Just Listen
I slowly blew out a long breath, as I stood in front of Jax's bedroom door. I could hear some sort of talking on the other side, he must be playing a video game again. I slowly knocked and opened the door. He was sitting in a leather gaming chair, a headpiece on his head, and he was talking fast as his fingers rapidly pushed buttons on the controller in his hand. I walked over slowly
"Jax?" I asked, tapping him on the shoulder. He jumped slightly and took his headpiece off after pausing the game.
"Kinda busy here," he mumbled, motioning towards the screen that had a half naked lady on it. With the word 'RESUME' across her torso. I rolled my eyes
"I really need to talk to you," I started, but he rolled his eyes
"Can't it wait until-"
"It's important!" I snapped, surprising myself. Jax slowly turned towards me again, his face scrunched up in confusion.
"Alright, alright. What?" he asked. I slowly walked over and sat on the edge of his bed. I patted the spot next to me, he sighed and shuffled over and sat down next to me. I looked at him
"What I'm about to tell you is either going to make you incredibly pissed at me, or earn the silent treatment. But please, just listen. Okay?" I asked cautiously. Jax's eyes narrowed slowly but he didn't object. So I continued
"So, a few days ago, after the whole 'date' picture of Duncan and I at that Crab Shack wen't viral, I agreed to talk to him-"
"What!?" Jax snapped. He glared at me, I swallowed hard. He looked so much like Dad when he did that
"Just listen! We decided we needed to talk about a few things. So we met up at St. John's park, and we began talking about everything. From the cheating scandal, to our lives after the show. And we both came to the conclusion that-"
"Do not tell me you forgave him," Jax growled, through clenched teeth.
"No. I don't think I could ever really forgive him for what he did to me. But he showed me that I wasn't completely innocent in the whole ordeal. I was controlling, and had a my-way-or-the-highway-attitude that really wasn't attractive. I went to that park with the intention of telling him off. Telling him that I never wanted to see him again. But once I got there, and I saw him, all those feelings of hate washed away. Because I still love him Jax. And it may be the stupidest thing I've ever done, but he and I decided we could work things out. So we did, we are," I said. Jax gave me a blank look. I sighed
"We're working on things," I tried. He raised a brow. I growled
"We're dating again!" I snapped. Hoping he'd understand now.
"Ohhh," he said. I face-palmed.
"But he hurt you," Jax said. I slowly looked into his eyes. And placed a hand on his knee
"But I hurt him too. I tried to change him. Whether it was for his own good or not, I stepped over the line. And that was wrong of me."
"But you didn't kiss his best friend behind his back!" Jax snapped. Standing up, he gave me an 'are you fucking insane' look
"Jax-" I pleaded, but he wasn't having it.
"No, Courtney! I don't want him to hurt you again. I don't want to see you come home every day from school with tear stains on your cheeks again. I don't want to hear you crying every night at 3am because of him again! I don't want you to blame yourself for his own stupidity. He nearly ruined you Courtney! Do you have any idea what it's like watching the one person you look up to the most slowly killing herself with grief?!" Jax yelled, his voice faltering. His lip began to tremble. I opened my mouth to speak, but I realized I didn't know what to say. For once. And closed it again.
"Jax-" I choked out. "Please, listen to me,"
"No. I'm done listening. And I'm done trying. Because God knows you wont listen to me," he hissed.
"Get out." Jax said, nodding at the door. I slowly stood up, feeling completely numb. I stumbled towards the door, tearing dripping down my cheeks. I slowly twisted the knob and opened the door. But before leaving I slowly looked back at him
"I'm sorry," I choked out. And slowly left, closing the door behind me. I slowly walked down the hallway. Ready to close myself into my room and never leave
"So you and Duncan are back together," Aunt Cassie's soft voice came from down the hall. I slowly turned towards her
"Look, I'm really not in the mood for another lecture," I said tiredly. She smiled slowly
"Come here," she said, and slowly opened her arms for me. I felt my lip tremble and I quickly fell into her warm arms. I sobbed into her chest, as she soothed down my hair
"Sweetheart, there are a million things I could say to you. But something tells me you just need a warm hug, and silence." she whispered into my hair. I nodded weakly as I sobbed.
So we stood there, in each other's arms. Me crying my eyes out, and her holding me. The entire time.
