up in horror, barely getting a glance at glowing red eyes focused intently on me before a force had knocked into me. Big boulder like arms wrapping around my waist as I was hoisted up off my feet and pinned to the wall.
I stared wide eyed at Ethan over the shoulder of the hulking man currently nuzzling his face into my neck, sniffing along my throat.
Ethan made a move to come towards us but the man holding me turned and growled deafeningly at him. A strangled sound escaped me in fear, attracting the Alpha's attention back to me. I couldn't even look at him though as he hushed me, trailing his nose up my neck to the line of my jaw.
It felt like an out of body experience watching Alpha Russel holding Ethan back by his arms as he fought to get to me. Alpha Edrei coming to stand in front of him like a hulking wall. The Alpha pinning me against the wall snarled lowly as he inhaled the scent of my hair, the sound snapping me back to my senses.
I flailed in his arms, fighting to get away. My legs having given out, I slumped to the ground as he suddenly released me. My nails scratched against the wall as I tried to push myself up despite my legs having gone numb as I saw the man prowl towards Ethan.
Alpha Edrei put her hand on his shoulder but he shrugged it off roughly as he went around her. Advancing on Ethan who was fighting with all his might to get away from Russel, trying to look around Edrei to catch sight of me. He was yelling something but I couldn't make out what it was with how loud the sound of my blood rushing through my ears was.
A loud scream resonated as the Alpha pulled back and snapped his fist towards Ethan's face, blood spurting out of his nose. The only thing keeping him up was Alpha Russel's hold on him as his head lolled back.
"Stay away from my mate." I heard the Alpha growl but paid no heed to him as I hurried to Ethan, only managing to grab his face within my hands before I was pulled away again.
The same arms as before wrapped themselves around my waist and I was pulled back against a hard, heaving chest. The grip growing bruising as I fought to get out of the hold while I was dragged away from a now unconscious Ethan, blood having run down his face and colored the pristine white dress shirt he had been wearing a crimson red.
I screamed for the Alpha to let me go as I was dragged down the hall all the way to the elevator, practically tossed in while the Alpha pressed a button along the side. Throwing his arm out to stop me from running out as the doors were closing.
The elevator lurched downwards a moment before he slammed his fist on the emergency stop, turning to look at me. My vision having gone blurry as I cried desperately, I was only able to make out glowing red eyes and tan skin as he advanced on me. Crowding me in until I was pressed up against the furthest corner of the elevator, his body so close to mine my chest touched his with every heaving breath.
I stared past him at the elevator doors, my body trembling in fear.
"Mate." The alpha said in his deep voice.
"P-please let me go to him, he's hurt please." I begged, trying to make a move to go around him but he crowded me further in. Grabbing my jaw within his hand he tilted my face up but I kept my eyes stubbornly on the elevator doors. Knowing it wasn't possible, but hoping the doors would be thrown open showing Ethan had come for me.
"Look at me mate." He said, voice gruff and deep but I ignored him, again trying to weasel out from beneath him to get to the buttons.
"Look at me." He said again, pinning me with his body to the wall to stop my squirming.
"Please just let me c-check on him." I sobbed, my body beginning to cave in on itself with every sob that wracked through me.
"Look at me." He growled loudly making me wince as I finally looked up at him. My tear filled eyes connecting with his that melted to a whiskey color from their terrifying red as his eyes met mine.
"You're my mate. Don't speak of him unless you want me to go back and finish him off." He threatened. I swallowed back the lump in my throat, trying to keep in a whimper of fear.
"Please just let me see him, make sure he's okay." I begged, a werewolf could knock out a human if they hit them, an Alpha werewolf could kill with just one hit.
"If I hear you speak one more word about him, I will kill him." He warned making me shut my mouth, breath catching in my throat.
"He's alive if that's what you're wondering, I could still hear his heart beating."
I was relieved to hear he was alive and slumped against the wall, fighting to wrap my head around what had happened. Dark spots appearing in my vision but I fought them off, hoping I would be able to catch another sight of Ethan when we made it out. If this Alpha ever decided to let me out of this elevator that was. I glanced back up at the Alpha to see him staring down at me.
"Your heart is beating so fast little mate." The Alpha said, pressing his hand gingerly against my chest. I pushed at him weakly, growing still when he growled warningly at that. His whiskey eyes darkening as they fell to where my hands lay between us on his chest. I glanced up at him again from beneath my wet lashes, fearing he would hit me and I wouldn't be able to get even another glance of Ethan.
He stepped back though, hitting the emergency stop button, making me tense up, having been expecting to be hit. His eyes narrowed as he caught the movement.
