Goodbye
I waved to Amy who passed the security gates with her mom as they headed for their flight.
I looked over to Tyler who had a solemn look on his face as he peered over to the spot where Amy had disappeared to. I also didn't miss his glassy eyes, but I decided not to comment on them.
"Shall we?" He asked clearing his voice. I nodded, following him.
Tyler and I had dropped Amy and her mom to the airport seeing as there would be no point if they drive their car here as we would be there too.
"Don't be sad, she's only going to be gone for two months."
"Yeah, the whole summer," he deadpanned, getting into the car. I stayed quite as I got in the passenger side, not knowing how to console him. "But I guess face time and messaging will have to do." He replied.
"That's the spirit!" I said a little too cheerfully. He grunted, turning on the truck.
"Okay," I trailed off. Instead of doing the talking, I turned on the radio that would drown out the silence. This was going to be a long ride home.
"You hungry?" He asked as he turned into a gas station that had Tim Hortons. I sighed in relief. I really needed to empty out my bladder.
"Yeah," I nodded. "What do you want?" He told me his order, reaching into his back pocket for money. "It's okay, I got it." He smiled as a thanks and I quickly ran out, waddling my way to the washroom. I heard him chuckle.
After finally relieving myself, I picked up some wedges, a donut and two coffees to go. "Thanks," he smiled again.
"Anytime." I said a mouthful of fries. He grimaced.
"You really should be more graceful and ladylike." He joked.
"Why?" My voice was muffled from the potato goodness in my mouth.
"Because maybe Dylan will actually notice you," he teased again.
My mouth dropped. "Who the hell told you? Amy?!" I'm going to kill that women. "Also, why the fuck do I have to be ladylike for a guy to like me?" I questioned.
He grimaced, yet again at my foul language. "I was only kidding!" He held up one hand in surrender, the other on the steering wheel. "You really think Amy is anywhere near ladylike?" He snorted. "She's a freakin' cave woman," he finished with a smirk, and I really didn't want to know what was going on inside his dirty mind.
"Who told you?" I gritted out.
He laughed. "No one. Amy said Dylan walked you home the other night, and then I put two and two together. Besides you only confirmed my suspicions," he said with a smug look that I wanted to wipe off his face.
"Well then," I crossed my arms across my chest.
"I'm only kidding, if he doesn't like you for who you are, then he doesn't deserve you."
"Yeah, but he clearly doesn't like me, and I've liked him for like what?" I asked rhetorically. "More than a year?"
"If he can't see how much of a beautiful person you are, your great personality, admire and appreciate many of the talents you have, then he clearly doesn't deserve you." My heart warmed at that. "His loss."
"Thank you, Tyler." I paused. "I'm really glad Amy has you. She really is lucky." He didn't reply, but gave a hum, showing gratitude. He really is humble.
"It's actually me who is lucky to have her, if I'm being remotely honest. She's fucking confident, smart, drop dead gorgeous, not to mention she has the ability to actually tolerate me." I couldn't help but aw at that out loud. He gave me a look.
"Damn," he muttered. "It's going to be two long months."
"I'm sure it won't be that long, besides, you have me," I winked, giving him a nudge. "I'm sure between the Notebook and some karaoke, Shane and I will keep you busy."
He scoffed. "Only Shane can watch The Notebook hundreds of times, and still manage to get emotional." I laughed along with him.
The rest of the ride was spent with the radio, occasionally belting out the lyrics but immediately stopping when he threatened to change the channel.
He drove up to my driveway, turning the car off.
As I made my way up to my room, I quickly stopped turning to face Tyler who was about to enter Shane's. He raised an eyebrow. "Can you please not tell anyone about Dylan?" I pled, emphasizing anyone.
"Anyone? "His eyes darted to Shane's door. I nodded. He returned the nod, promising my secret would be kept.
I collapsed onto my bed, sighing. It had already been a long today, and yet the day wasn't even half over. Not to mention I had work in less than three hours.
Walking out of my room down to the living room where Shane and Tyler had occupied themselves with the play station.
"Shane?" He gave me a hum as a response, not looking away from the screen. "I'm taking the car to work."
"Yeah that's fine, we're staying in tonight anyways."
"Alright." I twirled the keys on my fingers as I headed for the front door.
Suddenly, Julian stormed inside the house, quickly walking up the stairs. He slammed his bedroom door so hard, the walls practically shook.
Usually, Julian was the level headed one in the family. His temper was, surprisingly always in check, seeing how he had Enzo as a twin. He never raised his voice, and he never slammed doors.
Shane came out of the living room with concern written all over his face. "Enzo?" I shook my head. He raised his eyebrows.
"Julian," I whispered.
Enzo entered the house in pants, resting his hands on his knees. His tanned face was tinged red as he tried to take in more breaths.
"Enzo, what happened?"
He shook his head violently as if he was trying to shake something out. "I can't believe that bitch," he muttered.
"Enzo," Shane pestered, hoping to get something out of him.
"Emma." He breathed out. "She cheated on him," he gritted out.
"Oh my God," I whispered. Immediately my heart broke for Julian.
He was always the one with a frown on his face, only a smile coming out every so often, but I knew she would permanently engrave a smile on him that only seemed to leave when she did.
He always seemed so happy with her, and I knew for a fact he had planned out their whole future together. Marriage, house, kids. Julian was always the one who loved to have a ten-year plan, and he made sure Emma fit into every plan.
Their fourth-year anniversary was coming up, so Julian had planned this whole getaway for the weekend. He was supposed to surprise her this morning, but I'm guessing that's when he found out.
"When he called me, he was a mess. I couldn't understand anything besides the fact he told me to meet him at the lake. When I got there, he was scarily quiet." He panted. "It scared me, to be honest. It was completely the opposite of what he sounded like on the phone."
I looked over to Shane who was listening intently to Enzo.
"Then he explained everything to me. In a calm and quiet manner. Then out of no where, he broke down. His body shook so much..." he trailed off. "And then he took off, running all the way here."
"You sprinted four blocks?" He nodded.
"The car is still parked at the lake."
"I'll get it," Shane volunteers, walking back to the living room to get Tyler.
They walk out and with the look on Tyler's face, he knows what's going on. He nods to Enzo, giving him one a 'bro handshake'. He gave us a small wave before him and his dirty blond hair disappeared through the door.
Shane clapped his hands towards me, for keys and I tossed them, watching him leave as well.
I turned to Enzo who now sat on the stairs with his head between his knees.
I sat beside him putting my head on his shoulder. "What do you want me to do?"
From experience, I knew your own twin was the best comfort anyone could ever offer, but I still wanted to help.
"Honestly, I don't even know. He spent more than five years with the person. I'm pretty sure he loved her more than he loved me," he laughed humourlessly. "And want to know what's worse? She had been cheating on him for a year. Julian was too blind in love to notice," he sighed. "She said yes. She fucking said yes when she knew her heart wasn't still with him," he said clenching his hand.
My heart broke for my older brother. "What can I do?" I repeated.
"I don't think he has eaten yet. They were supposed to have lunch at noon at the restaurant he reserved at. And he rushed out before he got the chance to eat something for breakfast." My jaw dropped. It was already five in the evening.
"I'll go make something right now," I nodded.
"I'm going to see how he's doing then cancel the bookings of the hotel."
I ran to the kitchen, trying to look for something that would take little time to prepare. I rummaged through the fridge, feeling accomplished as a found left over chicken from last night's dinner.
I started to heat up the chicken, adding a few more desired spices, finally adding BBQ sauce. I was about to pop a piece of chicken in my mouth before I stopped, remembering. I sandwiched the mixture between two bread slices with lettuce, and a few more vegetables, repeating the process for another sandwich. Pouring Julian's favourite drink, orange juice into a tall glass, I finished off the small meal with cut up fruits and a bowl of bean salad.
Placing everything on a tray, I made it up to the twin's room. I knocked quietly, and I heard a voice telling me it was okay to come in.