The elevator doors opened on the first floor and I broke out in a run before the doors had even fully opened. I heard the Alpha yell behind me as I made a break for the stairs. It was foolish, I knew it was as soon as I had stepped foot out of the elevator but all I could think of was getting to Ethan.
I made it to the stairs, pumping my legs as fast as I could, but a hand slammed the door leading to them closed. Without a glance back at the Alpha who I could feel glaring menacingly at me, I ducked under his arm, making a break for the closing elevator doors, just managing to slip through before the doors closed.
I pressed the button for the second floor hurriedly, but before the elevator could move clawed hands were prying the metal doors apart. I watched in horror as the metal bent and wilted under the unrelenting force as the doors were thrown wide open revealing the panting Alpha, his eyes glowing a threatening red.
He grabbed my arm, his claws tearing through the sleeves of my dress and scratching my skin as he yanked me out of the elevator and into his chest. My entire body trembled violently as I felt his chest rumbling with anger.
He swung me up into his arms, one arm under my waist and the other under my knees, the receptionist from before running before him to get the door. Seeing my very last chance I reached out for her as we passed through, my fingers catching in the blouse she was wearing. I gripped it as tightly as I could, knuckles going white.
"Call an ambulance, please." I yelled as the Alpha carried me away from her, my fingers tearing the thin silk of her blouse as I fought to keep my hold on her.
The rumbling in the Alpha's chest only grew at my words and he carried me towards a sleek black car. Supporting me with just one arm as he pulled out his keys and threw open the doors. Tossing me towards the passenger seat where I landed roughly as he sat on the driver's side. Leaning past me to pull close the door I had thrown open, growling loudly in my face making me whimper as I cringed back into the leather seat away from him.
"Stop trying to get away from me, it's not going to fucking happen." He growled into my face, inhaling my scent deeply as he pulled the seatbelt across my trembling form. I struggled to breathe, my heart pounding so hard within my chest it was painful, lungs feeing like they were not getting enough air despite how hard I was panting.
I looked out the window back at the building as he threw the car into reverse, driving off so fast the building became a blur in just seconds as he sped down the street away from it.
"My-my house." I mumbled feeling light headed as he merged on to the highway, the opposite direction from where I lived. My vision danced with black spots, lungs beginning to burn dangerously.
He ignored me as he drove far too fast even for being on the highway, zooming in between cars, travelling so fast I couldn't even make out our surroundings.
"Where are we going?" I asked breathily.
"Back to my territory, to my house." He answered glancing at me from the corner of his eye as he cut in front of another car, my body rocking to the side due to his crazy driving.
"What? No, no let me out." I said.
He ignored me and seemed to pick up speed at my words.
I hung my head low between my knees as I struggled to breathe. Rationally I knew I was having some sort of a panic attack but never having had one before I didn't know what to do to stop it. I raised my trembling hands to my head, clutching my hair between my hands, tugging on it as I tried to think of a way to get away from the Alpha while in a locked car speeding down a highway without getting killed.
My purse still strung across my body, knocked against the door and I realized I could at the very least call Ethan's phone. Hopefully someone around him would pick up and be able to tell me if he was okay.
I fished my phone out of my purse with my shaking hands, quickly calling his phone. I raised it to my ear only for it to be snatched out of my hand.
"Give that back." I yelled as I tried to reach for it.
"Is that him? Is his name Ethan?" The Alpha asked, his grip so strong around my phone that cracks were beginning to form in the glass screen, the screen growing blank as he crushed it in his hand.
I stayed silent but the look on my face must have given it away. He lowered his window and tossed my phone out making me gasp loudly.
"Stop testing me mate. I struggled to keep from killing him when I smelled his scent all over you, and you're making it harder by acting like this." He warned.
"All it would take is one more blow and that dirty piece of shit will be gone forever." The Alpha snarled.
"No please." I begged, panting loudly as my lungs seemed to grow even more constricted, my vision growing so blurry I felt only the adrenalin was keeping me from passing out.
If the Alpha turned back, no one would stop him from killing Ethan. I wasn't near strong enough and the other Alphas would stand by knowing if that had been their mate, they would do the same.
"Then stop trying to get to him. Sit still as I take us home and I won't kill him. Do something stupid and I will rip his head off while you watch."
Tears streamed down my face at his words, and I curled my legs up, hugging them to my chest as I tried to keep from sobbing. Feeling more helpless than I ever had before.
He glanced at me from the corner of his eye, his eyes melting back to their brown as he looked at my trembling form. The car slowed down a bit until I wasn't being jolted around with every lane he changed. He said nothing though and for that small mercy I was thankful.