I opened the door to see Enzo's back turned towards me, while Julian was sitting on the bed with dry tear stains on his cheeks. His eyes were bloodshot red from the crying he'd been doing.
"I come bearing food." I say, raising the tray a little with a small smile on my face. He gives me a slight smile, and I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been so close.
"Come on, you have to eat," Enzo reached over to the bowl of fruit. He punctured the fork in the fruit and brought it to Julian's lips.
It may look weird, a full-grown man feeding another, but to Enzo and Julian, it was normal. Hell, it would be considered normal to anyone with a connection as deep as theirs. Like Shane and I, Enzo and Julian were there for each other before birth. Through every little thing, weather it'd be any secret, hell, even my period, I went to Shane first, not Mariana or my mom, but Shane.
Julian finally gave in, accepting the bite from Enzo, but then taking the bowl after from him to feed himself. He scooched over, making space for me.
"She would sometimes have small bruises on her neck claiming that the she burnt her self from the curler or would constantly be texting and turning the phone away from me, so I couldn't see it." He said breaking the silence, his voice cracking at the last sentence. "The signs were clearly there, but I always brushed it off, not wanting to believe it."
He was interrupted by Enzo nudging him, motioning to take a bite. Reluctantly, he did so. At the same time, Shane joined, sliding Enzo his keys, sitting beside him. "Then today, I was supposed to take her out for the weekend, for our anniversary," he whispered. "I l-let myself into her apartment and I found her. I found her naked on top of some- some guy." He closed his eyes shut, stopping a tear from coming out. "I wanted to fucking kill the guy," he gritted out. "The worst part was that she hadn't even stopped. She continued until she had finished. At that point, I couldn't even look a her. I grabbed the only thing that belonged to me in that apartment," he reached into his pocket tossing something to Enzo. "I grabbed the ring and left. She wasn't worth wasting my breath and time on anymore."
"I'm sorry," I breathed out, taking the empty bowl and replacing it with a sandwich.
"It's not your fault," he replied, the sandwich still in it's plate.
"If it counts, I never liked her," Enzo pitched in which earned a death stare from me. "Sorry," he muttered.
Julian sighed, moving around on the bed. "I'm going to take a shower, and when I get back, I'd like to be alone for a while," he said, mainly directing his order at Enzo.
"Deal," he replied, laying down on the bed. Julian looked unsure, and I did too. That was too easy. Then he opened his snarky mouth. "Only if you finish everything on that tray," he gestured to the nightstand where the tray lay. Julian let out a grunt, reaching for the tray.
"Come on sis, I'll give you a ride to work," Shane offered. I hopped off the bed, giving Julian a huge hug.
"I'm here if you need me," I whispered into his ear. Julian and my other siblings had been there through the toughest part of my life, and I had to make sure I would be there for him as well.
--
"Amelia!" I heard a voice call out for me as soon as I entered the cafe. I turned to find a beaming Hunter waving his arm wildly to gain my attention.
I chuckled walking over to his table. "Hey," I smiled.
"What are you doing here?"
"I work here," I replied, looking around the table but was found disappointed as there was only Tia and Clyde at the table.
"He's at work," Tia spoke, her eyes shining. Even without saying his name, I knew who she was talking about.
"I'm going to go head in now, would you guys like anything?" I asked as I scanned their plates. It seemed as they had just gotten here since their bowls of ice cream and plates of baked goods have been nearly touched.
"No, we're good, thanks." She smiled. I nodded, walking away from the table with a wave.
Since Amber hadn't been scheduled for tonight, it was only the three of us. I worked in the back, cleaning the workplace and restocking the coffee cups and lids, occasionally serving costumers.
"Hun, would you be able to work with me over night on Monday?" Addie asked as I finished displaying the goods on the glass shelves. "We have to cater for a big business meeting, and I could use all the help I can get."
"Yeah, for sure, I'll just have to ask my mom first," I chuckle.
"Sounds good," she said laughing. "Oh, looks like you have someone waiting for you."
I turn around to find Tia waiting at the counter, an enthusiastic Hunter beside her, and an unamused Clyde.
"What's up?"
"We're going bowling tonight, and I was wondering if you'd like to join us?" She asked.
"I was wondering too, just so you know." I shook my head laughing at Hunter.
"I'd love to, but I have to close today." I said frowning.
"That's perfect! We're going at nine thirty." I smiled. I really was looking forward to hanging out with them again. She bent over the counter, getting real close to me. "Dylan will pick you up from here," she whispered, winking. My cheeks flushed a deep red.
I couldn't manage to form words as she stared at me with a grin, then left the cafe.
Taking a deep breath in, I managed to calm down, smiling when another costumer walked in.
--
I rushed into the bathroom after cleaning up the cafe. Addison and Nick had just left, after I reassured them I wouldn't stay here alone for long.
Addie had merely winked in my direction before intertwining her arm with Nick's.
I stared into the mirror analyzing my dark chocolate eyes, like my dark hair which was perched upon my head. I had no freckles, dimples or anything out of the ordinary. I fixed my hair into a quick side braid, sighing in relief when I shook out my arms.
Yeah, that classified as a workout.
I smiled big in the mirror making sure there wasn't anything in my braces. That would've been embarrassing.
I pulled out my phone, quickly texting Shane. Immediately, he called me.
"What's up?" I asked casually.
"You're not coming home?"
"I'm going bowling with a couple of friends from school," I said not bothering to create a lie.
"So I don't need to pick you up?"
"Nope! You might have to pick me up, but I'll text you. Also, can you tell mama?"
"Alright," he sighed. "Promise me you'll be safe, and don't forget curfew is at eleven."
"I will, and I won't." I chuckled, ending the call and sliding my phone into my back pocket. I heard the door chime, and I couldn't help but smile. After taking one last look in the mirror, I headed out.
There he was, in a fitted navy-blue shirt that did wonders for his arms, and a pair of dark jeans.
Hot fucking damn.
"Hi," he grinned, revealing his bright whites. My eyes wandered his face, taking note of the freckles plastered across his face, mainly concentrated at his nose, then travelling to his eyes, noticing they weren't hiding behind glasses.
"Hello." I felt his eyes darting all over my face before finally resting on my eyes.
"Ready for bowling?" He smirked.
"I could ask you the same thing," I smirked back. "Better yet," I paused as we walked out of the cafe. "Are you ready to lose?"
I heard him scoff, as I turned around to lock the door. I felt his warm breath on my neck, making me squirm. "Oh Lia, I happen to be amazing at bowling."
I paused for a moment, the key hanging in the lock. "Yeah, we'll see about that," I breathed out, locking the door, turning around to face him. I let out a little yelp as I hadn't been expected to be practically pressed against the front door since he was close to me, though there was enough space that allowed me to breathe. I felt my breath hitch. His chest heaved in and out slightly, opening and closing the space between us. I tilted my head up slightly, which allowed me to stare right at his pink luscious lips.
They curled into a small smile. I looked up at him, his icy eyes flicking down to my lips then landing back on my eyes. My breathing picked up, my head beginning to get foggy.
"We should get going," he finally spoke, backing away slightly. I found myself disappointed, yet at the same time I was relieved. I shook it off.
"Yeah let's go," I said into the quiet night. A look passed over his face but disappeared as quickly as it came.
We soon came to a stop in front of the bowling place. This was the same alley that my family used to come to. This place brought back so many memories, more good than bad, but I couldn't help but frown.
"Something wrong?" I shook my head.
"I just used to come here a lot. It's been a while since I've been here."
Dylan smiled, reaching for my hand. I quickly jerked it away, not prepared for the sudden contact.
I gasped. "I'm sorr-- I didn't m-"
He interrupted me. "It's okay." I looked up at him, and I was taken back when he had a friendly smile on his face. "Let's go then?" I nodded, a grin slowly forming on my face as I followed him inside.
